“Decent hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012 via mobile

For a hostel, it's pretty good. We had a double room with air co, and we were very comfortable. The bathroom on our floor didn't work, so we had to use the one downstairs, but it was fine since the place was not busy.
You pay extra if you want a blanket or extra towels, but this was never told to me during the booking process. I don't like when places spring extra charges on.

Service was lacking. It was the same guy for most of our two nights there, and he barely spoke English. He could not answer basic questions about public transportation.

Also, before arrival, I was emailing regarding tours, and they said to speak to a certain individual when I checked in, but he was nowhere to be found. Front desk staff said, he'll be here in 10 mins, so we went and settled in to the room. When we came back 15-20 mins later, the front desk staff said another 20mins. I was disappointed, as that was why I emailed ahead. We ended up figuring everything out on our own.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

I first stepped into Borneo Beachouse years back and have been back there almost every single time i have been in KK (definately more than 30 times in the past 6 years and always for leisure).
Of coz if you like the comforts and services of a 5star hotel with a bell boy to carry your bags for you and 24hr room service, there are loads of those in the city. But there has always been something very special about this place that sets it apart from the rest. If you are like me who always love being on an adventure and yet would like a nice comfortable bed in a homely environment to stay in, and a place to simply chill out with new friends, then this definately is it.

I would rate it's location as one of the best i have found in KK, and it has absolutely nothing to do with being conveniently close to the airport. It is located comfortably out of the congested city (just a short bus ride from the door step takes you into town). The best part i like about this place is that it is just a 5 minute walk to Tanjung Aru Beach, where i dare say has one of the most beautiful sunsets ever!! It is also a place where local families like to hang out over the weekends and there is a food centre which opens late into the night with really cheap, good local food. And right next to Borneo Beachouse is also the newly open Perdana Park, which is definately the nicest city park in KK.

Staff at the Beachouse have always been warm and friendly. Always ready to make your stay in Sabah a more pleasant and memorable one. For those who have rented a car like i did this time there is parking available within the compound. Overall the place is not too noisy even being just opp the airport, and neither is it too quiet, i would say it is a really comfortable place and i have always had the best night's rest here. We took an air-con twin room in the building in the back this time and i would really recommend it.

Another thing i like about this place is that the Beachouse offers value for money day tours to many places of interest in KK/Sabah which are reasonably priced compared to the bigger commercialized tour companies one would find in the city.

All in all, being in the capital city of Sabah, Borneo Beachouse is definately a comfortable, relaxing and stress-free place to be and they do make an effort to make it so. Thumbs up and thanks loads!!

Room Tip: The Air-con Twin room in the 2nd building is nice and huge! It is also conveniently located just opp...

So, very close to the airport which after a long plane ride is a good thing. We were greeted by some friendly guys, maybe a bit too friendly.... The accomodation was ok except we had paid for our own bathroom and the bath/shower didnt work which is a bit crap when you have been travelling for 2 days! The price we thought was good but as we travelled through Sabah we seemed to be getting much better accomodation for the same price. We did have fun though :)

This place is only good if you want to walk from Terminal 2 (air asia terminal)... and are staying just one night in KK before flying out again. Otherwise stay elsewhere. Its still a long way from Terminal 1 so go elsewhere if that's where you land.

The main staff at this place were two young guys and they seemed like fun, but only if they had no problems... they liked to have a laugh, but they were more like other guests at the hostel.. zero customer service when it came to actually doing their job.

Their laundry ''service'' ruined one of our tshirts and lost another. They took no responsibility for either and the rest of the clothes were still soaking wet a day and a half later when we had to check out, despite promises that it would be all done on the day we put it in. I complained, to their dismay and the best they did was to offer 5MYR back from the 30 that we paid for the laundry. All our clothes had to be washed again at the next place, to our cost again.

We stayed twice and the second time we did they tried to charge me more than the rate I booked for. I realised later and queried it; he said he got confused by the booking and then he checked his emails... so rather than check to clarify in the first place he just thought to charge me some extra rate and hope I wouldn't notice.

Other simple things like the double room smelling really bad, the toilets hardly ever having toilet paper, one shower room not having a working light.

I would not recommend the place unless you land and fly out of Terminal 2 and just need one night. Otherwise check out places further into KK, I heard from several people that Borneo Backpackers was a nice place.

Enjoyed my stay over here! Rooms are clean and some with airconditionig. After 6pm ask for mr. Cobra and mr. Cool, because they are there to entertain you during the evening. They organize trips as well, great place to stay when you're in Kota Kinabalu.

We stayed here for 2 nights. 1 day to spare for Tanjung Aru and we are leaving by flight the next day. The hostel is walking distance to the beach, 10 minutes walk to Terminal 2, KKIA. The people are helpful. The room is spacious.
Con:
The floor is sticky.
WiFi is only available at the lobby/reception counter.
No free drinking water is provided like other lodge, why would they called it "home away from home"?
