We stayed at the Rasa Ria for three nights at the beginning of July and can't recommend it enough. Before we went, we read all the great reviews about the Ocean Wing on TripAdvisor, and thought it would be rude not to pay the extra - we weren't disappointed!!
We arrived at the Rasa Ria knackered and slightly grubby as we had been trekking in the rainforest in the Danum Valley - hence the splurge to upgrade to Ocean Wing. Our taxi driver took us to the main reception, where we rang the "gong" signalling our arrival and were greeted with cool flannels and a drink. When they realised we were staying in Ocean Wing, they arranged for a mini-bus to drive us 30 seconds down the road to their designated reception (we could have walked it with ease, but this just demonstrates their amazing service levels!!). The receptionist greeted us by name and took us to our top floor room.
As other reviewers have said, the Ocean Wing rooms are simply amazing. Huge comfortable bed (with a choice of turn down scents - of course!!), massive bathroom with electronic toilet (never did quite work that one out) but the best part was the huge balcony, overlooking the pool and the sea, with two sunlounges and a massive bath. They even did "bath menus" - where for a slightly extravagant sum of money they would run a bath for you at your desired time and date, even filling it up with rose petals and leaving you chocolate and champagne!! Very civilised!!
The other benefits of Ocean Wing are the pool just for the residents, which was quite (even when the Wing was fully booked, we still found a sunlounger without fighting for one!) and a stocked and staffed hut with free use of tanning oils, suncreams, books and games. There was also a designated bar which did drinks and snacks. In addition, breakfast was served in Coast which was quiet and relaxed, with four tables outside on the beach if you were lucky enough to arrive at the right time. Breakfast was incredible - with the biggest selection of help yourself buffet breaks foods I've ever seen as well as an a-la-carte menu where you could select from various cooked breakfasts.
We ate lunch at the Coffee Terrace which was nice and not too expensive, and at Naan one of the evenings which was tasty and fairly reasonable. Room service, albiet a bit on the pricey side, arrived quickly and tasted fab - they offered the same dishes as the Coffee Terrace.
We visited the on-site orangutang sanctuary which was well worth a visit - we'd been advised by the receptionist at Ocean Wing that mornings were quieter and I would highly recommend going at this time. We saw four babies who were obviously used to visitors and lapped up attention playing 'hide and seek' with the crowds!!
We did attempt to go horse riding (we tried at the main activities desk, who said they were full, but when we tried at Ocean Wing reception, funnily enough, they found some availability!! Very odd and a little uncomfortable for us!!) but the rain put a stop to that. We had a massage for £40 which was excellent and revived our aching muscles!! They also offered fun activities such as quad biking and waterskiing, but to be honest, we were so knackered we spent out time just chilling out by the pool and beach.
Finally, on the last night we had a private dinner at one of the three gazebos (we had booked months in advance and managed to get the largest one, with its own raised balcony and sunloungers). It had rained all day and we had been warned we may have had to eat inside, but luckily the rain stopped just 20 mins before we were booked in, and managed to hold off to give us the most amazing sunset. The cost was fairly steep (around £130) but we had a fab four course meal, with free champagne cocktails, our own private waiter and the use of the gazebo for four hours - it really was a once in a lifetime experience and was so, so romantic - I'd recommend it to anyone!!
The only downside of the trip was nothing to do with the Rasa Ria - Malaysians Airlines cancelled both our return flight with no notification or notice (luckily we paid for internet access whilst at the Rasa Ria and found out about our return flight) meaning that our final day was cut short by six hours as they put us on a very early morning flight - meaning we missed out on a relaxing morning and breakfast. However, the reception staff still were up, gave us a breakfast pack, and waved us off with smiles and energy you wouldn't expect at an ungodly hour!
Overall, I would highly, highly recommend this hotel. The staff are incredibly polite and service orientated - and if you can, spluge and go Ocean Wing - your bank balance might regret it, but you definately won't!!
