My wife and I stayed here on our 2nd stop on our Honeymoon. Were we stayed in the Mandarin Oriental in KL and went on to Tanjunt Rhu in Langkawi afther K.
Stayed in Tanjung wing. Beautiful room.
Hotel was well kept and clean.
Sunsets at the coco bar area is special.
Coco bar has some very nice food.
Arrival was very good we were met by a bubbly representative laugh and joking didn't make feel too informal. But, we then noticed this seemed to be a mixed in the staff some were very intuitive and wanted to have a chat. Others were very dismissive almost you didn't exist.
Beware of the sand flees on beaches here. My wife got a sand flee bite on her leg and got a horrible infection she had to go to the doctor and had to get her calf bandaged up. Although medical centre was very pleasant and friendly and we were dealt with very efficently.
I would diffentely NOT recommend eating at the chinese restaurant at the hotel.
I ordered Duck and my wife ordered chicken szechuan. Szechuan was okay at best and the duck although normally fatty meat was bland and tasteless. And staff appeared to be oblivious to the fact that a MOUSE was running around the restaurant floor. They should close this resaurant down and make something else out of it as it's terrible.
On the brighter side the Italian restaurant has very good food as do Coco bar as I mentioned.
Go on the 5 island tour it's a good day out and great food on this trip.
We flew to SANDAKAN to the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation center. This is a good day out but be prepared to get up and an ungodly time 5am. Although the day was long in parts it still was a good day out.
I would definitely come back here as we lost a day or 2 because of them darn sand fleas

I have also just read the review from someone who was unhappy with the Tanjung Aru, and I also felt compelled to write!

I have never been to such a top notch hotel, and my Husband who has been to many hotels in Asia agrees. The service was amazing, but best of all, it was genuine. We went at the beginning of september and never had a problem finding a sun bed, but I do remember staff saying that August had been extremely busy. Having said that - when we went to the Rasa Ria - they DID seem to have a small number of beds!

Our room was always spotless and cleaned twice a day, and as honeymooners the rose petals on our bed was a lovely touch!

Anyway, we saved the Italian restaurant in the hotel until our last night as a treat, and we certainly weren't disappointed. Yes, it is more expensive than the other restaurants in the hotel, but not expensive comparing to english prices.

A lot of couples stayed in the hotel to eat the whole time, but we went into town a lot and can recommend Little Italy for nice but dirt cheap stuff your face Italian. Don't expect nightclubs, and a touristy hustle bustle in the town though. We felt a bit out of our depth the first time we went in, but soon got used to where to go. The shopping malls are great and mega cheap too - shoes for £4!!

The colonial steam train excursion was lovely and a great experience but don't expect to find a craft market at the end of the line - it is all fake watches and flip flops. We did find some real gems of carvings and souvenirs in a shop in Centre Point though, but overall we were a bit disappointed with the lack of crafts, but on the other hand it was really refreshing to not get hassled and have to haggle every where you went.

If you go to Survivor Island - just be warned if you do the mud volcano pools! We did it and were told it was only a short run to the beach to wash off! Well, it took us 50 minutes to slip and slide our way through the jungle, getting scratched and bitten to b*ggery! We ended up at Rocky beach which as you can imagine , wasn't quite the white sands and deep water we had hoped for to wash off all the mud! Just make sure you take a plastic bag to put your clothes in, and some VERY GOOD walking shoes - not flip flops like me!!!

In summary - the hotel is amazing, the people who were unhappy must have been REALLy spoilt in KL, because we simply couldn't fault it!
