“Would have been better if check in was less tardy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

First impression was not good - first an unimpressive hotel frontage, and then a tardy check in. We arrived around 3.30pm and had to wait a while to be served at the reception desk. The party in front of us ( and there were like 6 of them) was asking the staff to show each of them how to log in their handphones to the wifi connection! I guess he had to choice but to oblige.

When we finally get served, we were told that the rooms have not been tidied and they could not tell how long we have to wait. We overhead other guests who were also checking in then being told the same. A lady guest (from mainland China) who had apparently waited for hours then came by and was also loudly complaining why her room was still not ready.

We were told that we will be contacted on our mobiles when the rooms are ready. Ok, we did not need the rooms yet so we went off for a bite around the area . By 5.30pm we decided to get back to the hotel to see what was going on. Oops the rooms were ready but there were no calls - the person who served us earlier was not there then. Perhaps she has forgotten what she promised? And I wonder why Housekeeping was short handed that day or is it a norm?

The saving grace was the staff were courteous and the rooms generally spacious, clean and quiet. Those sharing rooms and requiring some privacy for changing may want to note that the design of the rooms are a little cumbersome for this. You will need to pull the sliding panels back and forth. And there are no hooks around for you to hang your clothes. The wash basin fitted on top of the counter is a little ackward for shorter individuals and children.

The Malaysian buffet breakfast was a decent spread with also a variety of good breads and pastries.

Stayed here last week. Very good room and service especially if you are on the Club floor with room facing sea. The lounge on the 13th floor has superb view of the ocean with very cozy ambiance.

One thing you shouldn't miss when you are here is the local speciality called Oxtail Soup. It is really good. Avoid staying in the Atrium rooms.

from the outside the building looks pretty simple, nothing fancy. inside the hotel dinning area was nice, it has a high ceiling right to the roof (glass) so it can be quite warm during the day even though it air condition. rooms of average size, beds are clean and soft. bathrooms could do with a renovation seems old but still clean. water pressure is good with hot water. room service is not super fantastic but you are always entertained. view of city is cheaper than view of the sea. this hotel is great for family since i's literary 2 minutes work to the shopping mall mat be even less. getting taxi is close by with KFC and Burger king just across the road, so i would rate it high for location wise. the hotel food selection are not bad to from Asian, western to Japanese. the hotel has a pool and gym

We were impressed, the lobby was very grand and the check in staff friendly.

The rooms must have just been refurbished as they were exceptional and this was by far the best hotel we stayed in on our 3 week tour. Unfortunately the view from the room wasn't great, just buildings, but we weren't there to look out of the window.

We had the buffet on the first evening, which was accompanied by a pianist, it was lovely. We purchased a bottle of Cab sav which was 110 Mr - around £20 UK.

Breakfast was again buffett style and one of the best we'd had.

Complimentary wifi in the room plus a safe.

Hotel is situated on the waterfront near to the market so good location.

Pool overlooks the waterfront, we used it one morning, the one downside was that we had to walk through the dining area to access it, the staff sent us that way, and we could not see a back entrance to use.

Overall an excellent stay wish we could have stopped longer.

Room Tip: We were on the side overlooking shops and market - not a good view - ask for the waterfront if you c...

Dear BigMax123,

It gave us great pleasure to read your glowing remarks here at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit here in the beautiful city of Kota Kinabalu and are happy that we could contribute to making your Borneo experience a memorable one!

Thank you for your compliments on the rooms - we completed renovation on it some 3 years ago, incorporating a more Borneo ambience with wood and warm lighting. I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the view as much. Perhaps you can request a sea view room on your next visit!

We are also glad to hear you enjoyed the convenient location and food - we strive to provide our guests a variety of options, from local to classic western comfort food.

Your comments on the route to the pool have been noted and we will try our best to address this in our future plans. The route through the Atrium is by far the most direct and convenient but we understand your concerns.

Thank you once again for your kind comments and feedback and we dearly hope to welcome you back to the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu in the near future.

Warm Regards

We were staying in early December for 5 nights in two rooms.
The staff were extremely friendly. Room was tidy and clean.
Basically you can walk to every major tourist places in town.
The Chinese restaurant on site offered good food and very good service.
We were impressed.

Room Tip: try booking for a sea view room and even higher level.

Dear Barry K,

We are delighted to hear that you had a great stay with us here last month and experienced the Hyatt trademark of authentic hospitality!

We are also pleased to hear the positive feedback including the friendly service from our associates and clean rooms. We strive on the best for our guests and we are glad that you appreciated our efforts!

The hotel's location in the central business district has always been one of our major drawing points and we loved that you took advantage of it to walk and explore this beautiful nature city of Kota Kinabalu, including the views of the South China Sea which our sea-facing rooms offer.

Let me thank you once again on behalf of Hyatt Regency Kinabalu for your remarks and we very much look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Warm Regards

I enjoyed this hotel as an overnight location between flights. It is not immediately next to the airport but still a cheap $10 can ride away and one gets to taste some of the local culture. I strongly Recommend it as both a short and long stay location. The desk crew was helpful and the room service breakfast extensive and delicious.

From the website I admit I had fairly high expectations about the hyatt regency. As soon as I saw it I was disappointed. The exterior is dated. Issues checking in because our room was not ready so we were offered a complimentary lunch which was nice. My main issue was the room. We got a room which overlooked the interior of the hotel, and not just the internal of the hotel, the view was the of a dirty awning and filthy concrete floor. Off to the side we could kinda see out but essentially it was an ugly perspective, and we were unable to open the window to fresh air. On the positive staff seemed to be nice (mostly), rooms cleanish, close to town. I woudnt recommend it cos of the nasty room though

We are delighted that there were aspect of your stay here with us that you enjoyed - convenient location, good staff, and clean rooms, you e are deeply sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations with the room view.
