“Exceptional resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2014 via mobile

We spent 4 nights at the Rasa Ria, and it was fantastic, from the wonderful welcome to the caring and thoughtful leaving. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff - needs seemed to be anticipated.

The only downside were 2 poor meals- one of which was in the fine dining restaurant. Staff were very apologetic and did not charge for the items involved. However - we were disappointed, particularly with the fine dining restaurant.

The staff here did not just go the extra mile to make our stay wonderful, they went as far as they could ! We stayed for a few days before going to Sandakan and Turtle Island and then returned after our trip to enjoy being spoilt again. From the first moment of our warm welcome ritual, we felt cosseted . Our first room was very comfortable and the balcony faced the rainforest. When we returned, we could not believe our good fortune when we were upgraded to an ocean view suite, which was stunning! We also looked straight at the tree where the parrots and the hornbill feed, which was a bonus. Every member of staff, wherever you encounter them, greet each guest and all go out of their way to make you feel valued. The hotel is right on the beach and the grounds are beautiful . There is an orangutan sanctuary in the grounds, which is well worth visiting. There is a choice of restaurants each evening and the a la carte menu at the buffet restaurant is really good. The service there is exemplary and the staff always remembered where we preferred to sit, even after we had been away for a few days. When we left on our trip to Sandakan, we had a very early flight . We were provided with beautifully prepared breakfast boxes and 3 staff waved us away at 4.30 am! When we returned it was Chinese New Year and the hotel was incredibly busy. We were very impressed to hear from our waitress that at times of pressure, all members of staff, including all the senior management get fully involved in waiting at tables etc. She described working at Rasa Ria as like being part of a very supportive family - what a testimonial! We did not want to leave and we very much hope that one day we will return and just enjoy being spoilt there for decent length of time. A very special and memorable place to stay . Many hotels in which we have had the good fortune to stay have been in beautiful settings, with luxurious rooms but what makes Rasa Ria exceptional is the exemplary and caring service and the ability to make every guest feel treasured.

Room Tip: If we could afford a suite on the top floor next time, we would love it.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

Our family of 4 stayed in 2 interconnecting rooms for 5 nights in February. What can I say, it was such a wonderful holiday. We booked on a Scoopon deal for Garden View rooms, and were given Rooms 351 and 352 which had lovely ocean views as well. We loved the gong welcome and cool drinks on arrival. We arrived at 1.30 pm and our rooms were not ready till 3 pm so we were treated to a free lunch at the Coffee Terrace. Much has been written about the friendliness of the staff and the beautiful resort so I wont repeat this, but instead I will write a few points I would have liked to have known before going.

1. Happy hour at the Sampan Bar is actually Happy 3 hours! 4.30-7.30 pm, and I think there is another hour later at night. Drinks are half price , limited but very adequate menu. For example 4 or 5 different cocktails ( including Long Island Iced tea, Orang-Utang special - yum!!) are 14 MR, as are beers and wines . The musical string trio sing lovely songs at the Sampan Bar prior to the torch lighting ceremony around 6.30 pm which is fun to watch. A great place to relax in the evenings and watch the sunset prior to dinner.
2. Pool lovely and warm, and there are always some areas in the shade especially in the afternoons if you want to avoid the sun. Coconuts available for 12 or 14 MR poolside, they cut of the top and bring it with a straw and spoon -lovely. If you are relaxing on the loungers, the staff come around offering iced water and fruit from time to time. Sandfly lotion and sunscreen lotion available at the hut where you pick up pool towels.
3. Beach lovely to walk on early in morning, very firm and easy to walk on. There was a sign saying jellyfish warning, and we saw an occasional one when walking, but we did swim in the cordoned area with no problems. We also really enjoyed the kayaks which are free to hire for 1/2 hour and easy to paddle. They have single and double kayaks, once you get past the small waves breaking, the water is very calm and it is easy to paddle even if you don't have prior experience. They provide life vests for free too.
4. We ate at the Indian restaurant twice, excellent food. Good size serves. 3 main dishes and 3 serves of Naan was plenty for 4 of us. Chicken dishes and lobster masala wonderful . I booked the restaurant for my daughter's 18th birthday and the lovely staff came out with a cake and sang a lovely Happy Birthday song for her.
5. Coffee Terrace - we ate here on 3 nights, choosing from their a-la-carte menu. There is plenty of choice, Malaysian meals or more western choices, and prices were around 40 MR per person. Lovely entertainment from the string trio who will even come and serenade you at your table, and magicians who come and perform magic at your table whilst you are waiting for your meal. Lovely atmosphere, nice to sit outside in evenings. Inside a buffet was served each night, different theme , as with Tepi Laut, , cost was around 110 MR per person but we did not try the buffets. At Tepi Laut on 2 nights there was Malaysian entertainment. Breakfast buffet at Coffee Terrace was awesome- so much choice, Western, Japanese ( sushi, miso soup) , Chinese, Malaysian, Indian ( wonderful dahl and roti channai which they make fresh there), waffles, pancakes with choice of toppings, lovely breads and cheeses, and magnificent fruit including such sweet pawpaw. Great start to the day.
6. Daily entertainment. - the resort gym ( lovely) holds an exercise class every morning at 7.45 for an hour that is free. I attended Tai Chi ( bit slow for me) and Pilates ( loved this, great exercise). I also saw Dancersize offered. These are not well attended, in fact our Tai chi class had maybe 5 , and I was the only one who showed up for Pilates so I had a great one on one class. They also offer free cooking demonstrations 3 times a week at 3.30 pm. I attended the satay sauce class and the roti channai class. Both classes had only 4 of us turn up, but they were very entertaining, and we got to eat the dishes afterwards.
7. Orang-utang viewing- Awesome experience! They are so cute and love to perform. One of the highlights of our trip
8. Golf - my husband played every day and enjoyed the course. If you are staying at the hotel, it gets cheaper with each round you play. Free shuttle to take you to the golf course.
9. Lobby lounge, near reception, lovely relaxing place to sit after dinner and enjoy live music. You can have a drink if you want to or you can just relax and enjoy the music.
10. The staff are the real treasures of this resort. Everyone greets you with the right hand on the left chest and makes you feel at home. So lovely.

If you have the chance to go to this resort, please do take it. We all really enjoyed our time there and feel it is one of the best family holidays we have had.

Room Tip: rooms 351 and 352 are interconnecting and have good ocean views.

We stayed here for 4 days (however it was full of Chinese due to Chinese New Year - they are somewhat noisy and excubertant !!!) However, the room was excellent with a nice balcony and large bathroom with two seperate hand basins. The sunset ritual is worth seeing with dancers etc. and a glorious sunset. The 'street' is good for food and so is happy hour. The entertainment i.e. the bamboo pole dancing is awsome - how the guy avoids getting his feet trapped I'll never know. We also visited the Orang U Tan nursery, which is attached to the hotel and saw them being fed.You pay a few Ringits but well worth it. They also have a superb 18 hole golf course which is a 5 min walk away. My other half decided to have a bucket of balls since they have a practice golf range but a bit different to the UK. Balls are aimed at a pontoon in the middle of a lake. Chatted to the Aussie golf professional, who filled us in on useful info.
This is certainly a hotel we would consider re-visiting in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a free upgrade if possible. We stayed in the 'Garden Rooms" but the Coast Rooms, al...

Dear Eduelgar, thank you for your positive feedback. Happy to learn that you had an enjoyable golf experience with our golf professional, Aaron, and also liked the cultural performance at Tepi Laut restaurant – it has been very popular with our guests. Thank you again for staying with us and we look forward to your return visit!

stayed here for 8 nights after 6 nights touring sabah. the hotel is right on the beach so perfect to relax. swim in sea or lovely pool. rooms modern fresh and clean with big bath. breakfasts excellent, the other meals are charged price++, that is price plus tax & tip, out of 10 the service is 10++ and the friendlyness about 17. the meals are an extensive good quality buffett type plus top end a la carte ocean restaurant. by the end of the stay we were stuffed so my tip would be eat a la carte in the main buffet restaurant exellent quality good value (£40 -£55 all in including drinks per couple) and that fantastic service, go after 2030 if you wish to avoid the kids but they are not a problem. hotel has its own nature park and sanctuary so you will definitely see orang utans. night safari is also great, huge spiders to bear cats(not that frightening)

This resort is with out doubt a 9/10 place to visit

The staff are the most friendly and helpful people I have ever met!

It would of been a 10/10 if the beer was cheaper as it is WAY over priced for where it is.

The beech if fantastic, I was there for a week in February and there was never more than a dozen people on it.

If you like a ruby then then NAAN is the place to go. The curry was to die for!!

I would say that the activities etc caters for all ages and abilities, however, I personally wouldn't take my children there as I think it's more of an adult place to be.

Overall if your going to Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah you have to see this place, it honestly has got the WOW factor!
