“Great location, works if you are on a budget”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

I typically stay at City Park Lodge on my trips to Kota Kinabalu, usually because I am on a budget. The owner and staff are always friendly and can arrange for airport transfer at a nominal fee if you request it. The most important thing here is however the location. You are minutes away (walking distance) from everything, whether it is to the Jesselton Jetty for the islands, or great seafood, the supermarket etc. The weekend market is just downstairs at the back. The rooms are however pretty small, if you've been to Japan business hotels, yups, that's about the size. The place is great for singles or couples on a budget backpacking trip. The lounge area has a PC, there is cable and of course Internet.

I don't recommend this place for families with babies as there is no place for a crib, with just enough space for small pieces of luggage. However, yes, there is no lift. So if you have the pleasure (or not) of staying at the top floor, well, I practically climbed up on my hands and knees after a day at the beach. I can imagine after a climb up and down Kinabalu, this is probably not exactly the most enjoyable way to get back to your bed. No tubs, just shower, but great with hot water.

I just booked a Twin Private room for me and my colleague for a short vacation on Oct 31 to Nov 5. May I know how long will it take from the airport to this hotel? What is the mode of transportation and how much is the fare?

Stayed here for 4 nights, the hotel rooms are clean and the location are near to everything (jetty to islands, gaya market, eateries). very good wifi connection and free pc usage.

but there is no lift in the hotel, so as others mentioned, climbing stairs up to 3rd floor is not an easy task. luckily i got the room at 1st n 2nd floor. The noise of club nearby only till 1am, so its not a big problem for me but for those who are very easy to be waken up, think twice as the wall of the room quite thin.

there is also free water and microwave, fridge for use. The receptionist and cleaners are friendly though.

Overall i am really satisfied with the hotel and the price is the main reason (RM110 for 4 and RM60 for 2), will come back again for sure.

Room Tip: Room 202 or room 203

I stayed a nite after our climb up Mt Kinabalu.. The room was clean and fairly comfy for a great nite rest.. Location is great.. It was a street away from the Sunday Market at Gaya Street, Lots of coffee shops for food.. I was in a lounge for a short while - had a PC where I could access my email and social network.. Hot water and coffee available. Was most impressed with the attentiveness of the "uncle" or perhaps the boss at reception.. He noticed who went in/up and out/down of the hotel.. So feels like a safe place to stay.. The lodge also has luggage storage where I had used it to store items that was not needed for the trek.

Room Tip: This is a walk-up hotel.. Not advisable if you have difficulties climbing up or down..

Good things about staying here :
- The air conditioning at Room 403 (Queen bed with window) was very powerful. It chilled the room within a jiffy!
- The hot shower was blissful. It was very powerful, as good as a body massage but could be quite pain. The temperature control was great as I couldn't tolerate much heat while my another half could.
- The boss is very friendly and helpful. There was once we checked out to change our stay to Le Meridien for two nights and he extended our check out time to 2pm. That was very considerate of him.
- You are allowed to pay after you stay.
- You are allowed to deposit your valuable with the lodge.
- You are allowed to deposit your luggages with the lodge in their store rooms.

Bad things about staying here :
- The bedding, perhaps, had dusty smell on it but it was tolerable.
- The space of walking was very limited. We carried two luggages weighing around 25kg and I had to jump over when I needed to go toilet or go out.
- The reception floor has no air conditioning. Imagine checking in and out in the afternoons.
- There was no lift or help given to carry our luggages. Imagine carrying 25kg luggages up 3 floors! My another half felt like dying especially after our climb of Mount Kinabalu and both of us were suffering from body ache.
- There was this old lady in charge of the counter couldn't hear properly and being adamant about registering my name and details even though I offered to write it myself (which the previous guy in charge of the counter did). Annoying much.
- Room 203 (Queen bed without window) air conditioning wasn't working fast enough. It took perhaps 5 times of the time to chill Room 403.

Room Tip: Ensure the air conditioning is power enough, the heater is hot and strong, the bed does not smell fu...

The location was great.
The price was cheap.

The room was really really small. It was just enough for 2 twin beds, which were placed very close to each other. No other furniture in the room, and with our luggage having no place to put in, there was barely enough room for us to walk.

Toilet was clean. Shower only. There was hot water.

After I had fallen asleep, I thought someone was trying to open the door which I already blocked with our luggage. When I got to the door, the door was closed, but I could swear the luggage was not "touching" the door as I placed it before I went to bed.

But the rest of the night went uneventful.

We just spent the night there to fly to Semporna the next day, so that was ok.
But if I come back to Kota Kinabalu again to explore the west side of Sabah, I will not stay in that lodge.

I don't need luxurious hotel, but I need space to unpack my luggage and feel not suffocated.

The staff is friendly. There is a provision of food you can use for a breakfast. Rooms are small, but clean. Stairs are steep, no lifts, a bit uncomfortable with heavy luggage.
The organization of events by the hotel (rafting, Mt Kinabalu) was ok.
