“Always a pleasure, but please kill the internet fees”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

I've been coming to this hotel for years and I appreciate the staff, the location, feeling of the place. They have recently refurbished the rooms (much needed), and the rooms with the river view are terrific, even though the view of the river is blighted by the Dewan, which folks call the "lemon squeezer" - an insult to Sarawakians perpetrated by you know who.

But in this era, where even the cheapest hotels and resthouses offer free internet, it's surprising and annoying that the Hilton charges (a substantial amount) for in-house internet. They have advised me that this is because the internet is provided by an external third party. Also I understand that there are steps to provide this service in-house. That development can't come too soon.

Hilton Kuching is perfectly located - just by the river. Service was very friendly, capable, but very slow. Rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated with local touches. Compared to the other river front business hotels, this is by far the preferable option. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Kuching if I had the choice.

We stayed in two different rooms at this hotel during our wonderful two week Page and Moy trip to Borneo. Both rooms had an outstanding river view looking across to the pagoda-like parliament building. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable although the bathroom in the first of the two rooms was tired, with some fairly nasty grouting.

Very handy for all the restaurants and shops in town. Extremely polite and attentive stuff in reception. I do get irked, though, by hotels that still charge outrageous prices for Internet access, although you can get thirty minutes for free if you take your netbook down to the coffee shop and purchase anything there.

Recommended on balance.

Pros- very near to great food joints such as Tumis Restaurant and Topspot Rooftop Seafood. Taxis always ready to send you to your destination.

Cons- The hotel building is very old. The lifts creaked! Toilet plumbing has a foul smell! Reception was always under staff! At night the club nearby was a bit too loud for my comfort. I had slight difficulties falling asleep.

We recently stayed here (two couples) on the executive floor 12th floor - and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The executive lounge is very comfortable for relaxing at the end of a busy day and a quiet place to check emails, do some work etc. Our room (11th floor) had a great view of the river and was very comfortable - the feather pillows are the biggest pillows I have ever seen. The bed was very comfortable and the room clean. Breakfast was fine - a bit less variety than what I have seen in other hotels. Staff were attentive and helpful.

The club room was roomy, clean, great river views, massive bathroom, quality toiletries and they had taken real need of my health requirements and our anniversary. Spotlessly clean in all areas especially the swimming pool which for a city hotel was just perfect and far bigger than the Shangri-La Pool in Kuala Lumpur, you could actually swim properly. Staff were polite, chatty and with a great sense of humour, could never do enough for you and the freshly squeezed apple juice in the club lounge is the stuff of dreams when you get in hot and thirsty. Also they cook a pretty good omelette for breakfast. Evening cocktails and snacks were a lovely lazy time of day with the exception of a rowdy crowd on one evening but in the end we found their brashness amusing!.

Have noticed so many people nit picking in reviews and wonder who stepped on their toes as I think you have to be realistic when looking at the service industry and it was hardly as if the rates were exhorbitant however I do get worried by negative reviews however sensible I try to be but I can honestly say we had an excellent 5 night stay in early september and would recommend it to anyone. It certainly has a great location, if you dont want to eat in the hotel then there is the lovely James Brooke local restaurant over the road or for a quick cheap local lunch we were guided to a hidden food court through the alleys opposite for perfect noodles and soup by the really excellent travel agent Peter & his lovely wife Dolores (in the foyer) who deserves their excellent reputation. They really took into account my mobility issues when planning our trips and allowed me to move at my own pace.

We spent some time chatting to the manager who was really helpful and informative whilst discussing the challenges faced when taking over a new establishment - what he is doing is working and we wished we could have had a chance to try out the Batang Ali Longhouse when he explained the cultural infrasctruture around it. The club service was as good as any we had at the 3 Shangri-la properties on the rest of our tour and the bed was more comfortable. We would be very happy to return and who can complain at paying a miserly £6 for a 30 minute ride in an executive taxi to the airport at the very end of it all.

Thank you to everyone for a memorable start to our anniversary trip - much appreciated!

Room Tip: Get a high up club room excellent views.

I use to have glittering images of Hilton until I stayed in Kuching Hilton. I think its not that glamourous anymore. I worked part time in PJ Hilton like 20 years ago and then it was HILTON!! Those were the days...sigh.
Anyway nothing really wrong with this place and nothing so great either. The lunch buffet was pretty average. I skipped breakfast on both days of my stay so no comments on that. The room service was pricey and again average. The fried rice was yummy but it came with 3 sticks of cold satay and flat peanut sauce. I enjoyed the king size bed and the linens was clean and crispy. However the carpet has some musky smell. Well not everyone goes down smells the carpet but I was working out it my room so I had up close and personal encounter with it. No big deal though. Thank god the room was spacious. I did circuit training and zumba in the room. So not bad at all. I avoided the gym. It was well equipped but when I visited it was empty and no one was manning it. Felt a bit creepy. But I must say it was 10.30pm at night when I visited it.
All the hotel staff that I had encountered from front office, concierge, room service, restaurant and house keeping had been nothing but polite and courteous.
