We stayed at Angsana Ihuru after first staying six nights at her sister resort Angsana Velavaru. For a true paradise island feel, Velavaru is better than Ihuru. Velavaru island is bigger, the white, sandy beaches are wider and it has a romantic quality of remote serenity being 40 minutes away from Male by seaplane but Ihuru has other qualities. The house reef at Ihuru is superb, abundant with fish, eagle rays, turtles and reef sharks, it is a scuba diver's dream complete with the final touch of even hosting a sunken wreck... Fantastic!
The island is small and in some areas there are sand bags in evidence but the villa gardens are right on the beach and you are spoiled for choice, as to where to relax. There are well situated sun loungers, a gorgeous wicker half igloo that you can curl up in either with a good book or your partner and a traditional Maldivian swing to get in touch with your 'inner child', all for your own use, it's great.
The choice of food available is also better than Velavaru, although both resorts have a delicious choice of cocktails, alcoholic or non-alcoholic and all made with fresh ingredients.
Regarding price, the Ihuru room rate appears to be higher than Velavaru but this breaks even when you consider the price of the seaplane, which is quite expensive. Speedboat transfer to Ihuru took only 25 minutes and cost about USD120 per person whilst the seaplane flight to Velavaru took 45 minutes and cost USD440 per person plus in our case, USD121 excess baggage. The plane is very small, so weight is important and even your handbag will be weighed at check-in for your seaplane flight.
The Spa at both resorts are relaxing havens for luxurious self indulgence and both are well worth the money. The therapists are trained to Banyan Tree standards and really know how to professionally pamper their guests, its a world apart!
The Dive Centres at both resorts were well organized and staffed by true professionals. Diving was 'made easy' for us by both resorts and the quality of leadership and instruction by the Dive Instructors faultless but with no trace of arrogance - it was really fun Diving!
Ihuru has the edge on Velavaru for diving simply because of the ease of access to the house reef. It is a wonderful reef and so easy to access from the shore.
We plan to return to the Maldives soon and the debate was which resort to return to. Angsana Ihuru is the likely winner, as the superb reef coupled with the commitment shown by the resort to maintain its reef & marine life makes it the preferred romantic diving holiday destination....But then again....it is a hard choice!
Room 32 was on the sunset side of the island and the sunset was dramatic-beautiful!
