“Wedding and Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

We travelled to Veranda Palmer beach hotel in August to get married and then continue for two weeks thereafter for a honeymoon. The wedding organiser Melissa was absolutely excellent, she made the day perfect and we couldn’t have asked for more. The photos are fantastic and it was a day we will never forget. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and made the trip very enjoyable, we would defiantly return. Thank you for the great holiday!

Room Tip: There are many rooms try to get one with a sea view as they have balconies.

We arrived after our a long journey to a refreshing drink and an introduction to the hotel.
Our room was comfortable and cleaned daily. We did have an issue with towels in the first few days but this was quickly resolved. We stayed in room 300 on the ground floor which was a very good location in terms of the bar and restaurant but it was noisy, the entertainment was booming and you could hear guests in the pool room opposite and the restaurant late at night when you were trying to sleep. We did find it a bit strange having paid for an all inclusive package that water (or any other drinks) in our mini bar were not included free of charge. You can get drinks from the bar as long as its between 11am to 11pm otherwise you get charged for them. You also get charged for tea and coffee in your room. The other concerning issue was that our safe was not bolted down and quite often the maids left our patio door open after cleaning, we didn't feel that it was very safe. We also didn't have any hot water for two days, but this was quickly fixed once reported.
The staff throughout the resort were very friendly, especially David in reception and the girls in the Regatta restaurant. The hotel beach was nice and the pool area was good too. The food we felt was not very good, there didn't seem to be much variety and it was never very hot.
You can book trips via Raj on the beach but we hired a car out for the week and explored the whole island and visited a lot of places for a fraction of the price. We loved meeting the lion cubs at the Casela Safari Park and meeting all the animals on the safari trip. We also had a great experience at the Tamarin 7 Waterfalls but you will need a guide to help you climb down as it is too treacherous to do it by yourself!
We didn't feel our holiday ended on the best note though, the hotel locked our mini bar fridge as we were leaving early the next morning so we couldn't store our water overnight and then they tried to charge us for a bottle of water and drinks from the pool bar that we didn't drink!
Overall it was a good holiday and the hotel is a good base for exploring or if you don't wish to explore you can spend time relaxing in the resort.

Room Tip: I would suggest getting a room on the beach side if you like peace and quiet

We are already in 4 years 9 times in this hotel - before renovation and after renovation - and we have never problems there. We can not understand that some people has here problems like TravelbyLight.
The beach is very nice. The sand is white like a paradise. It is enough place for all and they have many sunbeds. If you want you can walk by feet on the beach 15 minutes to Belle Mare.
The boys from the boatshouse help everybody (z.B.: waterskiing...). Also you get every day a new towel for the beach or for the pool.
The animation team makes a good job by the entertainmant. (Watergym in the morning, Boccia, Volleyball, Football.... and in the evening it is Karaoke, Africashow, Indianshow, Live Music....)
The cleaning personal clean every day early in the morning the pool, that it is not dirty.
The rooms were before they start the renovation very nice and now they are also very beautiful. Every day they make on the bed animals with the towels. And it is normal when the hotel its full, that some rooms are earlier finish with cleaning and some later. But when we are 3 weeks here maybe they come 1 time later but the other days it is earlier finish. When you need a towel earlier then you can go the friendly reception and they give you some towels.
All the personal inclusive the management in the hotel are very friendly and helpful. When you need something they come and help you. We were already in so many countries but we never before we saw this nice service. Since 4 years we come only in this hotel and fly not to another place. It is our second home forever and ever. And till we die, we will come every time in this wonderful hotel.
The new kitchen is like 6 stars - we eat not all because we do not like seafood, no fish, no lamb and much more, but we find every time something to eat and if you find nothing, you can order by the friendly kitchen personal and also by the friendly Chef your favourite eating and you get what you like. The eating is very good.
The hotel has WLAN and also 1 PC with free internet.
It was, it is and it will be in future the best hotel!!!
Many greetings from Vienna Sandra, Gaby and Patrick.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very beautiful.

Good if all you want to do is binge on alcohol and party. Disappointing from a service perspective - rooms cleaned only after 15h00; new towels delivered only at 16h00; left a note for being charged for coffee consumption, even though not consumed after day of arrival (and only ONE was consumed ON DAY OF ARRIVAL, not 2 as was being charged for 3 days after arrival); the entire pool-area, main restaurant and hotel-room is engulfed in pounding nightclub-like music until way past 11pm every night, beginning at approximately 11am (which is sometimes accompanied by some local shows / dances around 9pm - which were good - but if you're a non-smoker, sitting around engulfed in second-hand cigarette-smoke isn't the greatest of atmospheres); the quality of food is terrible, with hardly any local representation of authentic Mauritian cuisine (walking to the town of Belle Mare just a very short distance away, one can buy the most delicious roti rolls with either veg or non-veg fillings, at a minimal cost of between 10-25 rupees); day before check-out, received a proforma bill, indicating "room charges" to a total of approximately 500 rupees on each room - sorted out & cancelled only upon having to query; was brought a soda during dinner-time, with a dead cockroach pasted on the glass; on a different night during dinner, there was a huge cockroach (alive) on the restaurant floor next to our feet during our entire meal (upon pointing this out, was told that "it is a tropical country & that we can change our seats if i am frightened" & the cockroach was just left there... It's not a matter of being 'frightened', but a MERE matter of HYGIENE; i also do not dispute the fact that it is a tropical country & therefore had no issue with the multitude of ants & other insects walking on the tables, etc while eating - but cockroaches pose health issues in a restaurant-environment specifically)... Overall, a poor hotel experience, with best times being spent having explored locally on our own... One can also walk to the local village of Palmar if one turns left after exiting the hotel - this provides an authentic reflection of Mauritian life... Also note that toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner & lotion is not provided (ONE small hotel-soap was provided for the duration of our 7 night stay there; & liquid shower-gel in the dispenser, which was not replenished upon it being finished). the staff were all friendly even if service & sincere professionalism were not up to standard. Palmar Veranda is great for those whose main aim is to eat & drink all they can & party..

Dear guest,

Thank you to have chosen Veranda Palmar Beach for your holidays. We appreciate your feedback and would like to clarify a few points:

Our guests come to relax and have fun and those looking for tranquillity, have never been disturbed by the daily activities happening on the hotel's premises.
The bar is open from 11 a.m – 11 p.m to meet our guests' demands and needs.
The pool area is a public entertainment location where we have an established evening entertainment programme for all age groups, on a daily basis.

Daytime entertainment and activities do not include music shows but a daily sport and activities programme such as Aquagym and Zumba which do require some music. Aquagym is performed three times a week at 11.30 a.m and Zumba sessions once a week at 3 p.m. To this day we have never received guests complaints regarding the music played around the swimming pool area during the day.

Regarding the smoking issue, non-smoking signs are placed in specific areas, however it happens that some guests fail to comply the smoking rules and regulations implemented by the hotel.

We understand your disappointment on the quality of food, we have a daily themed buffet, and this includes a Mauritian buffet every Saturday. Hence, on Saturday 07.09.13, a Mauritian dinner consisting of 'roti' and local dishes was served.

Room cleaning
We would like to point out that all rooms are cleaned blockwise daily, on a rotation system to avoid late cleaning. Indeed, on your second day, the room was cleaned at 3 p.m and you hereafter requested to have it cleaned earlier every day. Needful was done by our room maid Indirah and cleaning was done between 10 a.m – 11 a.m until departure.

Tea and coffee is free on the first day of arrival and on supplement upon consumption for the remaining of the stay

We provide soap and multi-purpose shampoo in all rooms. Once a guest uses the soap, it is instantly replaced by a new one. Liquid shower gel in the dispenser is replenished systematically everyday during the room cleaning .

In regards to the insect complaint (ants, cockroaches etc.) it happened as a result of a fogging exercise for the new thatch roof, which was executed two days before your arrival in the restaurant. As you know, the hotel has recently been renovated. Consequently, a few insects came out of the thatch roof. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused and we would like to reassure you that this was a one-off exercise and does not normally happens.

We hope that we have responded to your feedback.

Best regards

From the moment we arrived at Veranda Palmar Beach Hotel we felt at home! All the staff were friendly and helpful. They have just renovated the hotel and we were truly impressed with everything! Clean comfortable rooms, tasty food, service, beach, entertainment - overall everything was just wonderful! We will certainly return .... can't wait! Our daughter Sarah-Jane was so happy when Clifford took her to join the Sega Dancers. She also looked forward to see what the cleaning lady did everyday with the towels. We also had wonderful weather from 15 - 22 August 2013.
One word of advice to other tourists - AND THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HOTEL - We booked a day trip to L' Ile Aux Cerfs with Raj on the hotel beach, and he gave a price for the day trip and said it includes all drinks and beach barbecue. Needless to say we did not take any money with us as we thought we would not need any cash! We went by boat and were dropped off at Ile Aux Cerfs where the Skipper said we can spend 3 hours and then he will pick us up again and we will then go to another spot to have the barbecue. We were 3 couples (didn't know one another) from the same hotel, and none of us had any cash! They also thought that they would not need cash. So we sat 3 hours in the heat without a drop to drink! When we thought we would lie on the beach loungers, a guy came to us and said it is Rs350 to rent a lounger for the day! So please, learn through our mistake and take cash as you will need it if you don't want to sit high and dry like we did! They also have some stalls where you can buy souvenirs etc.

Room Tip: We were in room 505 which is a stone throw from the beach.

we read the reviews on this hotel before booking and most were spot on, as is normal you will always get people who will complain about anything, but thankfully they are few and far between. As the reviews said, we had to wait a short while for our rooms but as we were a party of 11, a 30 minute wait in the bar around the pool was no issue for us. The rooms were all spotless and had everything you needed including hairdryers. The rooms were cleaned every day and fresh towels brought in every day also. nearly all rooms had a sea view and some both sea and pool view. The food in the restaurant was very good no matter what time you ate and if you fancied something different, just ask and the chef would do it for you as long as he had notice. We travelled with 2 young children in our party and a few times they ate at 5pm and chef made them pizza and chips . we also arrived back from a fishing trip at 7pm one evening and gave chef 3 Trumpet Barracuda , a quick shower, and by 8pm he had them on our table cooked and garnished and we then shared them with the other guests . A lot of the food is curry based but also lots of fish, steak , pasta and great salads. The staff in hotels can be the difference between enjoying our holiday or not, the staff here , with not one exception are fantastic. They always have smile and kind word for you and will help you in anyway they can, I would mention them all by name but there are to many of them, and they are all a credit to the hotel.
The hotel is set on a long stretch of white sand, we walked as far as the eye can see, both directions, and our beach had the best part right in front of the sun beds. we would go to the beach after breakfast around 9.30am and could choose any bed we wanted. we booked a few trips through Raj on the beach and the isle aux cerf and bbq is a must. Raj charged us 2000rps, around £45 for a mini bus to go to the races and visit family, but the price was for all day regardless where we went. you will need to haggle your prices for the trips but Raj in our opinion is very reliable. we thought before we went that the bar closing at 11pm maybe a little early for us, but it wasn't . Nearly everything was part of the all inc package and the only extra we paid for was a few massage from the girls above reception. over all... a lovely hotel. great staff, great food, and will we be back, oh yes.
