“Excellent Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

BHR is an excellent couples getaway, especially for golfers. The resort is a quaint, romantic, understated mountain-top resort with stunning views and surrounded by virgin jungle. The rooms were very pleasant with a lot of light and reminded me somewhat of a Japanese ryokan. The food was simple, well-prepared and very tasty vegetarian cuisine. I recommend the lasagna ratatouille, the vegetable curry and any of the soups. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. The course was well beyond expectations. I don't know how they maintained it so well given how few grounds keepers we saw, but it was immaculate. The highlight of the trip was Margaret, a pint-sized local Bidayuh woman who grew up on the mountain and was full of ghostly tales. In addition, she gave one of the best therapeutic massages I've ever had, actually sorting out a nasty shoulder problem that I've had for months. Go there!

Room Tip: Go for the top floor. Also, there are no phones, tv's or internet in the room, so go to relax n...

Borneo Highlands is a great place for relaxing with beautiful landscape & spectacular view. Weather is cool in the early morning and night.
Paying for MYR199 nett for 1st night & MYR 159nett (Par room) for 2nd night with good hot American
Breakfast, free transfer from the highland foothill (takes 20 mins on a winding road); complementary entrance to the spa during the facebook’s fans promotion is a steal.

The room is small but cozy. There isn't any telephone, fridge or television in the room.
You may watch free movie at the in-house mini theatre or visit the spa with hot and cold Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna.
Ask for Ms Margaret, if you need a good message (20% discount for guest).

They have quite a number of paid activities- Mother Nature Challenge (Mt Penrissen) half day tour to climb to the top of Mt Penrissen – the highest peak
In Kuching at 4,363 above sea level & enjoy the breathtaking view at the top, 2 hrs tour will be Bidayuh Head House Trail, Rainforest Jungle Trail, Highlight Rainforest tour etc.
We took the Highlands Rainforest guided tour MYR30nett/pax – Kalimantan View Pt, Horticulture Nursery, Organic farm etc. Actually it is not difficult to do it yourself if you have strong legs, the path are winding and hilly. It’s better to visit the Kalimantan view point in the early morning.
There’s another spectacular view will be at the horse stable where you can view the distance sea of clouds.
It is about half an hour walk from the resort taking short cut from path facing the Monastery.

We took all our meal at Annah Rais Café which only served vegetarian food, so so and good (20% discount). It will be good to include tofu or dry bean curd in their meal instead of egg.
The vegetables were from their own organic farm.

We had a good time and we will come back again with more people next time when there’s a promotion.

PS: Taxi charges - airport to Borneo highlands resort MYR75, city to BH resort MYR100, Damai beach to BH resort MYR150 (consider good rate as I got another much higher quote), waterfront to The Spring Mall MYR15,
waterfront to Airport MYR23 to MYR26.
Shuttle van Damai beach to City MYR12 to MYR15/pax

The Borneo Highlands Lodge tries to be several different things, and does better at some than others. The beautiful 18-hole golf course is clearly the focus of the operation, and very well maintained. A gift shop stocks mostly golf-related items and plenty of shirts, but not much else. Even if you aren't there to play golf, management can arrange for you to use a golf cart to drive around the grounds.

The lodge also has a nice spa and offers a variety of treatments. The Kalimantan Viewpoint is located about 2 KM from the lodge, and at 3,281 feet above sea level, offers a truly breathtaking view hundreds of meters below into the Indonesian part of Borneo (Kalimantan).

Despite its location in the middle of the rain forest, the lodge does not offer any real nature activities, and does not have guides trained to lead hikes through the forest in search of birds or other flora and fauna. There is a nice hiking trail from the lodge up to the Kalimantan Lookout which is pretty well maintained (far better than hiking trails on the Kinabatangan River).

I noticed some reviews here complained about the vegetarian selections in the restaurant, but I found them to be overall quite good. The Malaysian spring rolls were very nicely done, as was the cream of mushroom soup. The pizza was decent, but their version comes with pineapple, which is not my favorite way to have pizza. Their "Healthy Juice" - a blend of celery, carrot, pineapple and peppermint without any sugar - is definitely worth a try.

For us here is really a hidden paradise in Kuching .We are really enjoy the peaceful and quite environment here. Borneo Highland gives you the chance to just let loose and relax while breathing fresh mountain air and enjoying dazzling scenery and amazing sunsets. The average temperature at this highland is about 18-28 degrees Celsius.
We enjoy our stay at The Club House room, the room is clean and we had a super fantastic view from the room . We enjoy the meat less meal here , thumbs up on their choices of food where at the Annah Rais Café, they have a selection of Organic Food from their own organic vegetable farm.
Seeing Kalimantan from 1000 meters above sea level is a must ! we will surely come back again !

We really enjoyed our 2D1N stay at Borneo Highlands Resort. The staff were very friendly and helpful and since we visited in the rainy season of Kuching, the resort was practically empty. Our room had an amazing view, and was simple and clean. No television required!

The restaurant (although vegetarian) was great and the food was fresh and very tasty.

The golf course was the highlight, so amazing (even for the non-golfer tagging alone). Clubs hired at 80 ringgit.

The spa was wonderful, all using natural products and with experienced and professional staff.

Overall, a great weekend getaway!!

We stayed six days relaxing and enjoying nature in this fantastic location. Definite no place for party and meeting people.
The adjacdent golf course is a must for golfmaniacs. Even it was raining all night long the maintenance of the course allowed a decent round. Surronding and views are simply spectacular.
It is expensive, but worth the money considering you play golf as accomodation includes unlimited rounds of golf

I heard from friends that it is not worth going all the way to Borneo Highlands Resort to play golf nor stay in the hotel as it is poorly maintained. Despite their discouragement I wanted to try it out as I heard that the hotel was renovated 3 years ago and upgraded. The price for staying in the resort is not cheap and though I was warned of the vegetarian meals I went anyway as I was visiting Kuching.

On arrival the room looked nice even though it is very small. Then the teeny weeny bathroom started to get wet each time I used the sink. I reported to the reception and they replied that it was nothing wrong and they just wiped it.

By 10 pm the bathroom was still wet and they told me that the staff was off duty and there was nothing wrong. How can that be? I had not showered nor use the bathroom and still it is wet. Then they changed room for me in the middle of the night. So stressful!

There is a lift in the resort. However it is always out of order and if you stay on the 2nd floor and the amenities are in the basement you really have to walk up the stairs for your meals, etc....Not recommended for those who cannot walk!!

The hotel is supposed to be renovated but the wifi is out of order each time there is rain or thunderstorm.....and it rains everyday in the afternoon.

The vegetarian meals are not worth trying.....unless you are absolutely hungry and need to feed a gnawing stomach.

There is a theatre for film show to occupy the guest but the films are so outdated and so old they might as well not provide the guest with this entertainment.

I am glad that I went to see what the renovated Borneo Hills Resort is like but I will not bother to visit it again as there are other stresses to put up with if you are thinking of going there for a good time of relaxation for golf.

Room Tip: Make sure that the rooms are dry when using the sink or toilet
