My husband and I have just returned from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. We stayed at the Gaya Centre Hotel which was very central. The staff were excellent, so friendly and helpful. The downside of this hotel was the condition of the carpet in the room. It was very badly stained, as was the upholstery on the furniture. The mould in the shower was also very bad. A little bit of elbow grease would have removed it I`m sure. Breakfast was average, but okay.
Restaurant tip:
The Upperstar cafe across the road from the hotel was very cheap, and very very busy at lunchtime.

Our first time in Kota kinabalu and chose Gaya Center as our main based hotel for this family holiday trip. Location is very convenient, centralized to, everything and the Suriah Sabah just a few steps away, with a grocery supermarket on the 3rd flr from which you can buy some stuff as gifts or pasalubong. Food is not a problem with various food stalls insidie the mall. Hotel has in room facilities are very good, cleanliness of room superb, size is adequate for us. Checkin and checkout are very smooth despite many guests arrival. Walking distance to almost all interesting places like jesselton, night market restaurant, etc...buffet breakfast is tasty and almost complete variation. Over all we like this Hotel very much,

Checked into the hotel and was immediately put off by the fact that I could not upgrade my room by paying the price difference of the rooms instead I was told that it was hotel policy to charge a minimum of $150.

Upon checking into my room... Where do I begin??? Horrible, filthy and just down right disappointing. Carpet was filthy to the point where you cannot bear to remove your shoes. The bathroom was ridden with mould. Bed sheets had hair stuck on it. This place is not a hotel and the price that they charge is just unreasonable for what you get.

Oh and you are not given two room cards. For an extra card, you will have to sign for it and if you lose it, they charge you 50 bucks.

Obviously I tried to ask for a refund but to no avail as it was booked through the net.

Do not stay here and avoid being bitterly disappointed. I know my holiday and impression of KK has been tarnished by this failure of an establishment. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Location : Near the sea, market, good location. RM30 from airport, within 30min drive!
Room : VERY dirty carpet, cup, and tea/coffee container, the room door... should be repainted! The rest is OK! Comfortable bed!
Staff : Friendly, polite, I askes for extra towel, soap, internet cable, they sent over within few minutes.
Breakfast : Good breakfast, GREAT sea view from the dining room!
Remarks : A LOT of Chinese tourist stay in this hotel! The TV is with Taiwanese channel!

Room Tip: Ask for sea view room.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay in Kota Kinabalu. The hotel while a little tired aesthetically was clean and safe. All staff provided good and attentive service which made our stay. The room, a deluxe on the 9th floor, while a touch small was in the main clean and the beds comfortable. There was a little mould in the shower alcove but had no impact on our stay. The deluxe room had terrific views of the harbour. The breakfast provided in our package was of good quality, something that couldn't be said for the coffee (that can be subjective argument), and plentiful.

The hotel is what it is a budget hotel in the centre of town ?? that supplies a reasonable sized room at a reasonable cost. If you want luxury pay more money but the location would be difficult to match or beat

We went to KK this month. Me and 3 of my friends, we are four girls. We booked full board package and has choose to stay at GCH. We got 2 rooms for 4 nights in KK. This hotel has a very convenient location, which is surrounded by banks, shops, restaurants. It is just 10 minutes walks to Suria Sabah (Shopping Mall). From here to Mari-Mari cultural village will be around 1 and half hours. There are many fast foods and bakery nearby. Thus there is no problem for food, even there is one 24 hours KFC. Moreover, there are around 20 travel agencies nearby. So, if tourists who did not pre book any tours, do not worry about it, because here you can find so many travel agencies. Even there is one inside the hotel. Also, there are many taxi nearby, if in case the hotel guests wanted to go anywhere, it is very easy to get a taxi here but as usual it is a bit expensive. For example, from the Hotel to Filipino Market, they charge RM 12.
Now, lets talk about the hotel, we got 12th floor and usually the breakfast is at 4th floor from 6am to 10am. The special thing about the restaurant where they serve the breakfast is, the view of the sea. Guests can choose to sit outdoor in order to view the beautiful South China Sea or they can choose indoor as well. For Vegetarians, no worries, the breakfast has salads, fruits, plain porridge, plain vegetable soup and etc. About the rooms, it has almost all kind of amenities, such as iron board, iron, coffee & tea making facilities, hair dyer, safety box and hot water for drink and shower. It is quite comfortable room with bathroom, TV (which has fox movies), 2 single beds, chairs and tables. The service that was provided at the Hotel was great. The Hotel Staff was very friendly with a smile face. Everyday our room was cleaned whenever we hang the signage which was asked the staff to clean. A very good hotel to stay with much facilities. If you have any idea to visit KK, this Hotel can be considered. So, have a pleasant journey to KK :)

We were 3 adults and stayed one night in a studio suite after climbing Mount Kinabalu. The large and comfortable beds were very welcome for our tired legs. We were on the 3rd floor and the room was well insulated against the outdoor noise.
The hotel is well located at the end of Kota Kinabalu seaside walk, right next to the outdoor seafood stalls and a few minutes walk to the wet market or to some good main street restaurants. It is also conveniently located in front of a new shopping mall.
The breakfast was fairly good with varied food and offered a nice terrace overlooking the harbour.
Since we drove, the staff offered us to park right in front of the hotel for RM10 a night which was well appreciated.
All in all a nice haven of comfort right after the hardship of the climb. I would recommend this hotel to any mount kinabalu climber.

Room Tip: If you are more than 2, the junior suites offer one of the best value of Kinabalu, rather than takin...
