“Beautiful spot, great resort and accommodating hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

We stayed at the Mesilau Resort for the Sabah Adventure Challenge. The resort staff were excellent hosts for us for this event. I am vegetarian, and was a little worried on the first night I might not have the right food - they prepared something especially for me. The resort is in a beautiful setting, and with comfortable facilities. Very friendly and welcoming staff.

Lovely place with great view of the mountain peak. Have the steamboat for dinner as compared to the buffet as its warm and nice. Have a raincoat on standby as if it rains, the entire walkway is not covered 100 %.

I have attended 3days seminar together with my wife at Mesilau Nature Resort. Journey to the resort is bit rough, bumpy and winding and it was such a long journey from Kota Kinabalu. This was our second visit to the resort in the 5 years period. Surrounded by the forest trees and you can feel the fresh air everywhere. Very cold at night time and you need to on the heather to overcome the cold temperature. Food is very simple and not many choices. The staffs are very friendly.

Mesilau Resort is operated by the Sutera Harbour resort and have a restaurant that serve both local and western food. Do note that food is not great for it's value for money!

But the view of Mt. Kinabalu is just stunning and magnific from here at 2000 meter. It's worth visiting Mesilau even if you are not climbing the mountain. Note that this is the new route for the Mt. Kinabalu climb - 8 km further up! Take note too that if you are driving up to Mesilau it's quite a drive in from the Kundasang township and a distance away from Kundasang if you are thinking of driving out for the evening. The temperature here drop during the late evening down to 17 degree celsius and it's good to carry a windbreaker for the evening walk to the restaurant. We stayed here in mid December 2012 and went back for a day visit in mid January in pouring rain and couldn't see the mountain at all. But was pleased to see the rafflesia flower blooming on route to the hot spring. All in all we had a great time

We booked the Mesilau Nature Resort for the stay before climb to Laban Rata.

The dorm rooms / twin rooms were booked and overall it is pretty good. The dorm room as expected is not hotel-type accommodation. But it has sufficient requirements for sleep, shower and toilet. There is a living area and kitchen available. The twin room is slightly better, it provides private bathroom and has a heater. The living room is shared. If you want to have a comfortable stay - use the twin room. Highly recommended.

The environment is cool and nice. The food provided is delicious (probably because of the MSG). For a stopover or holiday I think it's pretty decent. However, I did the Mesilau Trail, it is physically demanding and not recommended for first timers if you're not an avid climber. Also, the trail is quite slippery and rocky (not much stairs) during wet season. A lot of requirements to do this climb and please do your homework. The resort seems to market this climb as do-able, but I disagree. There are some percautions that needs to be taken into account.

An awesome resort by the foothills of Mt.Kinabalu, Sabah.
The weather was so cool and chill, the dinner came in a form of steamboat which was just the right tonic for the night.
Good nite sleep before the tough mt.kinabalu climb.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

Our expectations were pretty low... we were blow away by this place... much higher quality than I was expecting for a group G Adventures trip.

We stayed in the Crocker lodges (I think) - three bed lodges. Comfy beds, beautiful front deck and even slippers and toiletries! All with the mountain looming large (we were climbing it the next day). The power was only switched on at 5pm but that was fine and so long as you have the water heater on long enough there was hot water.

The restaurant was also excellent although the beers were overpriced... best not to bother drinking. Food all good - buffet style suited us well and a massive breakfast and pack up lunch for the climb was just right!

Even if you weren't climbing the mountain this would be a perfect spot to stay.
