“Ok place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012 via mobile

A friend & I stayed here the other day & we had a pleasant enough time. The guest house is in a good area with lots of dining & shops around. The room was quite small but big just big enough to get both our packs in there so it wasn't a major issue. The staff are not unfriendly, just indifferent for the most part. They don't chat or show you around, you pay, get your key & find your own way. Do NOT book any tours with the "tour desk" the guy has half of an idea whats going on at best & the prices are exhorbitant! If you want to do anything in sandakan especially just book when you get there! As a side note, Borneo Backpackers across the street has a fantastic breakfast & Borneo white coffee, try it out :)

The thing that stands out the most and really made our experience was the helpful staff. We showed up with very little planned and within a day Putra had figured out a pretty epic itinerary that fit what we were looking for. He didn't send us on coach bus tours but rather small, intimate private experiences that really gave us a sense for Sabah. I highly recommend doing a longhouse trip as well - one of the highlights for sure!

Facilities are clean, location is really good and walking distance to all attractions.

As with any backpackers, standard things apply - no hot water, no secure lockers for our stuff, and bathrooms were outside the room. But for the $20 usd or so we paid for our private room, I think we found a gem!

Going to KK was my first out-of-the-country trip. What can I say? I DEFINITELY had a wonderful time and staying in Bunibon Lodge was a great part for it.

=============================================================
The Room:
Soft pillow, bed and blanket, spacious and air-conditioned room? Check!

The Lodge:
Breakfast is included and you can have it in their comfy lounge where you can hang out and just relax. WI-FI and a computer station? Check! Clean, hot shower, clean toilet and sink? Check! There's CCTV monitoring to keep everyone safe and secure.

Location:
Really, really convenient and accessible to the convenience stores, banks, Suriah Sabah shopping mall (its food court overlooks the bay and the sea) and the other malls, restaurants (where you should surely try out the local food), spas, market, city bus stops, the night life, the Jesselton Point ferry terminal and waterfront (go there early in the morning for a breathe of fresh sea air), and even the Signal Observatory Hill. The lodge is located along the Dewan street (formerly Australian place) where it's really quiet, safe and peaceful.

Service:
Regular housekeeping? Check! The receptionists are super-friendly, super-hospitable and super-helpful. It's just like talking with your sister or with your friend from another place and knowing the place through its people makes the whole travelling experience more meaningful.

TIP:
Their tour packages are a MUST-TRY. The tour guide is one of the hidden gems in the place, I tell you =) It's not just going to be a physical tour of the place. It's something that will really hit you in your soul and spirit. They will also show you really cheap yet mesmerizing places which you won't find in typical tour packages.
===========================================================

Will surely go back to this place and recommend it to my friends and to anyone who's "vacationing" in KK =)

Freekin great!!!!!!!! I stayed in the dorm room..Its a very unique place to stay. I love the fact that they have a disabled person (mute/deaf) guy working for them. There's definitely no discrimination there. I like learning sign language with him. Its clean and they have a huge outdoor lounge. its very cool at nite and its good for sunbathing in the day. free breakfast. free linen. free blanket. free wi-fi... free computer usage.... What more can u ask for? Unless you are a super cheap skate. ..maybe u can take some of the decorative flowers they have outside... LoL .. just kidding... Its in the very centre of the city and I was in 5 minutes walking distance to every location.. the bank.. food place... jesselton point ferry terminal(this is where u take the boat to the island)... sunday market.... fruit market...wet market ... handicraft market.. shopping mall. ..historical atkinson clock tower.. observation point... etc etc etc.. . phew! u name it they have it...

Room Tip: Ask stories about cheap skates visiting this backpackers hostel in the past.. they have millions...

first i stayed with a friend and we wanted to have a double room but they were full so we were about to leave that place but when we saw the chill out area we decided to take a dorm room instead and stayed for a couple of nights. after my friend left i went to mt kinabalu and came back to the same place because i liked it so much. the staff is really friendly and try to help wherever they can. the chill out area with tv/dvd (free) is really nice and you have wifi in the whole house. breakfast is also included but very simple (toast and different kinds of jam + tea). some members of the staff also showed us around kota kinabalu during the evening/night and we had a great time! they can show you really nice and very cheap places to eat and drink + party ;)

i can really recommend this place and would come back here!
