“Wonderful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

I stayed here for three nights and can't say enough about the place! The owner is hands on , so friendly and makes you feel at home. The place was spotless! Room was ample size and comfortable. The only thing I would suggest is thicker mattress for the bed. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and would highly recommend this place to everyone

We stayed in the 3rd floor bedroom closest to the showers (Room 6) for 8 nights in May 2013

The Good
Bindi. She's awesome, helpful and cute as a button.
The A/C. Nothing beats Threehouse's A/C after a day in the Jungle.
The semi-outdoor showers on the third floor. Try it.
The location. Next to a bevy of wonderful eateries, a mall, and 4 blocks from the waterfront.
The full kitchen with shared fridge & stove.
Free Toast & Jam for breakfast.
Nice little porch areas.

The Bad
Nothing huge - can get a little noisy on the second floor next to the kitchen and the internet can be spotty.

The Other Stuff:
Our favorite places to eat near Threehouse - Borneo Delight and Life Cafe.
Mall with a full grocery store about 3 blocks from Threehouse.
Bindi always knows what bus you need to be on for the National Parks.

The Upstairs Porch & Bathroom:

Room Tip: Try not to stay in the room next to the kitchen. I can get a little lively in there late at night.

I stayed here for four nights in the 6-bed Dorm. The Dorm itself was not the best I have ever stayed in...it had no window, no air-con and the mattresses weren't the best either. Therefore the air in there was quite sticky and the black-painted walls gave it a smaller feeling. I think that a light wall color would already so a lot to upgrade the Dorm.
On the other side it was clean, same as everything else in the BnB. There was a nice kitchen, a very nice common room AND a rooftop sitting area!
Bindi and Steven were always helpful and supportive.
A light breakfast was provided. The use of the fridge and dishes was very convinient.
I would stay again, but maybe not in the Dorm.

Room Tip: The Dorm is not the best option...the private rooms are much better.

My main priority is cleanliness and this place exceeded it.I don't remember seeing a spot of dirt in my 8 days here.Bathroom was clean and mostly dry.Especially love the bathroom on the 3rd floor.Kitchen was also almost spotless clean everytime.Stayed in a private room with AC,a must in these weather.Common room has an amazing collection of DVDs if you wanna chill out.And you can smoke in this neat little corner in the upper floors.Location is pretty great,5 mins walk to the waterfront.Nearest foodcourt 3 mins away with 7-11 opposite it.Lots of thing to eat in the wet market 10 mins walk away too. There is also a shopping center behind the hostel if you need your McD fix.Bindi the owner is ever so sweet.Incredibly helpful with suggestion and helping me to call for taxis and tour agencies. She is also very friendly and always up for a chat. After staying there for a few days,it really felt like home. This place has a great vibe.I guess Bindi's energy is infectious maybe?

The downside is that the walls are REALLY thin,i could hear the couple next door even though they were talking softly. The floors are made from hardwood. So you can hear it clearly when people move around.Internet is crappy, the owner says its the area problem.Hopefully they can get it fix soon. And the dorm is pretty substandard too.No windows and ventilation, only a ceiling fan in a room that;s suppose to sleep 6.You get what you paid for.Other than that, this place is FABULOUS.Will definitely be coming back.

Some places are hard to review. Threehouse is one such place for us.
The pros:
The place has a spirit that is tangible, mainly due to the owner, Bindi and Steven. Both are kind, helpful, and welcoming.
The room air conditioning works well.
The location is excellent for enjoying the waterfront and Chinatown in Kuching and is close to city bus options.
The staff will do and dry your laundry in a few short hours for a very reasonable, price.
It is affordable.
It is clean and Steven works hard to keep it so.

The Cons:
There is no really useful social space.
The walls are the thinnest we experienced in a year of traveling and sound really travels.
The Internet is dysfunctional
The bathrooms/showers are some of the smallest we have seen and waiting was common.
The beds and pillows are pretty uncomfortable.

Facility wise, I would give a two or three star but the staff are a 5!

Thank you for review and kind words. It makes me happy as a owner when my staff gets credit for their work and are appreciated by the guests.

Internet problems during this period was affecting all of us here making it a bit of a hard time, especially since there was nothing we could do about it ourselves, but it seems like that has been solved to our big relief since we have always tried to keep up with the best wifi solutions and speed in Kuching. Yet ofcourse it can not be compared with internet connections in Europe, but we try to keep up with the best connections available for this part of the world in Borneo.

I find it interesting that you are mentioning there is no sitting areas since we have a separate common-room with movie selections and books, a rooftop sitting area, a kitchen with tables and chairs, a table with stools outside our front and a couch in the lobby area which is much appreciated by majority of our guests, who has experienced so many other places having none at all.

For the showers and toilets, we think they are convenient and we do our best to keep them clean and fresh. We have got compliments for having bathrooms on each floor, and this is the layout of the buildings in this part of Kuching which we have then worked from to make the best solutions from what we have. Sometimes when it's more crowded with people that move in groups the waiting time might be a bit longer but normally it is not a problem since people have different schedules (from my own experience and others words as i also live here and use the same bathrooms as everyone).

And when it comes to pillows and beds, this is really a person to person matter what i have realized. Some think they are the good, some don't.

Anyway, i appreciate you for taking your time writing a review and you are more than welcome to stay with us again.

The owner, Bindi, opened the door for us after our plane landed quite late in the night. She gave us a full tour and quickly let us get to bed before putting out breakfast for people who would be waking up shortly. Bindi helped us get to where we needed to go, gave us recommendations for the surrounding area, and called taxis whenever we needed one.

The hotel was really clean, welcoming, decorated great (with a cozy hangout room), it has a fridge for everyone to use, and the rooms have air-con! We would highly recommend staying at Threehouse, and we wish we could have stayed there longer (Although we may be heading back that way to get a tattoo done by Bindi's husband, who is Internationally recognized and Borneo's best ink artist).

A quick note however, the walls are rather thin :)

We booked here one night and we stayed there 4 nights (our longest stay after 6 weeks traveling). Oke the walls are very thin and you can hear everything but that is not a problem if you met Bindi and her staff. It's a very good location and it's nice that you have a kitchen so if you want you can make food. Thank you Bindi and Steven.
