“Somewhere different!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

It's worth going to this hotel just to see the building! It's in the old Chinese quarter, on the riverside, a traditional place that people have been staying in for generations! There is a central, internal courtyard with rooms on several stories. They range from dorms to double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, but all the rooms are simple and basic. They are really good value, but the breakfasts are basic - make yourself tea and toast, but they are many places to eat nearby. The only downside we found was that the rooms can be a bit smelly when it rains - something to do with the drains, I think. So, go outside of the rainy season!

Arrived at this place at 8 in the morning without booking, after travelling overnight by bus from Brunei so we were ready to fall into any room, anywhere. Although check in wasn’t till 2pm, as the room was available we were given our keys, signed in and in our room within 10 minutes. This place has a lot of character the downstairs area of the reception area, has the feel of a ‘going out of business antique shop’ (I mean that in the nicest way), the roofless open areas inside the building give this building a lot of charm. There’s a really nice balcony at the front of the building looking out onto the river. We sat there with a cup of tea doing some people watching. For 115MYR we got a double room with huge double bed, nice and clean with aircon and with what looked like a new tiled bathroom. A basic breakfast, wifi available in public areas and staff that didn’t stop smiling. Near shops, restaurants and the waterfront. The only drawback was our room 113 had a particularly pungent smell about it like damp carpets, which the carpets weren’t. Which is a shame because this is a lovely little place to stay. Apart from that, a really good stay.

We stayed here 3 times during our trip to Sarawak - two nights each time. When I booked it I was looking for something with a bit of local character rather than a run of the mill hotel. Its ideally located, being on the waterfront by the river and is an interesting old building. The staff were very friendly and the rooms quite basic but fine - the aircon worked, the shower hot and the bed comfortable. The first time we were here we were at the very back of the building, which was a bit noisy from other properties. The other 2 times we were in the middle of the building and these were quiet. The breakfast is just toast, but we cooked our own eggs in the microwave. I'd stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the middle of the building. Those at the front have the street noise, those at th...

If you are trying to save some cash, and just looking for a place to crash as you might be out and about, this is the place for you. Facilities are basic including he breakfast.

The staff are warm and friendly and welcoming. There is free Wifi at the lobby. Affordable laundry service etc available.

The location is superb, being just by the waterfront and near all the tourist attractions.

We're after all a "Lodging" house and would provide as much good service as possible we could. Our breakfast is indeed very simple - it is a complimentary and it's especially for our guests who would like to check-out early in the morning. Moreover, there are a lot of eateries around our Lodge and won't it be more sensible to try out the local delicacies instead of the so-called "Hotel Food" ??? or better still - go to a nearby restaurant and I am sure their offers are better than any of the 5 stars hotels are offering !!
Unless you're in a resort where - you can't even have a decent cup of coffee then the scenario is different and indeed you are forced to stay in and have whatever the hotel have to offer.

Our rates are competitive and our standard is above the normal lodging houses (locally) and below the the hotel standards.

We stayed here for 2 nights (check in 04/05/2012) at the end of our Sarawak tour, and found it to be a good value (230.00 Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for two nights). The Kuching Waterfront Lodge is ideally located at Main Bazaar opposite the Sarawak River. It is within walking distance of traditional spice shops, antiques, jewelry & restaurants and not far from attractions like Tua Pek Kong Temple, Cat’s monument and Sarawak museum.

The Kuching Waterfront Lodge is a Chinese style lodging house providing very basic accommodation, it almost has a hostel feel to it except that it is very charming. Reception hall and kitchen area features Chinese-style décor of yesteryear and provides genuine sense of intimacy and pleasing ambience.

Most rooms have no windows. We asked for a room with window overlooking the Waterfront Esplanade and were a bit disappointed as the window in our room was actually opened into a balcony for common use and smoking area and was approachable from the common corridor next to our room. But then we realized that nobody stayed this part of house and we could almost “privately” enjoy this balcony. Last day in the evening we were lucky to watch Vesak day celebration (05/05/2012) with picturesque candlelight procession (the major Buddhist festival commemorating the birth and enlightenment of Buddha). It was really an impressive sight.

All rooms are very simple yet tastefully decorated and are equipped with air condition, bathroom with hot shower, TV and a telephone. There is no hanging wardrobe in the room. In-room refrigerators and coffee/tea makers are not provided and as alternative hotel staff offer to use these facilities in common kitchen room on the ground floor. The room service and house keeping are good. Breakfast is included but extremely poor (!). It is just coffee/tea with bread, butter, jam or Nutella-type cream.

The staff at the front desk was pleasant and helpful. Upon request hotel staff can organize shuttle to Sarawak Cultural Village (located 35 km away from Kuching) for 80.00 MYR per person. Airport transfer service for 4 persons with luggage is around 50.00 MYR.

This place has a great atmosphere, is well decorated and charming and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. The single rooms don't have windows so were a bit dark, but the doubles were much better. Beds were comfortable and there was a/c in the rooms. Rooms were clean. The best thing about the Waterfront Lodge was the fantastic location right on the waterfront. The location really couldn't be much better. Rooms were a bit overpriced but we enjoyed our stay here.

Room Tip: Room 110 was the best room! Big, comfortable double with good a/c. Single rooms don't have windo...
