“Not Grand but Old Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013

I understand this hotel was given a 3stars but in my opinion, it does not worth half a star. Located in a good place right in the heart of Penang Island.

Reception & Lobby:
Lobby is dark and no proper waiting area.
I make a call to the receptionist to confirm my reservation but they failed to give me an answer and none of them bother to call me back regarding the matter. My check in was greeted with no hot water because the hot water was down for service.

Room:
The bed & pillows were ok but the room really looks old and tired. Maybe the room need a new coat of paint.

Bathroom:
No bath towels and hand towels. The bathroom is always wet due to the water leaking from the toilet bowl. Call for housekeeping for towels and they need 10minute delivery.

Swimming Area:
It suppose to open at 9:00am but it was locked from the outside, waited half and hour. Finally call the reception, they say the the pool is in cleaning progress, wondering who is cleaning when the door is locked from outside and the pool area is located at the rooftop. Later, the staff who look like just woke up bring in the key to open the door. The pool area is like a store room or junk yard. They is no staff to attend and no pool towel. Again, I have to make a call for towels, and they just bring in 2 towels as requested, the rest of the guests was really puzzle.

Breakfast:
Sad breakfast.. eg. simple nasi lemak with hard rice. Tasteless coffee and tea. I recommend anyone to just walk across the hotel for the tasty roti canai and milky teh tarik.

Hotel lift:
Be careful while using the lift. The sensor is spoil, so the door can just shut. The hotel already put up the notice, guess if anything happen, the hotel already pre warned the guests.

Hotel parking:
Dark and dirty. Poor maintenance.

Penang Island is a good place for vacation, just dont spoil your holiday by checking into this hotel.Visit Malaysia is coming, dear Continental Hotel's manager, please do something.

Stayed for 1 night for business trip. As well known hotel brand i'm not worried about the hotel when make a reservation.

But when enter the receptions, staff don't have standard uniform not friendly. facilities are aging, room have old furniture and carpet are dusty. AC not maintained and noisy. i have to request towel because its not ready in the room.

I don't mind if this is budget hotel but seem like Grand Continental are not maintained their standard anymore. i would prefer boutique hotel on my next trip.

First of all, this hotel must not be confused with another one with very similar name but better rating. I don't mind old hotels as long as they are clean and well maintained. But not this one. From the car park to the lobby and corridors are not well-lit. And yes, the elevator is dangerous. Stained beddings and mouldy pillows. Air conditioning was not working as well as expected, resulting in poor quality of sleep. The hot water was co-incidentally not functioning. There are much better alternatives around the area with the same amount of money, or even less.

Elevators - not safe
Centralized Aircond - overall bad
Staff - Average friendly but lied about the hot water.
Food/Breakfast - moderate
Room Safety/Window - No safety lock
Doors locks - no further comment, they just need to change to keycard.

No cab or airport transfer. No cab is willing to pick up from to anywhere.

For all that as a fellow hotelier, i'd say rm120/- a night is a fair price NOT rm250/-

I was so shocked at the Maintenance and House Keeping standards and rude behaviour of staff and Manager of Grand Continental Hotel, Penang that I have vowed never to stay at Grand Hotels ever again anywhere in the world.

I , along with my wife, stayed at the Hotel on 14 Sep 2013 night. The room allotted to us had not been cleaned and there was a used paper napkin lying next to the bed.
The Electric Kettle was not working.
There were NO towels in the bathroom.

We called up reception and they immediately sent two Bath towels. However, I requested them to provide us a hand towel since the two of us generally use a separate towel for bath and for toilet purposes. This was surprisingly turned down. We were not given even one extra bath towel.

No action was taken to replace/repair the Tea Kettle for TWO HOURS. Reception advised us to contact House Keeping for this but on calling up House Keeping, no one attended our calls.

Finally, I went down to the reception personally and asked for the supervisor. The supervisor came in and stated that 80 % kettles in the hotel were not working and they had no replacement thus. When I suggested that the problem may be with the socket and not necessarily the kettle, which should be checked, they said the electric complaints take 2-3 hrs to be resolved. I asked for connecting me to the HOTEL MANAGER since it being a Saturday, the Admin Offices were closed. SHOCKINGLY, the supervisor pointed a finger at a man sitting in the lobby on the "Massage Chair" and said he is THE MANAGER.

When I approached the MANAGER ( Mr David Ho, as I was told) he showed no courtesy and sitting in the massage chair waiving a hand asked me what was the fuss all about. I said " you have been seeing the commotion all this while, then dont you think its your duty to intervene and resolve the issue". He told me there were plenty issues like that everyday and he is not expected to intervene. He repeated the same answers to my problems and said it is known to every one in the hierarchy and I can complain to anyone, if I wanted.

At about 8PM the electrician arrived and found that the kettle was OK but socket was not working. So he disconnected the TV from its socket and connected the Kettle in that to provide me a solution. He also declared that the entire row/group of sockets was un-serviceable so I should use only the serviceable (One) socket in the room.

It was also shocking to know that the hotel didnt have any converter plugs for using Indian type plugs into the Flat Pin sockets in Malaysia. I finally walked down to the nearby Mall to buy one. Incidentally these converter plugs were readily available to guests in Citrus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur by the hotel. The hotel must cater for flat pin convertor for electric gadgets of International Visitors since different countries have diffrent types of plug points/sockets.

Room Tip: Service Poor. Staff Rude. Attitudanal Deficiency.
