“Great place in SE Asia for a break with family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

A little expensive but great place for a week to relax. Lovely pool and water slides.
We will definitely go back again

Room Tip: Get a club room either hill or sea view

We stayed here for 9 nights & had a wonderful time. We stayed in the Kinabalu wing & found it to be nice & quiet with lovely views of the sea on the way to the room. Our room was large with a very comfy bed. The view from the balcony was of the building work which was a shame but that's the only negative.
We drank at the sunset bar a couple of times. The views are heavenly & the service pretty good too. Drinks are eyewateringly expensive - half a pint of lager was around £6 although they do a buy 1 get 1 free offer during happy hour.
We ate at the buffet restaurant once which was good & varied but not great value for money at around £28 each.
We also ate at coco joes a couple of times which again wasn't cheap but it was lovely. The setting was perfect, the food great & the service attentive & friendly.
We had room service a couple of times which turned out to be the best value way to eat. Everything we ordered was tasty & arrived within an hour
Breakfast was included in our package. The food was great & really varied but the buffet is a bit of a freeforall. There were people pushing & shoving around some of the buffet stations - particularly hot drinks & it seemed to be a competition to get the attention of the omelette chef. On two occasions we returned to our table to find it taken over by Japanese tourists who could not be bothered to wait to be seated & just plonked themselves into an empty chair. I'd recommend getting a table outside - much quieter
We booked a couple of trips through the onsite tour office. We booked at the table directly opposite the door & had mixed experiences.
The first trip we did was to Kinabalu park & the hot springs. The guide was terrible & tried to cut the trip short repeatedly. We had to argue with him to stick to the itinery of going to the botanical gardens which was the main thing we'd wanted to do. It was a shame because even though we finally got the trip we'd paid for we felt stressed & upset at having to fight for it.
Secondly we'd also booked the night firefly cruise. This was amazing & I can't recommend it enough. We cruised down the river & saw proboscis monkeys among other animals then headed back for a nice dinner. We then set back out again once it was dark & saw the most amazing firefly display. Well worth the money.
We went to see the orangutan sanctuary by taking the shuttle bus to rasa ria. This was fabulous, a really wonderful trip. You're encouraged to book this through the travel office which costs significantly more or you can just book the shuttle bus at reception then pay your entrance fee at the sanctuary.

plonked themselves into an empty chair.

We stayed for 1 night, out of curiosity at the end of a tour around Sabah. It is a superb hotel - "Resort" is a much better description. There are several pools, a beach - a small golf course - the list seems endless.
There is no doubt that this is a world class establishment, and a one-night stay cannot do it justice.

However, it comes at a price, and after a couple of weeks in Borneo, we decided not to dine at the hotel, but walk 10 minutes down to the outdoor food court. Not as glitzy as the Shangri-la, but the atmosphere was great, and the food terrific. After that we walked back to the hotel, and had one small drink each, listening to the live band, in the rather cheerless bar. The drinks cost far more than the dinner we had just eaten.
We did eat breakfast in the hotel - which was a huge & varied buffet. Again, this was truely world class.
We are glad we went to Shangri-La - it is a fine establishment. But I cannot help thinking that it represents questionable value and certainly did not provide the atmosphere of other accommodation & restaurants we found in Borneo.

Stayed here in May 2009,for a long weekend break (5 days) beautiful place, luxury hotel, golf courses nearby.
Visit the 'Philippino markets' - we took an inexpensive taxi,
did some other 'day- tours' too.
Would definitely return.
Also visited the other 'sister' Shangrila hotel too
There is a shuttle between them.
If you feel energetic you can always climb Mt. Kinabalu!!

My husband and i travelled from sydney Australia to Kota Kinabalu Sabah Borneo in March for his 50th Birthday. We stayed 7 nights at the shangri la Tanjung Aru. We stayed in a seaview room what an amazing view with a great size balcony to soak up the view. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is tasty with lots to choose from, my favourtie was the chang palace the best chinese food.Do yourself a favour have drinks at the sunset bar watching an awsome sunset, then dinner on the beach in one of the cabanas, it's very special. The massages are wonderful felt spoilt but did think it was a bit pricey.

Room Tip: I think the Kinabalu wing is the best with sea views

The overall package covering our 7 days at the resort gave us a good relaxing feeling on the completion. The resort covers for both the romantic couples or the busy family which needs a break from their busy lives.
The central pool is the main feature of the resort, covering an enormous area of differing types, covering for small children to the elderly. The activity are with 3 great slides, the BIG bucket and the water wars just makes more activities to undertake for all, and bring out the child in anyone. The pools have waterfalls in the deeper pool, and an infinity overflow which when seated on the centre island, looks like the water continues through into the ocean.
The small beach is well protected from any waves, and is also a protected netted cove. The water is refreshing but not clear.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious, well maintained and thoroughly clean. We had the luxury of a suite with a great balcony over viewing the pool are and harbour, a lounge to be seated relaxing looking out over the resort, and a jacuzzi bath which was an added luxury.
The resorts restaurants were all good, and a wide variety available for all tastes, especially for those fussy eaters of kids. Breakfast at Tatu Cafe was always plentiful and the kids had their own breakfast bar with a lot of choices, although all buffet style for the 3 meals. Peppino is the Italian restaurant which was impressive, and has a great balcony for that romantic dinner, and allows for a quiet moment away from the resort. There is also a Chinese restaurant at the southern end which is a lot more quieter.
The resort also has a spa called Chi, which for a true spoil, gave one of our afternoons a great finish. We had a 2 hour hot stone massage in one of the villas which was more than just extremely relaxing but a great experience.
Add in a garden tour, the pitch and putt golf greens, and the sunset bar, the resort caters for all.
We had some initial issues during check-in and our room allocation for connecting rooms, but this was sorted out eventually. We would come back gain, even if just as a single parent with the kids as the staff and kids club and activities allowed for some freedom for all.

Room Tip: Seaview room which will have a spectacular view of the sunsets over the ocean.

Arrived at the Tanjug Aru Saturday the 24th March and stayed 6 wonderful nights. Everything was just as you would expect from a Shangri-La, food and service was great under 12 yrs old was free for Breakfast and Dinner Buffett great value. We stayed in the Kinabalu Wing no complaints very quiet maybe the carpet was a little tired but not a big deal. Hotel to town is 15 MYR and the service was perfect everywhere we went. Concierge did not explain the Orang Utan sanctuary to us very well. Overall a very nice family vacation we would recommend this hotel and we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Unless you mind walking a bit opt for the Kinabalu Wing, much more cost effective, and very quiet. T...
