“Best Stay Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2011

We stayed at Le Meridien for 8 nights in September 2011 and absolutely loved it. It was our first time in Kota Kinabalu and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. We didn't wish to be stuck out in a resort far away from the city as we wanted to experience the culture and vibrancy of this waterfront city and this hotel was perfect. Right in the heart of the city overlooking the waterfront with plenty of eating places nearby. We were right above the Philipino markets which kept us entertained with all the hustle and bustle 24 hours a day. Sitting in our room watching all the fishing boats returning with their catch in the evenings and then seeing the sun sink into the sea was a real highlight. Very close to the hotel is Centrepoint Shopping Centre which is very handy for money changing, groceries, shopping and any other odds and ends. Inside the hotel it was luxurious and we were always treated like a special friend. The staff were fabulous. Checking in was a breeze (Very important after a 6.00am arrival) and the receptionist very sweet. Breakfast was magnificent, so much to choose from and the staff so welcoming and friendly. Our room was fabulous, the pool wonderful (especially after a day out touring) and all the staff were so accomodating and efficient. We must make a special comment about Joseph at the pool bar....he was just amazing at his job and Rodney who was always smiling and made us laugh every time we saw him. On our second last night we dined at the Flames Restaurant in the hotel and we were blown away. Not only was the food delicious, it was presented beautifully. It really was like a work of art and in our a opinion very reasonable considering the quality of the food. Checking out of the hotel was very sad, but like when we checked in very efficient and easy. We can thoroughly recommend this hotel and we had such a good time we intend returning to stay as soon as possible. Greg and Marg Smith. Western Australia

Well I must say responding to such a review would make any general manager feel good and does support the view of my children who believe I have the best job in the world....
We often work on Saturdays but after reading your review do I have to come in tomorrow or I better enjoy that long awaited round of golf...
Thank you for promoting KK and for recognizing the efforts of the team.

My review for this hotel is ambivalent.
Location is great; it is in middle of the city, at the sea, and only 15 minutes from the airport.
Value for money is also good.
Rooms are specious, well equipped and clean; however, they are old and tired, and not well maintained. It takes for the air condition at least 2 hours to cool the room to 24-25 Celsius, and will never really cool the room. The water stream in the shower is very slow, and the size bathrobe is good for a 12 year child.
Service is bad and slow. I left my room 6:00 in the morning, and returned at 1:00 PM to find that my room was still not cleaned. Even after calling housekeeping, it took them half an hour for a maid to come.
On the other hand, the service and courtesy of the executive lounge is great. They are friendly and will do anything they can to help. I find it difficult to explain the contrast between the hotel staff and the executive lounge staff.

Ambivalent indeed I cannot disagree with you. The malfunctioning airconditioning, water pressure and delay servicing of your room justify the low score you have indicated. My apologies for failing to deliver the facilities you were expecting from us.
Our maintenance program is definitely among our priorities and I can see we need to do more.
On the other hand is it reassuring to know that our team at the lounge is on top of things and delivered above expectations.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We are learning.

Alex

We stayed at Le Meridien, Kota Kinabalu for just the one day, but thoroughly enjoyed our time there, wishing we could have stayed longer. The hotel lives up to the 5* billing with spacious rooms and an outstandingly modern and clean bathroom.

The hotel, from the moment you enter, offers a spacious welcoming feel - beyond that you might ordinarily expect from a large chain hotel. The welcome at check-in was warm, despite our rucsacks and somewhat not-quite-5* look, but that's a compliment to the staff.

Located opposite the infamous night market, and with some rooms having an excellent view of the sunset, this hotel was perfectly located if you want to be downtown in KK. As such, it probably doesn't offer the range of outdoor facilities the more out of town resorts do, but it this hotel does still have an adequate swimming pool - from where you can see sunset or the night market. Additionally, the hotel is the right side of town for the taxi to get you to/from the airport - about 15 mins drive outside rush hour.

Minor point (as with all hotels of this ilk) wifi is free only in foyer.

My only regret is not being able to relax here for a longer period.

Room Tip: Grab a room at the front for sunset views and to catch the night market vibe.

Hello Stuart thank you for the thumbs up. More than a third of our guests are on holiday so definitely rucsacks, slippers and shorts are very much attires which we love to see coming into our lobby. What we offer to them is a resort destination holiday with an added taste to the local life.

alex

Our family stayed at this wonderful hotel for 8 nights over June/July 2011. From the moment we arrived we felt like royalty. The staff were so friendly and helpful and made us feel right at home. Each guest is made to feel as special as the next. We were totally blown away when we opened the doors to our rooms. We had lovely big rooms on the 9th floors with views overlooking and the South China Sea. It is definitely worth paying a little bit extra for the sea view rooms, not only to see the amazing sunsets, but also watching the night markets set up and break down each day and night. This had us captivated! The hotel is perfectly situated to experience and see everything in K-K. We walked everyone around the city, down to the jetty, to shopping centres and the markets. The local people are so very lovely and friendly and we felt very safe and welcome. We booked one of our tours through the hotel's tour guide desk, but also just took ourselves down to the jetty and organised our own trip over to Sapi Island for some snorkelling. The hotel food was amazing, however we found the dinner buffet a bit expensive for us every night and we also wanted to experience the market food and local cafes also. It is helpful to know when travelling with fussy eaters (ie. our kids) there is a shopping centre diagonally across behind the hotel that has McDonals and KFC. We cannot thank Alex and the wonderful staff enough for making our stay at K-K a very memorable family holiday. THANK YOU!!! PS. the meet and greet on a Wednesday afternoon at the pool is terrific!

Room Tip: Floor 9 was excellent overlooking the South China Sea

Great to have a review on Flames, KK's only real steak restaurant. I can see the big plate make the steak look very tiny however I can reassure you we are serving 220 grams portion from the a la carte selection. Set lunches are based on 150 grams only. If on the day you visited that this not happen please accept our apologies. Will be happy to have your next steak on the house when you visit again. Just ask for me.

Alex

This hotel located in the middle of Kota Kinabalu, right opposite to the night market.
There is the usual market smell outside the hotel as it is so close to the market.
The hotel is stock standard western hotel. Very good service.
We stayed here 1 night before the Mt Kinabalu climb and 1 night afterwards.
We stored our luggage in the hotel and the hotel organised an early in room breakfast (5:30am) for us. Very impressive. (see the photo)
When we returned to the hotel after the climb, we stayed in the Club room. The room deco is the same as the Deluxe room. Just with the access to the Club room which has afternoon tea, cocktail hours etc (free finger food and drinks). We also got late check out (3pm) which was great as we can't move much after the climb.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Meridien. The hotel was very well done up with huge rooms and a big bathroom with all the necessary amenities. The food was good as well although vegetarian choices weren't great and the buffet for lunch and dinner was quite expensive. I can't stress how good the location of the hotel is with the handicraft and fruit/vegetable market literally across the road, 2 malls next to the hotel and the biggest mall about 15 min walk away and the night market is also a short 10 min walk away. The staff was very courteous and welcoming. Overall, I would definitely stay at this hotel again especially because of the great location.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the sea thus a great view. The sunset was breathtaking.

Thank you for the thumbs up on your experience. Having an appropriate selection of vegetarian dishes is very important indeed and we will look into that with our culinary team.
