5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

amazingly beautiful resort.. both overwater and island villas are great--the management and employees are wonderful and i would stay again,it was an absolutely great experience. We had trouble getting a last minute flight out to the island but they did everything to accomodate for that and we moved out to the overwater villas. They are amazing with a great relaxing atmosphere.

I went on a last minute trip with my sis and cousin to Angsana Velavaru and the 4-day trip turned out to be one of the most unforgettable holiday we have had. Right from the moment we touched down we were quickly attended to by friendly & efficient staff who transfer us to the Seaplane Terminal for our 35-40min flight to the resort. We arrived at the resort to a very warm welcome from the friendly staff and manager. We stayed in the best In-Ocean-Villa (IOV) unit that offered both the sunrise and sunset view & also had a 2nd bedroom inside. We were wowed by the IOV unit the moment we set eyes on the interior & all the amenities. The beautiful villa offered a luxury of space and everything was so well thoughtout. We had our own infinity pool and jetty to walk out to the lagoon to do snorlking at our private coral garden. There were so many comfortable places (deck chairs, beds, etc) to laze around to enjoy the sun, breeze & amazingly beautiful & clear sea & sky, including a 2nd floor with dining table, sofas, deck chairs and bed to relax. We had a great time snorkling around our villa where there were alot of colourful fishes big & small. Other activities we did include watching Stingray feeding (nightly at 7.30pm, unbelievable!), snorkling trip organised by the resort, banana boat ride and enjoying a relaxing massage at the Spa. Most of these activities are at the Main island of the Resort which is a short 5 min boat ride away (hourly boat provided). The beachfront villas are also located at the main island. We had most of our meals at The Azzurro restaurant on our side of the island & food was good. We also managed to watch the beautiful sunset and sunrise from our villa, and woke up early at 5am lying on the deck bed in complete darkness to admire a sky full of twinkling stars (we saw shooting stars!!)
To top it off, the staff were truly the Gem - from the Manager to the bell boy, reception, F&B, dive centre & marine lab. They were all so friendly & helpful and we could truly feel the sincerely & enthusiasium from their heart in their service. It was truly an Amazing break for us and this is what makes Maldives a Paradise on Earth!! We are looking forward to return to this paradise! ;-)

Room Tip: The IOV are definitely a better bet, and try to choose a unit that is not near the Jetty.

We spend a week at Angsana Velavaru and enjoyed a very personal service at the restaurant and the trip/dive centre.
There are a lot of trees on the island, brushes only at the shore, therefore the inner part loooks a bit anatural as all bushes a planted.
At low water swinning at the east side is not advisable, villas at the southeast part have lost their beach due to the waves, even concrete did not help.
It might be some 60% chinese guests, 20 5 russian and the rest from all over the world.
Meat at the buffet could be better, good teeth are needed. It is called lamb, but think it was mutton instead. The variety of vegetables and desserts ist excellent.

I have been to velavaru with my husband. It is our honeymoon and we had a wonderful trip in velavaru. We love the in-ocean villa very much and the pasta in Funa restaurant is very delicious. We will tell other friends to come to velavaru.

"Honeymooners experience" The place was breath taking and it was really amazing, the clear sea water, the white sands, the wild reef, we were staying at the sunset inOcean villa, the view was just perfect, the food was ok not great but ok, I surprised my wife with two things 1- a private barbeque dinner on the beach it was so romantic, 2- I reserved a whole island for a private sunset dinner it was located around 20 min away from the hotel and there is a chance of finding dulphins on your way there as we did, this place is excellent for honeymooners, there was lots of activities but we didn't have the time to attend all of them so I'm guessing a week will get you through all the activities in there
When we reached there we waited for around 2:30 hrs just to get our villa!! Knowing my booking was done few months back and paid everything before even getting there! And also when they tried to debt my credit card again! That was totally unacceptable and unprofessional. Also too many hidden expenses like a compulsory new year gala dinner! That costs 500 usd for two! Which we didn't know about untill 2 days before our arrival! I thought a 500 usd dinner will be amazing and unique but it was awful, it tasted bad and we couldn't even eat it! Everything in there was over priced, specially the food knowing you have no where else to eat. Also sometimes you'll have to call few times to get your stuff delivered like for example a snorkeling kit took them 2 hrs to bring it to our villa knowing its available at the reception. Also to know our room was dirty most of the time they don't knock to clean the room you'll have to call them to do so! Anyway that was my honeymoon experience in there and that how it went..

This was our first trip to the Maldives. At Velavaru we had an exceptional stay and our chests ached when we had to leave and fly back to reality. The location is spectacular and serene. I brought a book with me but I hardly read a page because the view never let go of my attention. Plenty of activities rounded out each day. The staff was friendly and attentive. Building a rapport with the local staff is one of our best memories. We were happy to hear their unique perspective on life in the Maldives and work on the resort. As a related tip, the Maldivian staff are more likely to have in depth knowledge of the resort and islands, whereas non-Maldivian staff tend to know less because, possibly, they are employed for shorter terms.

A few minor nitpicks meant this was not a perfect paradise, but overall we were pleased with our experience. I should add the resort was not at full capacity, so we did not feel crowded on such a small island -- it may be different during a peak time.

Here are some other tips:
#1. Do stuff early. An excursion may be cancelled due to unusually bad weather or not enough people are registered for it, so if you've waited until the end of your stay you may have lost the chance to do it. We recommend the house reef snorkelling, which does occur daily.

#2. Don't go full board if you have a light appetite. The heat and our appetites meant we were better off with a light, midday snack instead of a lunch. There was a lot at the breakfast buffet which we were happy to dive into. For dinner we preferred eating at the bars - on the island and at the ocean villas - so we could order a la carte. Better options for our taste, including a budget-friendly catch of the day.

#3. Look for promos on the island. We were surprised to see deals for food & beverage, the spa, and room upgrades advertised on the island. I suspect the spa was not busy one day because it offered a limited-time deal of 2 for 1. Meanwhile, if there is space in the ocean villas you can upgrade at a cost less than reserving the room beforehand. I wouldn't count on these deals being offered all the time, however.

#4. Stay at an Ocean Villa for at least 2 nights. One night just isn't enough. To really soak up the luxury of the IOVs you have to be there for a full day. I heard the record length of stay is 19 nights! Wow. Overboard. Three to five nights seems a good length. The service at the ocean villas is at a higher level than the island. In our view, it was more personal.

#5. Stay on the island first, then the ocean villas. The dual experience really drew us to Velavaru. I make this suggestion also because there is small chance that bad weather or a delay in flying to the Maldives in the first place means you could miss a seaplane transfer and, what's worse, your first night at the resort (this goes for all resorts). The risk of losing a night at the IOV would stress me out. Losing a night on the island is no good either, but in that event you would be sluicing off the bottom and not the cream on top.

#6. Bring small denominations for tipping. I was short of them. Big bills are kind of useless -- unless you're a madly big tipper. We felt no pressure to tip, but we did so when a staff member went the extra mile for us.

#7. Book a massage. A massage in our IOV was a highlight. The cost is comparatively affordable too.
