“Modern and convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

This is our second trip to Kuching, after our last one in 2009 when we stayed at the hilton. Being too expensive this time, we stayed at the Pullman instead.

It is a modern hotel, with a lovely lobby , nice views from our hotel room and the lift lobbies on the higher floors ... and a modern mall (nothing worth shopping), but good food and beverage outlets in the mall. And the mall is accessible from the hotel by a specific lift lobby.

The hotel food itself is not cheap by local standards, and not particularly good (though ok). My wife's steak was disappointing and they could not provide mustard sauce.

So after the first meal, we spent all our subsequent meals at the food outlets at the mall downstairs ... cheaper, and with a greater variety ... and some stay open till almost midnight on weekends.

In comparison to the hilton, the Pullman pool is less inviting as there was little shade from the sun and not enough plants. While originally planning to spend 2-3 days by the pool, we spent one hour in total at the end of it.

The bedding in the rooms was fantastic, and the rooms are well appointed. You also have a choice of pillows, an option I did not get a chance to try. The bathrooms have a spectacular view .

If anything is a potential problem, it would be whether the hotel can keep up the standard of cleaning and maintenance in the coming years as the building ages. Even now, you can see glass panels inadequately clean and stained ... and in our bathroom, things are starting to deteriorate or suffer from a lack of cleaning. Thankfully the hotel is still new.

the hotel spa was quite good, and we enjoyed our massage there. Overall, service was quite good.

Location wise ... it is convenient though not as nice as the river-fronting Hilton. However, the Pullman is on a hill so it commands a better view. It is also near to the "Top spot" hawker centre that locals and tourists visit for seafood.

The hotel is also a (long) walk all the way to chinatown and the malls on the other side of kuching ... through the old town with its upcoming new cafes.

In my opinion, only the Pullman and hilton are viable as good class hotels in Kuching City. It's a pity that the other option (4-sq sheraton?) is really too far away to be convenient... that one is nearer the airport.

Room Tip: Get a river facing room. The view is a lot better.

We booked a club room and on arrival were escorted to the club reception desk and a smiling hostess assigned us room #2321. The starkly modern, functional room with laminate floor offered a panoramic view over Kuching and the area beyond. The king bed was very comfortable, and the room was quiet day and night, making for sound sleep. Both room and bathroom were very spacious, the room being equipped with desk, seating group, in room A/C control, safe, fridge stocked with complementary soft drinks and water, replenished daily. A orchid arrangement graced the couch table as did a complementary fruit plate. The equally spacious bathroom came with a panorama window next to the tub, a glass enclosed walk-in shower, a large granite topped vanity counter with plenty of space, robes and slippers. Absent were Iron and ironing board. The room was serviced daily and was excepting a few scuff marks on white painted walls very clean.

The club on the 22nd floor offered a for Western taste buds somewhat meager selection of food items in comparison with other hotel clubs. As a scotch drinker I was surprised to find only Bourbon on hand, yet Scotch available in the lobby bar. While the club offered endless 360 degree views over Kuching and two free to use PC terminals, unruly children rampaging noisily unchecked by the obviously intimidated staff spoiled the club visits. It was not the quiet ambiance for a snack and/or drink one would expect to find in a club facility with a posted policy of no children. As a result we used the club sparsely.

The breakfast buffet in the ground floor restaurant offered a vast spread pleasing Eastern and Western taste buds alike. The buffet was offered also in the evening, yet a la carte orders were accepted as well. Dining in the coffee shop and the on-site Chinese restaurant required one to dress in clothing fit for the Arctic as thermostats in both restaurants were set seemingly to please Eskimos.

A two story shopping mall with limited offerings and a food court is below the hotel. The hotel on a small rise above the town is only a short walk away from the water front promenade and the center of Old Town. A tour desk off the lobby arranges excursions to near and farther points of interest to the tourist. All is all, the disappointing club aside, the Pullman served us well for our six night visit of Kuching, and it makes a comfortable base to explore the area.

We stayed three nights. We had requested a non smoking room with 2 beds (to avoid problems)on a high floor with a nice view but we got a room with one double. Seeing that we are two males, with a blush on her face the receptionist changed our reserved room and gave us a room with two beds. But she forgot the non smoking request.

The room on the 16th floor had a large window overlooking part of the river and the charming city; the bathroom was very spacious as well. The beds are very comfy.
The swimming pool and jacuzzi are great. The location is fine, close to the riverfront area.
The staff is correct. We did not try the hotel breakfast but had great noodles and roti's in a local coffe shop / restaurant in the back street of the hotel.

Almost perfect, but not 100% perfect because of no wifi in the room, a poor selection of TV channels, an empy fridge, and a key card that did not work most times to activate the elevator and for opening the room.

wonderful stay!
kuching area s beautiful.
i had standard room with large window and view on the city.
you get all the amenities even scale , weight, yoga mat and prayer mat, cooffe&tea maker, news paper etc..
the bathroom has shower and separate bath tube.
But the best are the swimming pool and fitness area! the swimming pool is large enough to train and swim seriously and the gym is new and you can enjoy 4 class x week (asian style :))...jacuzzi outdoor and indoor (warmer), sauna and steam bath.all the area is very clean ..the weather s hot and humid so is very pleasant n the evening when you come back enjoy the swimming pool and relax in the jacuzzi
the puzzle restaurant has a wonderful buffet all day. is pricey, but try it once.
the staff superprofessional and smilng.
location very good.
Only 2 bad spot:
1.no complimentary wifi in the room.they give you lan 1 hour and then you have to pay 50 myr x day, but is working very bed.
2.the kids in the swimmingpool are like wildlife, very noisy and disturbing and the staff doesn't try to keep quite the area. so often we had to move from there.

Spent 4 nights in an executive room that we managed to book during Accor's 40% off sale! My husband, who has travelled a bit with work, says this is probably the best hotel room he has stayed in. New, clean, spacious and nicely furnished. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the bathroom was enormous. The executive lounge provided breakfast, all day tea and coffee, and evening canapés and drinks. Definitely recommend this 5 star hotel.

Newest address for a chain hotel. Rooms were absolutely large coupled with a huge bathroom.
Location wise is excellent - just a short little walk to the hive of activity of small little Kuching town. The hotel is adjacent and connected to a small shopping mall, although with limited variety of shops. A short stroll outside will give you more local options.

Staffs were friendly though slightly relaxed, reflecting the atmosphere and the way of life in Kuching, not a fault at all. Pleasant and sufficient although staffs at the Porch area seems more distant and not in line with the rest of the service standards, No welcome, no smiles, no byes and no Hi's, just a plain stare when you pass by!. Coffee House colleagues are obliging, ordered a snack item from their deli on the other side which was promptly delivered to my dinner table. Check in/out was a breeze with the pleasant and efficient front desk staffs.

Biggest draw would be the large sized, new rooms, (comparing to Hilton) Location

Room Tip: Higher floors will afford you better even better views, at the moment there are not many tall buildi...
