“Outstanding hospitality, relaxed and pleasant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2011

My husband and I and another couple stayed here during our 5-day visit to Kuching. In planning the trip we had excellent help and advice from Mildred via email. From being met at the airport, to help with restaurants, taxis, etc. everyone was most gracious. We spent two nights at Basaga, went to a longhouse one night, Bako National Park the next night, then returned to Basaga. Not only were we able to store our luggage during our excursions, but we were supplied a room at no charge in which to freshen up between excursions!

We had the rooms with the outdoor showers which were pleasant and spacious and away from any bar/restaurant noise. Breakfasts were fine and the meal we ate in the restaurant one night was very good. The bartenders were helpful to the point of keeping our own bottle of wine chilled for us!

We truly enjoyed Kuching, wandering the waterfront, visiting mosque and temples, exploring neighborhoods. Everybody was friendly and accommodating. We loved seeing the orangutans at Semmengoh, hiking through the jungle and getting a taste of longhouse life at Annah Rais, and watching families of monkeys at Bako National Park.

The service of the hotel was nothing fantastic, it was what was to be expected of a hotel although I do commend Brandon who was the airport pick-up service. Bathrooms and rooms are clean, but don't expect too much in the bath - it's all very basic. The rooms are simply furnished, clean and airy. What I didn't like were the wooden floors even on the outside corridors. Now if you're a light sleeper, you're not going to be very happy with the sounds of heels or track-boots, especially in the wee-hours of the morning.

I don't know about now but when I was there (actually in December 2009 - only manage to do this review now) - the breakfast offered was very basic and disappointing. Even if Basaga is near the shops, it would be great if a hearty breakfast is offered in case the guest doesn't feel too good and want to eat in for breakfast.

I have to commend the selection of dinner dishes - and the place comes alive at dinner time. Other than that, the location requires that you call a taxi every time you want to go out of the hotel.

We used this as a transit hotel while heading back to kuala lumpur. But the moment we landed this property charmed us instantly. The rooms were clean and spacious, the pool very charming.
The location was central enough for a long walk to the riverfront. The staff was very courteous and cooperative.
Dont think twice... go for it!

Really enjoyed our stay at the Basaga. The food at the hotel is good, very clean and prices reasonable. Rooms are small but comfy and it was a novelty to have an outdoor shower in our private courtyard.

The manageress (i think) was very helpful too, and the laundry service was very good, cheap and back the same day.

The only tiny niggle I have is that our room was on the ground floor and the people above us were noisy but thats not the fault of the hotel really altho maybe they could put small notices in the upstairs rooms asking for guests to consider those in the rooms below.

I think this is the first time ever that I reluctant to leave a hotel...
The hotel has nice ambiance and very good services. I like to relaxing by the pool and the restaurant serves fantastic food.

Not far from Basaga is Jambu, a restaurant and bistro. A VERY GREAT place to hang out at night!

Basaga is a good place to stay. Kuching isn't. At least, if you're visiting during the wet season (jan/feb). Basaga was a old school, with nice, open rooms and a good atmosphere. It's a 20 minute walk to the city centre, and not a nice walk (unless you like the smell of cars and stray dogs). The staff couldn't advise us a lot of places, because they had never been there, quite weird. We wanted to visit Kubah National Park and Matang, but the staff didn't even know the name. Next to Basaga is a quite new complex, with a karaoke bar. It kept me up for 2 nights. I guess Basaga is a good stay after hiking the trails and parks in dry season and you're in a deep sleep, if not, try another one.

We booked 3 nights here to get us going in Kuching. We ended up staying for 7 nights!

The place is wonderful- laid out in a lovely set of white colonial-style buildings set around a lush green area incorporating the restaurant, bar and pool. The grounds and rooms are kept in immaculate condition by the staff. The rooms are simple but clean and very comfortable- we were originally given a room in the main house which we found a little noisy because of the nearby by road. The staff gave us an alternative room in the side building which was wonderful, with a lovely outdoor shower to boot!

We spent most evenings on the veranda outside Basaga’s colonial white main house, which sits rather splendidly over a shallow carp-inhabited pool, enjoying the reasonably priced food (both Western and local options, both tasty) and a drink. Many locals use this which gives it a lovely bustling hum without ever getting noisy.

The staff were helpful and friendly all round.

Only slight downfall was breakfast, which while being ok didn't quite live up to rest of the hotel's standards. The walk into the centre of Kuching is not far, less than 2 km, but not always easy with the frenetic traffic and lack of pedestrian crossings- taxis are cheap though.
