“A little bit of home in paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

This is a fantastic place to stay as it is away from the road and is literally on the outskirts of the jungle. Catherine was a wondeful host and was happy to sit with a beer in the evenings chatting, and I was enamoured with the dogs Shelly and Bella who came for walks with us so everyone knew where we were staying. My husband named a rather large spider, which he checked on every morning to see that it was still there! Breakfast was good, open house help yourself to coffee and tea during the day and a honesty box for the fridge drinks. I would happily recommend this to anyone but if a person cannot walk far they will need possibly a mode of transport although Catherine did offer to give you lieft if at all possible

Room Tip: I was in the room with a balcony so you could sit outside in privaate but I never felt the need to...

We spent 4 nights in Wallace Cottage at Nanga Damai. The location is so beautiful and peaceful. The jungle is literally on the doorstep. Within 2 hours of arriving, we could see monkeys from the veranda, geckos on the wall and the jungle noises were hypnotic. The garden is lovely and the small pool is wonderful to float in looking up at the trees.
The cottage is very basic but the air-con works and there was plenty of room for the 4 of us. The beds were clean and very comfortable. We all slept extremely well. The communal veranda was a lovely place to chill out and chat in the evenings and Wallace Cottage has its own long veranda, good for drying clothes on and monkey watching.
Polycarp and Louise were friendly and extremely helpful. Only sorry that we hadn't booked longer there.

Room Tip: Wallace Cottage isn't as well appointed as the 3 rooms available but it has such charm. Althoug...

We were very keen to spend some time by the sea as we live in land locked Nepal and this is monsoon time. We wanted somewhere quite where we could relax and enjoy peace, but also have some interesting things to do when the mood took us. Nanga Damai was the perfect place, more than fulfilling our expectations. It is such a lovely house, on the edge of the forest with views over the sea. Poly and Louise were such amazing, friendly hosts who could not have gone more out of their way to look after their guests. (Poly is the only person I have met with a beach named after him - find it in the 2013 Lonely Planet Guide to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei!)
There is plenty to do - walking along the beach to Santubong village, going up Mount Santubong behind the house (and experiencing real Borneo jungle), visiting the Sarawak Cultural Village around 20 minutes walk down the road, swimming in the sea at one of the several Damai beaches, to mention a few, or just lazing by the pool. There are several great places to eat close by, and the seafood is especially good. Poly and Louise will advise on where to go.
You do need to be prepared to walk unless you want to just relax and enjoy Nanga Damai, but that for us was no hardship. We spent 6 nights having the most wonderful time.

We stayed for four nights in the Ranee Margaret room. The room was clean and comfortable. The setting is absolutely beautiful. The owners have designed a very special property which makes for a very special place to stay. It's right on the edge of the forest, which we could watch from our window. Louise and Poly are very friendly and helpful hosts and we were able to enjoy their company, as well as that of other guests, on the lovely large terrace. If we were in the area again we would definitely make for this spot.

Room Tip: We were in the Ranee Margaret room which was described as small but it had plenty of room for us and...

We had an amazing time staying at Nanga Damai. Surrounded by the jungle but in close proximity to the beach, we couldn't have chosen better location for our visit to this beautiful part of the world. We found the room very clean and the communal terrace was a lovely place to sit back and relax - occasionally being able to watch the monkey's in the tree's nearby have their breakfast and dinner! Polycarp is the best host ever, always up for a good conversation and very keen to show us around the local beauties. We also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere feeling free to catch up, share a few drinks, with the host and other guests in the evening on the terrace. Nanga Damai is a slice of home in this far away place in the world.

I stayed for five nights in Wallace Cottage at Nanga Damai. I loved its quaint character and charm. The rooms were very clean and the fittings in the bathroom in keeping with the history of the cottage which used to be an old school house. I found reading on the veranda, listening to the sound of the stream and being literally only a stone's throw away from the jungle very therapeutic. I did like the fact I was away from the main house. However, it was only up a stairway to have a delicious breakfast with the best coffee I have had in a long time. The terrace was a lovely place to spend the evenings talking to other interesting guests and listening to the sounds of the jungle. I am glad there is a swimming pool as it was wonderful
to take a dip in and cool down. The comfortable loungers are surrounded by pretty gardens and a great place to relax. I really enjoyed the walk to Damai to the food court. I can really recommend the roti stall! Polycarp was alway more than helpful. In the evenings he would offer to drive me to a nearby restaurant which was very kind and much appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Nanga Damai and would definitely recommend it. It is a haven of tranquility and the perfect place to getaway whether it be for a break or to explore the area.

If you are in the Kuching area, it is definitely worth a side trip to Damai to enjoy a stay at Nanga Damai! There's probably someone who would prefer to stay at the nearby beach resorts (those with children, for example), but we couldn't have been more pleased with our stay here. Polycarp (the owner) and his staff are gracious and flexible, everything was clean, breakfast was good, other guests were friendly and interesting, and the jungle setting was amazing! In fact, our stay was definitely a highlight of our time in Sarawak....especially a clear, star-lit evening on our balcony, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, that was absolutely magical. Stay here if you can!!
