“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We stayed here for a few nights on and off. Room we had was basic and fairly big. Agree that it smells stuffy when you first go in but this goes away in a few minutes. I found the place to be really good value, nice location on the river front and the place has very friendly, helpful staff. It's safe and secure and although I never stayed anywhere else in Kuching, I would stay here again if I went back. The building itself has plenty of charm and character.

“The friendliest ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

I was very happy about the incredibly friendly staff. They helped me with every little question I asked. They planned every trip for me, called the taxis I needed, even bargained with the taxi drievers about the prices. No charges for putting my valuables into the safe!

“Somewhere different!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

It's worth going to this hotel just to see the building! It's in the old Chinese quarter, on the riverside, a traditional place that people have been staying in for generations! There is a central, internal courtyard with rooms on several stories. They range from dorms to double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, but all the rooms are simple and basic. They are really good value, but the breakfasts are basic - make yourself tea and toast, but they are many places to eat nearby. The only downside we found was that the rooms can be a bit smelly when it rains - something to do with the drains, I think. So, go outside of the rainy season!

“Guesthouse with character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012

Arrived at this place at 8 in the morning without booking, after travelling overnight by bus from Brunei so we were ready to fall into any room, anywhere. Although check in wasn’t till 2pm, as the room was available we were given our keys, signed in and in our room within 10 minutes. This place has a lot of character the downstairs area of the reception area, has the feel of a ‘going out of business antique shop’ (I mean that in the nicest way), the roofless open areas inside the building give this building a lot of charm. There’s a really nice balcony at the front of the building looking out onto the river. We sat there with a cup of tea doing some people watching. For 115MYR we got a double room with huge double bed, nice and clean with aircon and with what looked like a new tiled bathroom. A basic breakfast, wifi available in public areas and staff that didn’t stop smiling. Near shops, restaurants and the waterfront. The only drawback was our room 113 had a particularly pungent smell about it like damp carpets, which the carpets weren’t. Which is a shame because this is a lovely little place to stay. Apart from that, a really good stay.

“Good Budget Base”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

We stayed here 3 times during our trip to Sarawak - two nights each time. When I booked it I was looking for something with a bit of local character rather than a run of the mill hotel. Its ideally located, being on the waterfront by the river and is an interesting old building. The staff were very friendly and the rooms quite basic but fine - the aircon worked, the shower hot and the bed comfortable. The first time we were here we were at the very back of the building, which was a bit noisy from other properties. The other 2 times we were in the middle of the building and these were quiet. The breakfast is just toast, but we cooked our own eggs in the microwave. I'd stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the middle of the building. Those at the front have the street noise, those at th...
