“Wonderful Owners & a lovely stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

This place was great for us. The owners collected us from the airport, got us all sorted, sat us down with a map and gave us so much information, it was fantastic.
It is a flat up 2 sets of stairs and there are 3 rooms, but we were the only guests the entire time. You can't just 'walk-in' here because they have jobs and sort of 'rent' this out on the side as and when people book. But the beauty of that is, we had a whole flat to ourselves and they had free bottled water, breakfast, all sorts of tea/coffee in the cupboards and said to help ourselves to anything.

It was really nice to see how trusting they were, so I hope no one takes advantage of this. Theres a computer for you to use, you just make a note of what you use and add it on the bill.
They also had a cupboard with all the clean linen in and said there was spares if we needed anything.

I think we stayed for 4 nights and we only saw them once again before we left. We settled the bill with them then because I don't really like just leaving money on the side.
The only downside would have to be the noise- it backs onto a school, and everyday we were there they were in school (VERY EARLY, INCLUDING WEEKENDS!?!?!) making a lot of noise. The playground is right there. Wesley explained in Malaysia their kids have silly-long school hours and it's 6 days a week- that's probably where the UK is going wrong ;) ! But still, I have to admit it woke us up, but we're light sleepers. I'd still go back though!

The location was great also- right by a supermarket and I guess the 'heart' of Kuching. the cinema was nearby too and we saw a couple movies for a treat! :)
So if you're a couple or a group of backpackers who are going together, then this is for you.

Dear Nikki S,

Thank you for your review of Borneo Seahare Guesthouse. You may be pleased to know we have recently renovated the property, and are now operating the Guesthouse full-time 24hrs a day. This means we are now in a position to accept 'walk-ins' which are now a large part of our customer base. We also now provide free internet and wifi as well as all the previously available complimentary items such as simple breakfast, tea, coffee and mineral water.

Hopefully you will get a chance to visit us again and see the improvements!

The Borneo Seahare was a great surprise.

The Seahare is located on the second storey of a small shopping center. Despite this location, it is very quiet at night as the center closes quite early. It is located within a ten-minute walk to Chinatown, the waterfront, Little India, the Sarawak museum, and many great little restaurants. There are three rooms: two dorm bedrooms and a private double. No ensuite facilities. There are two washrooms/toilets in the common Asian style of "sink-shower-toilet-in-one-small-combo-room." There is no air conditioning but plenty of oscillating floor fans to use. Despite the lack of AC, my girlfriend and I slept very well. We were the only guests for three out of four nights so we could hog the fans.

But the best features of the Borneo Seahare are the owners/hosts, Wesley and Teresa. They are very, very nice and incredibly knowlwedgeable regarding many tourist sites in and around Kuching, as well as in other parts of Sarawak and, to a lesser degree, Sabah. This included national parks, tour operators, orangutan centers, advice on how to travel and stay safe in Borneo. They don't book trips for you. Rather, they are adept at pointing you in the right direction. They were great. Very kind and genuine people who we ended up talking to for a few hours some nights.

Keep in mind that this is a very basic place to stay. No frills, indeed. It's a very inexpensive place to sleep at night while you spend your days out and about exploring. The hosts are some of the best I have ever met. Simply fantastic.

We loved the Borneo Sea Hare Hostel because of the two managers who run the place. You have to book it using hostelworld.com because the managers have day jobs and need to plan for your arrival in advance. They stop by almost every night to make sure everything is in order, and they are so knowledgeable about the Kuching area. They won't make your travel plans for you, but they'll point you in the right direction and tell you how much to expect to pay for the different activities. Because they're not around much, the place feels like your own apartment (if you're lucky to be the only guests there like we were). The rooms are simple and come with fans. A kitchen is available for cooking, and as of right now there's a water cooler full of free water. There's also a computer available for internet. You log your hours on the notebook and leave what you owe at the end of your stay. If you're looking for a budget place to stay in Kuching, you can't beat the Sea Hare!

Wesley and Teresa were absolutely wonderful. Very helpful for giving advice about transportation, places to visit and they pointed us to some great places to eat! The hostel has a very relaxed atmosphere with a 24 hour breakfast on the table. We felt really at home during our stay here. Fantastic value for money.

a group of 10 of us stayed at this simple backpackers' dorm tucked away along a row of shophouses in Kuching.

it was affordable, homely and very comfortable. never mind that there's no air conditioning. Wesley was very accomodating and made us feel right at home. Would stay longer next time. :)
