“Awful...only redeeming quality was the breakfast”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2008

The service was awful matched by sub-standard rooms.

Knowing that our flight into Kuching was scheduled to arrive late (10pm), I called the hotel the day before to a) confirm our arrival and b) confirm that our room would have two beds. They advised me that yes, yes, everything was OK, but they would be charging me the first night. Fine. When we arrived the next night they had NO rooms with two beds. I was traveling with my father so this was a problem. The hotel was not at all apologetic and it was not until I got testy that they even considered doing anything. Ultimately they upgraded us, for one night, to the grand suite, which was huge, but still only one bed. The next day they were on our case all morning to move to the appropriate room.

Even in the grand suite the room was dodgy. Old, mildewy, etc.

The food for the breakfast was great, but the other restaurants were terrible and the western food restaurant was not even open on Sunday nights.

All in all I would never stay at this hotel again. I have never said that about a hotel before and hope never to have to say it again.

All you need to know is that this is one grimey hotel. The carpets are stained and worn. The furniture is cheap and scratched. The bathrooms are pinkish brown with horribly loud plumbing. The lounge is a morgue. If I had to say one good thing, it would be that check out was fast and that's all I wanted after staying there!

I Have just returned from attending a conference in Kuching and stayed at this holiday Inn. The hotel is well situated for shops and restaurants and is just 10 minutes from the local airport. It has splendid views over the Sarawak river ( ask for a river view room). Rooms were found to be clean and serviced daily. Perhaps in need of a little re-decoration but this did not spoil our stay, Buffett breakfast was plentiful with a wide range of eastern and western choices, plenty of healthy eating options with seasonal fresh fruit. Staff were most helpfuland the door service for organising Taxi's was always available. I am now considering this place for a holiday

Great location right on the bank of the Sarawak River, the Cat monument (I kid you not!), and restaurants. Also, in the evening, there is a very pleasant stroll along the bank of the river to be had. However, the hotel is starting to look very tired now, and could do with refurbishment. The main bar area is a bit dingy, but the breakfast/restaurant area is OK. There is a small pool, not really big enough if there are a lot of people or you want to do some serious swimming, but OK. Limited number of sun loungers.

The windows are single glazed, so if you don't mind listening to the call to prayer from the local mosque early in the morning, then you should be OK; if you are not interested, then keep the earplugs from the aircraft, and use them.

There is a fabulous new government building taking shape on the opposite side of the river that should provide spectacular views if you have a river-view room - should be finished sometime late 2008.

Adequate hotel, but no plans to go back there any time soon!

We spent 3 nights and were very pleased with the room , the service and the meals. The hotel is now under a European manager which must have helped. The 5th floor is the "Executive Club" floor and has superior rooms and suites for little extra cost. This floor has its own reception desk and adjacent large lounge room with complimentary coffee, soft drinks and nibbles. A new computer for internet is free. The ground floor dining room has good Malay cuisine and room service was prompt. We didn't try the upmarket Chinese restaurant.

  • Disliked — Very crowded at breakfast due to a convention

We stayed for 2 nights in Holiday Inn Kuching. The rooms were very ordinairy for the price. The double bed was quite small. Breakfast was fine and the hotel well located. The place needs a good refurbishment to demand the prices that it does.

Stayed 2 weeks at the Holiday Inn in February as part of an 8 week stay in Malaysia.

We found the hotel to be dirty, noisy and quite unwelcoming, particularly the "reception" staff. Totally without humour, sullen, unsmiling and unhelpful. We needed to approach them on 2 occasions and each time we felt we were interrupting someone who felt they were rather too important to be dealing with mere customers.

The hotel itself is not too clean, the rooms are in need of decoration, lights do not work and the windows are constantly misted because they are only single-glazed. The river view side is noisy from Friday night through to Sunday night with karaoke and parties but the hotel will point out that "it will end at midnight".
So don't expect to do much sleeping on weekends!

Overall the hotel was poor and the reception staff diabolical, simply not worth it.
