It is a good place for you to recharge after a few hours hike. The dorm that I stayed contains two double decker beds which can accommodate four people. The temperature is around 10 degree celsius, wear warm clothes as no heater is provided in the room. Hot water is not available but kettle is provided, can boil water for shower. Meals provided were nice and many choices.

I have to agreed with reviews/comments made from metastasi, CarleeBrisbane and losrobos.

Laban Rat (LR) is a pitstop rest for travellers& guide after a hard day hike. ( It is NOT a hotel) To expect this hut to give you five star services is preposterous. So just think of it as a hostel on top of a mountain. My wife and I stayed overnight at LR after the Kinabalu hike. Observations and comments for benefit of future travellers are as below
1) On clear skies and good weather condition, the view of the summit, LR waterfall and to the bottom of the summit was magnificent. We were lucky we got the chance to see those in the evening and early morning before the change of weather.
2) Because I sign up the package thru the Kinabalu Park Lodges (2 months in advance), the arrangement include accommodation and meals at LR – meals covered are Dinner upon arrival to LR, supper at LR before the climb and breakfast at LR after you climb.
3) Rental of sleeping bag, head lights and wind breaker were available at LR. (supliies may be limited)
4) We arrived late at Laban Rata (730pm). Thank to some co-ordination, I am pleased that the staff at LR managed to pack dinner for us (rice with boiled egg ,vege and curry) as the restaurant closes at 7pm.
5) Rooms are based on hostel arrangement with at least 2 or more bunk beds in a room. Space is a bit tight. No cupboards. So you have to be mindful of your belongings.
6) Lights out at 830pm onwards with a reminder to visitor to keep it quiet at 9pm onwards
7) Shower and Toilets well maintained. There are issues with local works minister on the electricity supply thus it is unable to supply adequate power for hot water.
8) Food variety is limited but edible and scrumptious to me esp. after a hard day climb.
9) Still able to received telephone reception while in LR
10) Found a Staff which was particularly attentive. During the mass climb at early dawn, there were some climbers who left their bedroom doors open which was somewhat CARELESS. To prevent unwanted incident, the staff who did his rounds just closed the door and locked it.

This is my second trip here. What can i say. Its a unique hotel. No walk inn & no butler or conceige. Need to book months in advance & the location at the highest in the region.

The place offer breathtaking views which no other place can bet in the region. The place is quite cold. The view of the surrounding was priceless.

There are several choices of Dorm, VIP room & 2 beds (need to book - higher price compared to others). I stayed in 3 double Decker bed with own bathroom & shower (Buttercup 3). The room is at the Ground floor. Same floor as the dining area (the only room). Hot shower was unpredictable. It rans out fast. They provide us with clean towel & also soap/shampoo. The room even have a heater. But one thing for sure its quite hot if you sleep on the upper bed. Dorm in upper level need to share toilet & bathrooms.

How to get the a good room was simple. Make sure you're among the 1st to arrive in Laban Rata. Slow talk with the reception to get a good room. We arrive around 12.30am. So we have ample time to negotiate a good room.

Dinner time, breakfast & supper time was quite tricky. Dinner starts at 4:30 pm. There's another supper at 2:00 a.m. The food was ok 4/5. But there's not enough room to sit & eat. They should have increase the number of tables & chairs around. I've tried Fried Rice both kampung & chinese style. I recommend the Kampung style.

Pro's : Lovely view. Dont be lazy to walk around taking pictures. Lots of nice views out there.

Con's : Water supply unstable. If you take a bath late you'll be left with cold water.

Tips :- Take shower as soon as possible. Because hot water is limited.

Room Tip: Take the ground floor. (only one room with own bathroom & toilet)

Most of the hikers will stop at Laban Rata to rest before continue their journey to the summit. It's a hostel with bunk beds. It took about 5 hours journey from Timpohon Gate to Laban Rata. Quite a challenging track for the beginners. The temperature is low, so bring thick clothes to warm your body. Wonderful view from the mountain and fresh air.

Compared to the facilities on other mountain treks I have done Laban Rata was a real treat.

Keeping in mind that the place has no road access and *everything* has to be walked up the 8k track with a 1400 meter climb by porters then they do very well.

We were in a private room which was better than most we have stayed in on our trip around Malaysia. We had access to power points, hot water and were provided with towels. Also if you have a Celcom simcard you get strong mobile coverage.

The food was excellent with a great evening buffet and a filling breakfast. The resteraunt had a great atmosphere and people were very friendly.

Since its the only place on the way to the summit, unfortunately no other choice Dorms - dirty, small, very cold. Water is freezing. Walls are thin, noisy. Provide bedsheets and towels. Have keetles and cups in the kitchen. Toilets and showers are pretty clean.
Restorant - with an amazing view, decent buffet and good choice of hot drinks.
