From reading some of the reviews i'm amazed that we went to the same island! We had two weeks at this lovely resort, with excellant weather despite this time of year sometimes being unpredictable.
The flight with First Choice, was far better than a previous trip to the Maldives with Monarch. Despite being taken ill on the plane, the cabin crew were fantastic, and Zita the rep was great at the other end -contacting us several times to see if we needed any further help.
Welcome talk didn't tell us much we didn't already know, but the man spoke good English, and we requested two extra pillows which had arrived by the time we returned back from the evening meal.
We stayed in a water villa for the two weeks, which having seen the other rooms was well worth the extra expense. Obviously you don't go to spend time in your room, but many of the other rooms didn't link directly onto the beach as is the case at Velavaru and some other islands. We didn't find it noisy at night - infact the sound of the water was quite relaxing. Large bathroom, with lovely sea view from the bath tub, and two air conditioning units which worked well. We had a fantastic room boy, who also spoke good English, and made a real effort, cleaning the villa thoroughly every morning - we made an effort to talk to him and be polite & friendly, and we were left beautiful flower displays on our bed on several ocassions.
From the watervillas you can sometimes see dolphins at about 6pm. We also saw massive rays & squid at night. During the day by the steps to the watervilla we saw a 5ft shark swimming too. It gets very hot in the middle of the day, and having the water villa provided good amounts of both shade and sun on the balcony. You also get two wooden sun loungers with cushions to lie on. There were lots of people trying to upgrade to watervillas but these were pretty booked up & charged at an additional $90 per night.
The house reef is good, lots to see and explore.
Meals - You'd have to be really fussy to not find something to like! I'm vegetarian and didn't have any problems. Breakfast - a selection of fresh fruit, juice, different breads, pancakes/waffles/french toast on a rotating basis, plus an egg station with good omlettes, and a hot food section, plus continental meat/cheese etc. Lunch & dinner both had good salad bars, with 3 different mixed salads, plus the usual salad foods, a grill bar which had mainly meat options, pasta with fresh sauces, a section with curries - one of which was always vegetarian, and a wide range of other dishes to try. Puddings included fresh fruit as an option each day, plus mousse style desserts. We had a very attentive waiter (Abdulla) - we noticed some of the other guests being quite rude and abrupt with their waiters - so perhaps this is why some we left disappointed with their service! We got on really well with ours, who made an effort to talk to us and recommend parts of the island for spotting different bits of sea life.
There were a range of trips available, but we weren't too interested in these having done similar ones at Velavaru, although in our opinion these were over-priced for the feedback we heard. We did go on the sunset fishing trip, which moved to 3 separate sites for the fishing - hardly anyone caught anything.
The spa is great - the ladies are very professional and respectful. You can book 5 hours of treatments for $300, or 10 hours for $500, or just individual treatments - we went for the 10 hour package which saved quite a bit of money, and had some excellant treatments including collagen facials, balinese massage, aromatherapy massage, aromatherapy facial, stress free back massage, and body scrubs for example.
Everyone on the island from the gardeners, waiters, reception staff and spa ladies were very polite and friendly - going out of their way to say hello as you walk through the island.
This is the ideal place to go if you want to get away from it all - who on Earth goes to such a beautiful part of the world expecting TVs, internet access and so on?! I don't really think it's a good place to take children, more of an adult destination in my opinion. There's no pool - but with the beautiful indian ocean on your doorstep, I can't imagine anything worse then being in a chlorinated swimming pool! The evening entertainment is in keeping with other islands we've been to - we didn't take part in it on this holiday - I can't really think of much worse then kareoke on this type of holiday.
I would very much recommend this island - if you've done your research before you go, you'll not be in line for any unexpected surprises!
