This is our second trip to Kuching, after our last one in 2009 when we stayed at the hilton. Being too expensive this time, we stayed at the Pullman instead.
It is a modern hotel, with a lovely lobby , nice views from our hotel room and the lift lobbies on the higher floors ... and a modern mall (nothing worth shopping), but good food and beverage outlets in the mall. And the mall is accessible from the hotel by a specific lift lobby.
The hotel food itself is not cheap by local standards, and not particularly good (though ok). My wife's steak was disappointing and they could not provide mustard sauce.
So after the first meal, we spent all our subsequent meals at the food outlets at the mall downstairs ... cheaper, and with a greater variety ... and some stay open till almost midnight on weekends.
In comparison to the hilton, the Pullman pool is less inviting as there was little shade from the sun and not enough plants. While originally planning to spend 2-3 days by the pool, we spent one hour in total at the end of it.
The bedding in the rooms was fantastic, and the rooms are well appointed. You also have a choice of pillows, an option I did not get a chance to try. The bathrooms have a spectacular view .
If anything is a potential problem, it would be whether the hotel can keep up the standard of cleaning and maintenance in the coming years as the building ages. Even now, you can see glass panels inadequately clean and stained ... and in our bathroom, things are starting to deteriorate or suffer from a lack of cleaning. Thankfully the hotel is still new.
the hotel spa was quite good, and we enjoyed our massage there. Overall, service was quite good.
Location wise ... it is convenient though not as nice as the river-fronting Hilton. However, the Pullman is on a hill so it commands a better view. It is also near to the "Top spot" hawker centre that locals and tourists visit for seafood.
The hotel is also a (long) walk all the way to chinatown and the malls on the other side of kuching ... through the old town with its upcoming new cafes.
In my opinion, only the Pullman and hilton are viable as good class hotels in Kuching City. It's a pity that the other option (4-sq sheraton?) is really too far away to be convenient... that one is nearer the airport.
