Staying at Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is exactly how I wanted my mother and siblings (total 9) to experience. It was indeed a real life time traveling machine.

The Mansion took us back to old Singapore where our Aunt used to lived(near MacRitchie Reservoir). We were literally transported to our childhood. Even my mother of 75 felt young all over again. The Blue Mansion is beautiful without saying. What I want to mention is the manager Poh Seow. Who went beyond his duty to make sure my family had a great time. He arranged for a surprise birthday cake for our mum's 75th and even took my family to the best Durians in town (no, we did not eat in the room). Poh, the manager, who constantly checked on every guest, making sure they were taken care of and at the same time, catered to our family of 9 needs. He definitely make our stay extremely pleasant and memorable. Thank you once again for your amazing attention, Poh.

with best regards,
The Yeo's family

Room Tip: The duplex (Escoy) is great for family.

I stayed here a couple of times in the late spring of 2007, first with my sister and later with my wife. We paid about US$55/night and I thought it was good value. Rooms now go for $136 and up and I don't believe that they've been upgraded in a way that justifies multiplying the price by 2 1/2 times in just over 5 years.

Simply old world fantastic, go and stay there. Expect to be mesmerised and charmed by this hotel - do not expect modern 5 star treatment but instead expect charm and genuine customer service; conservation rather than modernisation; sensation rather than sanitisation and a brief suspension of day to day reality. Love it and tell stories of staying there.

POSITIVES:

Without doubt, the most amazing building that we have ever stayed in (and we have travelled extensively to many, many countries).

Very friendly staff. Poh Seow, the Assistant Manager, in particular, went above and beyond an excellent service level to ensure that our stay was as good as it could be. A truly wonderful person!

NEGATIVES - None really just the following niggles:

Air conditioning and fan in room were extremely noisy.

Bathroom was a little tired (could do with updating, whilst keeping the old style). The shower curtain didn't reach the top of the bath edge, so the bathroom flooded with every shower taken.

OVERALL:

We would travel back to Penang just to stay here again. The perfect place to sit back and relax amid tranquil inner courtyards.

Like others say this is not a 5 star hotel but rather a very charming old residence. Walking around you admire the building, the rooms with their old floors creak, everything exudes age of another era, and you can't help but love the old world charm and wonder what it was like in it's original time.
Yes the air conditioning is noisy, the bathrooms are old, the breakfast is ok, the food court next door is noisy at night (which you forgive as its a good place to eat!), but it just has a lovely charm all of it's own. Great location, helpful staff and the tours didn't bother us.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs and ask for a room on the right side away from the food court.

This place is lovely, although don't expect it to be like a modern multi-starred hotel. This is not 21st century, it's over 100 years old and that it's charm. We stayed in the Nanyang room. A good sized room with antique furniture and a firm but comfortable bed. Rooms are air conditioned but the rest of the mansion isn't, being bullit around a courtyard open to the sky. The bathroom works well, although not entirely modern. The water is hot and plentiful. Breakfast was included with our room and was good. Staff are friendly and helpful. Most speak English. Zara the cat befriended us. She's adorable. The hotel is completely in keeping with the feel of old Georgetown and really well situated. Probably best to choose a room away from the adjacent Red Garden food market (which is a great place to eat but runs late).

At first the beauty and age of the place strikes you. Lots of Pictures to take of all that is around.

But.. keep in mind this place conducts 3 tours of the mansion daily. So there will be non-guest around from time to time. Some may even try their luck to push open the doors of your room. Do keep in mind to keep your doors lock, for that matter even when you are in.

Right next door is a food center. Which makes it really convenient or noisy. You be the judge.
