The W has become one of the most hyped brands over the past few years. Unfortunately, I've never stayed at a W that lives up to all of that hype or even comes close to leaving me with a feeling other than disappointment at checkout time......until W Maldives. My wife and I recently honeymooned at W Maldives for 8 days and the entire experience was simply remarkable! The beauty of the resort and surroundings are unmatched and we were very sad when it was time to leave. The "cool" factor was off the chart and every element of the resort design was well thought out. All of the staff was genuinely kind and warm. Every staff member you encountered, regardless of their position, warmly greeted you and said “hello.” Even better, they did it in a manner that wasn’t annoying and didn’t feel like a manufactured corporate culture. Service to the room was lightning fast....simply push the "whatever/wherever" button on the phone, make your request, and very quickly after hanging up the phone someone would be at your room filling the request. We especially loved that the resort was not kid friendly and caters primarily to adults. The last thing we wanted was to be surrounded by a bunch of loud, obnoxious kids while we were trying to enjoy our honeymoon. Many of the other resorts we looked at prior to deciding on W seemed to promote a lot of kid activities.
We stayed in an Ocean Oasis retreat and it was perfect! The size of the room, bathroom, and outdoor area was more than ample for a two people. The amount of privacy was wonderful (we loved the outdoor shower and for the 8 days we were there, this is the only shower we would use) and the room included everything you could possibly imagine. They had beach bags, beach towels, umbrellas, underwater cameras, flip flops, toiletries, snacks, all kinds of beverages (water, soda, beer, wine, champagne, vodka, scotch, whiskey, gin, rum), espresso machine, etc. right there in the room for your convenience. The inside and out were both wired for sound and had adapters so you could plug in your phone or iPod. The lighting in the room was very cool! Housekeeping did a fantastic job of keeping the room immaculate. Several times a day they would come in unprompted after we would leave to tidy up, remove trash, restock the snacks & beverages, remove old towels and replace them with fresh ones.
The amenities were first class all the way. The fitness center was large by resort standards and had everything you needed to actually get a good workout. The game room had a nice pool table, two foosball tables, and many card, dice, board, and domino games. The Away Spa was very good and the treatment rooms over the water without a fourth wall created a very unique spa experience. The sweet spot locations throughout the resort were so nice. Nothing fancy, just a spot to grab a water, soda, or ice cream.
A few things to know….at least from our experience:
Despite what Starwood’s website says, reservations to the restaurants are not required and quite frankly, a total waste of time. We made a few reservations in advance and all of them were botched up. The only thing that you’ll need to reserve is private dinners, but you can do that while you’re there.
This is not the right resort for a tight budget. While they have EVERYTHING at the resort, you are going to pay astronomical prices for it (i.e. Single Barrel Jack Daniels on the rocks - $40……that’s roughly one shot….not the bottle). If that makes you uneasy, then you should stay away.
With the exception of breakfast at Kitchen, which we thought was great, the restaurants as a whole are just “ok.” Please do not attempt connect price to quality….they will never align. If you’re a foodie looking for your next food orgasm, you’re not going to find it here. Fire was good, but far from great. Private dinner on Corral Terrace was really good. Fish was a disappointment. We tried it twice, but the quality, freshness and overall creativity of the menu was less than desirable. Being in the middle of the ocean, we were expecting better seafood. That being said, all restaurants score really high on ambience and service!
Overall, the attention to detail throughout the resort and in the room was amazing. They literally thought of everything a traveler could possibly want or need and had it available. The W hit a homerun in the Maldives! We would definitely go back and would profusely recommend W to anyone considering a trip to the Maldives.
If you want privacy, the Ocean Oasis is the way to go. If privacy isn't an issue, then the lago...
