“4th Visit to Makunudu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

We were so looking forward to our 4th visit to the island. There were problems from the minute we stepped on the island. We had emailed previously as every time before requesting a room in the area we normally have (nos 32-35) we were allocated no 25 the worst room on the island. There is no beach and no decked area for the sunbeds they are under shade all the time and to access the water you have to climb over a wall dropping aprox 3ft into the water. After complaining we were offered room 10 this is a noisy room adjacent to the staff quarters on the wrong side of the island (this time of year you loose the sun early afternoon 4ish) for us. After complaining again we were offered no18 a great room with a large beach area and only one next door room. When i questioned the reception staff why we were not given a room we requested we were to ld that they did not realise we were returning guests but when we first checked in i was given a voucher for the spa he said was for returning for the 4th time and we had been greeted as returning guests!. we then settled in as normall nothing appeared to of changed at first however as we spent more time in the restaurant you could tell the number of waiters had been cut. The food was as good as ever the boys did their very best but the service was appreciably slower. The bar Shar, Bala and Habib were as excellent as ever this appears to be the only area of the island to maintain previous makunudu standards. The staff party which happens once a month was a major issue . This starts at about 10pm and carries on to 1am on the area of the cocktail beah bar it is hours of loud music which would put a night club to shame and dancing girls not what you expect from a quiet romantic island in the maldives. The dive school was as excellent as ever many thanks to Daniel and Andrea, hope the parrots are well. The spa was very good, a good range of treatments and carried out very well. However the spa is still located next to the dive school making it a little noisy at times. Booking appointments for the spa is still a problem you have to try and catch the girl when she is not doing treatments and this can involve a few wasted walks up and down from your room area . It would be much simpler if bookings were done in reception we all have walk through regularly.Do not get me wrong Makunudu is still a lovely place to holiday however the special things about the island seem to be disappearing. Please makunudu management listen and get our makunudu back to what it was, Quiet, Peaceful, good food served well and efficiently and everyone was made to feel special. Not once during our stay was our bed decorated i know this is down to the room boy but it is a lovely touch and i cant understand why it was not done when last year it was done most ,days it was not even done on our last night The final insult was on leaving before there has always been someone to see you off and make you feel it was appreciated that you chose their island. This year as we left in horrendous rain it would of been appreciated if someone would of been there to say goodbye and take the umbrellas. There was only the luggage boys and it felt very like, well go we have had your money there is always someone on the next plane. We had a lovely holiday but the island is not what it was all the returning guests were commenting on this and at least 2 other couples we knew and have met up with in previous years said like us they will not be returning. Such a shame Makunudu was so extra special and we had looked forward to returning for many years but we will not return again.

“Where do i begin..........”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

... well okay from arrival on Makunudu ....WOW!!!. this was our 6th visit to the Maldives and Makunudu is definately the best island we have been to. They are all good and are all pretty much the same although saying that Makunudu was the smallest being only 36 rooms, which were very authentic, comfortable and felt great. On approach from our speedboat journey the view was as expected a beautiful island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. We were welcomed with a cool cloth and a non-alcoholic cocktail which is all you need after a long flight. After going through the normal forms etc we were shown to our room which was beautiful, very authentic and clean. Our room boy was excellent, clean towels were provided daily, bed linen regularly, decorated bed a few times during our stay. We were extremely pleased. We loved the little road runners (water hens) round our room (we had our own little visitor daily) and on the island they were funny.

Once you leave your room to visit the beach it was wonderful walking through a little greenery and onto the beach which was cleaned early mornings, the ocean was as expected, snorkeld and swam. Beach should are needed for swimming in parts of the ocean as it cna be slightly corally although there are parts you can walk/swim without shoes.

The resturant was great real rustic, dark lighting made it feel real there were also wooden tables and chairs with candels and laid up nice, the service was excellent I called out table waiter Sugar, he was so helpful and very expert. The food was wonderful with buffet style breakfast and lunch, great choice even for the most fussiest eater. Different choices of eggs was available to go with a cooked breakfast, cereals were available along with fruit etc. The Al e carte meals five nights a week was excellent. the food menue was well thought out well done to everyone. On the tuesday night there was a beach bbq (weather depending), this was also excellent and on Friday nights it is Maldivian night which goes without saying was brilliant.

The bar was open from 10am until late althoguh AI finished around midnight. There is an excellent choice of drinks both soft and alcoholic, the white wine was the best i've tasted in the Maldives. All drinks were wonderful a great service too the staff were brilliant thansk Bala, Shah and Habib, hope the decking is finished (was being renewed at a fantastric pace and working all hours to get it finished to their guests, although we were never stopped going outside on the decking). Great service with smiles all round.

The reception staff were fabulous can't thank them enough especially Akrim, Jason (Ahmed) and
Jalil, thanks guys you made us smile every time we passed reception or needed anything. Was lovely to see your smiling faces first thing in morning until last thing at night and special thanks for coming up the jetty to see us off on our way home a wonderful touch..... we will definately be back.

To the new manager of the island please don;t change anything on Makunudu it is so real. I understand sometimes things need a little updating but it was the BEST island we have been to and a massive thank you to all the staff. Well Done....Caroline & Steve

“Honeymoon Paradise - Beautiful!!!! Oct2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

We have just returned from our honeymoon at Makunudu. We specifically chose this island as it seems rustic and personal, without the hype of a large resort or entertainment; being on our honeymoon we wanted privacy and relaxation...and WOW this was a perfect choice. Makunudu was simply the best place I have ever been in my life.
The service was outstanding, particular thanks to Akrim on reception and our waiter Samh who couldnt do enough for us.
The food was excellent. The buffet breakfast and lunch was always fresh and flavoursome with lots of choice, and the evening set meal was always fantastic. We found having your evening meal served properly to you instead of a buffet made it much more like 'going out for dinner' and therefore more special for the evening. The waiters couldn't do enough to help. As we were on our honeymoon we had a special private dinner one evening on the beach, we expected it to be just outside the restaurant but it was on the other side of the island, completely private and only lit up with candle light and lanterns. It was so special and romantic. I will never ever forget that evening.
The snorkling and beaches were beautiful, saw turtles literally just off the beach. Simply breathtaking!
We were in Villa no 7 which was a good location with a great patch of beach.
We tipped jut a few dollars every couple of nights as they totally deserved it.
The island is not suitable for families, there's no entertainment or pool but for couples, for relaxing and peace it is perfect.
We loved it so much, I would never go to another island if and when we visit the Maldives again, we may return for an anniversary in several years time.
Thanks Makunudu for the making our honeymoon so perfect! x

“Honeymoon Oct 2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Wow! We have just come back from 2 weeks at Makunudu. Its a perfect place for a quiet holiday, but with plenty to do if you want. We had room 18, which has a fantastc beach area, and only a neighbour on one side. At this bungalow you had chairs in the shade and loungers in the sun. On the other side of the island (no's 1-17) at this time of year you would lose the sun about 4 pm. We had sun all day. Some of the villas around the mid 20's have their chairs and loungers in the shade, with no room to move them into sun, so if you want sun, make sure you request this in advance.
The staff are all very friendly, the food is fantastic, I ate fish every day, but there is a huge choice if you not so keen on fish. We snorkled every day, and saw loads of fish, turtles, and sharkes. You can borrow marks, snorkles and fins, all free.
There were trips you could do;snorkling, fishing, both very good, and one to a local fishing village, I would not recommend this trip, as it is not a very pretty place (I was expecting huts, and fishing boats) but it was more like a small town, and just a way to get tourists to shops! If we had realised we would not have gone!
We found the room to be lovely, not run down as some people have mentioned, however we are not used to expensive hotels, so to us it was lovely. The hairdryer is not that clever, so recommend you take your own, I didn't and wished I had! The room boy came twice a day, and the towels changed every day, and the sheets changed regularly.
We had a private dinner on the beach, and that was very special. Our friends did the private meal on a sand bar and they said that was amazing!
The spa was lovely, the lady is called Taj, lovely treatments, only slight problem is the location of the spa, it is not in the best place, however having had a conversation with the new manager, he is looking to move it as soon as possible.
We had a couple of goes on the catamaran (free), Mahammed takes you out. We also took the canoe out ($22 per hour), there is also water sking and a dive school (both chargeable). There is also table tennis and a badminton court if you are feeling energetic.
The bar is open from 10am till late, choice of drinks on AI is very good, the house red wine was especially good.
I would highly recommend Makunudu, and we want to go back as soon as we have saved up!
I would be pleased to answer any questions, if you would like to ask...
Happy holidays!
Sarah

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

Makunudu Island is a small resort- perfect if you wish to spend some romantic lonesome time together!!!
The staff was very friendly, the Food delicious and the rooms allways clean. In Front of your bungalow you will find a small seperated place - just a few meters away from the beach - have a look at the fotos....
Instead of hp we booked all inclusive and i would recomend because drinks and other stuff are like everywhere else at the maledives not "too cheap";-)
All in all we enjoyed a perfect honeymoon and we will come again!!!
