Very dissapointed with our trip to Manukan Island, considering it is supposedly a part of the National Parks it is not very well conserved.

On our last trip we went on a cruise and snorkelled offshore and saw the most amazing array of marinelife and clear waters with undamaged coral.
We decided it would be great to spend the day at one of the islands just chilling out lying on the beach, and snorkelling. We went down to Jesselton Point and got a ferry out which was good value, 17rm per adult with an extra 3rm tax and then 10rm conservation fee when you get to the island. They run about every half hour.
You can hire snorkel gear on the jetty or the island, its 10rm each on the island and that gives you a life jacket as well if you want one.
There is basically no marinelife close to the beach, the coral has been destroyed by too many tourists standing on it. Also there are sea lice which sting you. To see anything you have to swim out quite a distance, too far for most kids to go. Really dissapointing.

The restaurant is shocking, the service is terrible they get alot of the orders wrong, deliver the wrong food to the wrong tables. We saw people complaining because they had ordered before others and were given their food late. My laksa was not a laksa at all but some sort of fishbroth soup which tasted terrible, but when I complained they tried to cover up by saying that was how they made it there. I refused to have it so finally they took it back. We got two meals, then had to wait 10 mins for the third and then another 30+ mins for the fish and chips. I would never recommend eating there.
They have the cheek to charge 90++rm for an average seafood bbq which looked overcooked and not fresh.

All in all this was not an enjoyable experience and I would not recommend it at all.

Manukan is beautiful and the accomodation Sutuera sanctuary lodges was really good. Nice little houses, very serviceminded staff and the beach great. The only drawback with the accomodation is that they have serious electrical problem daytime, some days we could not even use the toilett in our room between 10 am and 5 pm. Otherwise the hotel is fine, but it is a shame that there only is one restaurant on the island. And it is kind of expensive. Probably just cause they can, since the food is not that super. I would say ok but not great.

Manukan Island is beautiful and very worth a day trip. The snorkeling was some of the best I've ever seen. But don't bother spending the night on the island. The only accomodations are run by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. They are incredibly overpriced and the bathrooms are disgusting--at least they were in the Hilltop Lodge where we stayed. The toilet never flushed properly, we were without water on two occasions, the staff was inflexible in the booking process, and we were awakened at 7:30 a.m. to the loud noise of a water pump right outside our bedroom window one morning. Don't make the same mistake we did. Go there for the day and spend the night at the Seri Borneo Hotel in Kota Kinabalu.
