“Until there're new truly "5-star" hotels in KK, I'll not visit there anymore”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

Until there're new truly "5-star" hotels in KK, I'll not visit there anymore:

The breakfast buffet variety is just so so, average standard, staff's attitude is un-friendly and distant because it's too crowded (due to high residence rate all year round) and they're always busy with orders. Coffee is not good, when I ordered Chai on the menu, I said no sugar, but turned out it was super sweet. Unless you go very early for breakfast, I guarantee you that it'll take some time for you to find a comfortable place to sit.

The worst part is sleep quality. Hotel room is ok, big enough for solo travel, but the wall is not sound proof. I can clearly hear my neighbor's talking and WhatsApp sounds of their mobiles, this is ridiculous! If you want a sound, peaceful and quiet sleep, this is not the right place for sure, as early in the morning all sounds and noises will come in your ears, neighbors, kids outside in the yard and people walking by your door while they're talking…..

For the sunset bar, it's not as spectacular as expected, and again, too crowded, you'll have hard time finding a seat around and taking photos sunset time.

The only good memory is that it's queit and and very few people in the swimming pool at night, and the pool looks beautiful at night.

this resort is all you need for a great stay in Kota Kinabalu. the hotel is ok, althow the rooms are kind of o9ld. thee service is very good. the grounds are large and you can enjoy the golf area or the beach. the spa is very nice, they have thai chi in the morning, viewing the sea... the breakfast is very good, many choices, great service. on 1 side there is pontoon and rocky / on the other side beach with nice sand and a really nice bar with great sunset view. i recommend it for couples but also for families.
the main problem is the transport, to the next beach about 30 RM about 6 USD, to go in town about 6-7 USD and only by taxi. from th4e hotel the taxi is more expensive. we went to the mount Kinabalu by taxi for 300 RM 1 day trip. also for the fireflies 300 rm leaving 2 pm fro mthe hotel, coming back at 10pm. the mountain is great scenery and the fireflies are great, even if you don't travel with kids.

Room Tip: we had a west side room, view to the garden but ok

Arrival - took 45 mins to check in after some other Europeans decided not to queue properly aided by a member of staff (we are living in Japan at the moment so are used to orderly fair lines:) I had requested a high quiet floor two months prior to arrival but was given a ground floor. After kicking up a fuss (after a 35 min wait), I asked for the duty manager who found us interconnecxting rooms on the top floor. Phew.. Very nice Duty manager who apologied.

But tonight, ordered a Pizza Hut delivery and handed over 110 ringit but the driver fiddled with the money, and put 50 ringit down his trousers and then said we had only given him 60 ringit. Shame... BUT the locals must see us tourists and think we have so much money and take every opportunity. What goes around, comes around. The security guys were very good, checked the CCTV and said the body language was odd but couldn't get a view to see him put the money down his pants. Shame... Puts a dampener on your holiday. BUT what goes around, comes around.

Be careful guys - count your money out to people and check your change.

My husband went to the spa today and had what he said was the best massage in his life by Rosie.

Hope we have a good day tomorrow.

Room Tip: High room, away from pool area

Stayed for 10 nights and was surprised by the size of the room we were provided that was also baby friendly with a baby cot provided on request.

We were greated by friendly staff every day of our stay and were all very accomodating and approachable. Especially loved the sunsets at the Sunset bar and the beers and Long Island teas were always cold and appetising!

One of my favourite hotels!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room and not the pool view as it can get noisy.

The brand name Shangri-la creates expectations of luxury and superb services. The Tanjung Aru basically lives up to the Shangri-la brand with very good services one would expect from a 5-star hotel. The check-in and check-out are basically efficient although the check-in was a bit sluggish. The pool is well maintained and towels are clean. Health club is big and well equipped; very few guests used this wonderful facilities though during our stay. There is a well kept lounge next door where one can have sauna or simply relax with a cup of coffee/tea from the coffee machine for free.

Our room was a sea-view one in the Kinabalu wing. It was well appointed with all the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. However, the bathroom basin was partially blocked on day 2 of our stay (waste water kept coming back). I raised this issue on day 2 evening to the front desk. The staff member there promised to fix it that night but nothing happened up to the minute we checked out on day 4. This could be just a small incident but it has somehow tarnished the image of Shangri-la.

Overall, a pleasant hotel to stay in KK. But for those who would like to go to the city centre it's a 15-minute taxi ride (costs $30 ringgit) and take longer if there is traffic jam (which can be quite often).

Room Tip: Avoid the Tanjung wing near the pool if you want a quiet room. Kinabalu wing is a better choice.
