Stayed in a deluxe beach villa from May 26th to June 3rd with my husband and 2 children 12 and 14.
Flew with Qatar Airways Manchester Doha Male. Qatar were good but not up to Emirates standards. Had a long layover in Doha so used the oryx lounge for a bit of comfort. It was empty and very quiet. Free snacks and soft/hot drinks. No alcohol. Internet access available free. No chairs for sleeping in though - just did the best we could. Arrived at Male, collected luggage and was met by Conrad rep. Luggage was tagged and taken care of and we were taken by 'gold' minibus to the Conrad Lounge at the seaplane terminal. We were checked into our room there and given cold towels, juice and fruit. There was a massage chair for a complimentary massage but it wasnt offered and to be honest we were too tired. There was a delay with the seaplane which meant we had to wait an hour but there was plenty to watch so not a problem. I was very disappointed though not to get the gold Conrad plane - just the red maldavian air taxi for us! We were given little bags containing water, earplugs and refresher towels for the flight all of which were needed - it is roasting. Flight was amazing, although I thought we would see more islands than we did. Were met at the Conrad by our host who took us into the little seaplane lounge and went through a few things. We were given drinks, cold towels etc. My children are too old for the kids club but they were still given bags containing teeshirts with their names on and told they were welcome to the club any time should there be an activity that took their fancy. Activities at the club were generally free. I had requested deluxe beach villa 230 because it had a large pool and was infront of the best snorkelling area on the island and we were lucky enough to get it. The front entrance is up steps through 2 large wooden doors into a courtyard with fountain. A pathway to the left leads to a bathing pavillion with a sunken bath with 4 chairs, a chaise longue and candles. Straight ahead to the outdoor rainshower and then right to the vanity area with 2 sinks/mirrors and 2 resident lizards.
Through a door into the bedroom area which is nicely airconditioned and has a large walk in closet with safe, hairdryer, aadaptor, beach bags, flip flops, robes and Helly Hansen jackets in case of rain. There are umberellas by the door. The toilet and sink are off the bedroom and there is a desk area, nespresso maker with many different types of coffee, tv, ipod connection, dvd and cd player. The walls are all of sliding glass which can be opened during the day but if you do then beware of mossies and sand that gets everywhere. To the front is a terrace with 2 chairs and a table, 2 loungers and our fantastic pool which must have been 10 meters long and turns to a jacuzzi at one end. A path runs along the pool, through vegetation and a gate to the lovely beach area with loungers. You cannot see the sea from the room but you can hear it and you do have total privacy. It's a trade off really. During our stay we visited the spa retreat a couple of times. Bliss - total relaxation and quiet. It is over the water but with no view of the fish like the overwater spa. I must say that the mens string briefs and ladies disposable thongs are a must to keep any marriage alive. My son used the dive centre a few times and Natalie took great care of him. You can also borrow masks and snorkels free for the length of your stay from there. The snorkeling was good, we saw stingrays, many fish and a manta, but not as good as Bandos. I am also afraid to say that I saw more than one person standing on the reef. Why do people do it?
We always had breakfast at the Atholl market and it was great. The waffles are to die for and I cant think of anything that was lacking. You could juice your own fruit, eat Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Maldavian as well as the usual fodder. Breakfast can also be taken at Vilu with champagne or in the privacy of your villa but a delivery charge is payable. Evenings are low key but there is usually something going on in the Rangali Bar.
We ate mostly from the bar menu and enjoyed the wine and cocktails there but also ate at Sunset grill, ok - good quality but my husband was horrified at the portion size, and at Vilu which was completely empty. My son and I both had lobster ravioli which was good, but my husband and daughter weren't impressed with their duck and fish. We had a nice table with a cool breeze but had smokers from the vilu bar right next to us - not so good. The boat ride between the islands is fun as is the walk over the bridge at night. Did champagne at Ithaa which was fabulous, although In didnt expect children to be there but there were quite a few. The fish were amazing. We were luckiy enough to be able to keep our room on the last day til checking out time 4 15. We were taken back to the small seaplane lounge by our host, given water and earplugs then back on the seaplane to Male. We were taken care of until we were checked in by Qatar.
To sum up, it was expensive to get there and expensive whilst there. There were a few children in the resort but there was never a problem with them at dinner. They could be noisy on the beach during the day, but they were just having a good time and it was only once or twice. The worse problem was the large party of adults in two villas who would thump music out and spoil the 'ambience'. Would I go back? Yes in a shot but I think there are other islands calling me first.
