“Walking distance to historical places”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

No luxury hotel, but clean and perfect location in historical Georgetown. Many coffee shops around and eateries in 50 meters around.

I spent 3 nights over Chinese New Year in this hotel. My room was big and comfortable, bathroom with hot water and shower for 92 MR (high season) without BF.

Reception is welcoming and happy to give information. BF in one of the many and very friendly coffee shops.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

Reasonably priced and good value, clean & spacious rooms, everything works, washing sink of bathroon, conveniently located just off Chulia Street. Chinese style building, A/C lobby area, Reception staff crusty but warm to paying customers, 6 TV channels (none in English).

“Sometimes I splurge, sometimes I like to rough it!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

Hong Ping was a crazy little hotel in a really busy part of Georgetown, I ended up staying there as I needed to get checked in somewhere quickly as I had been thoroughly drenched during a thunderstorm.

It was very cheap, £13 for the night, the room was what you would expect for £13 but it did have great views across the city and as the storm that drenched me initially came back I was treated to an amazing lightning storm after dark!

It was a quirky little place but I don't at all regret staying there, certainly a must if your on a tight budget.

“It's not the ritz, but neither is the pricetag”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We have stayed at the Hong ping a few times over the last few years. It's only a few ringitts more than other guesthouses /hotels in the area but is definitely a step up from most of the other backpackers places. The reception staff are always really helpful and offer good travel advice for penang, they even sorted out a local dentist for us when we needed one.
The rooms are a bit dated but comfortable and come with air con and tv. T
he beds are good as well and we always sleep well. The bathroom are big and there's a big container in the corner if you want to do some washing , thehousekeeping staff re friendly too and the rooms are cleaned daily.
Overall its not the ritz ,but a good choice if you are on a budget in penang

“Very good in many respects.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2012

I stayed here for four nights during a one month trip around Malaysia.

There is a big concentration of guesthouses, small-hotels, boutiques and rented apartments around this area of Georgetown. Having arrived early in the day, I had the opportunity to check around many before deciding on which to stay. The price of the room i payed at Hong Ping was 70RM and for that i had a spacious room that was very clean, t.v., air-con, a lovely shower and a room with natural light. Having gone around many of the guesthouses where backpackers congregate, i thought that, for the price, this room was of a better value. It is a fairly large building in a good location right next to the hawker stands selling delicious food and some bars close-by. Its also ideal for a walking tour around Georgetown and is central to Khoo Kongsi, Temple of Mercy, Penang Museum etc and about a 10-15 minute walk to Fort Cornwallis, the clock tower. To reach the ferry point to Butterworth its around 20 minutes. There is a bus-stop just outside. I mostly took bus numbers 101, 102 and 104. These buses can take you out to Penang National Park, Batu Ferrengi, Kek Lok Si temple, Penang Hill as well as the airport and snake temple. So most, if not all, of the tourist attractions for Penang can be reached from this bus-stop just outside the hotel.

The people were nice and informative here. Told me about places to go and helped me with my onward journey from Penang.

In Georgetown the prices are generally higher than most other places in Malaysia and having looked at many rooms for around 40-50RM in the guesthouses that were no more than boxes and very hot inside i figure just pay 20 RM more and stay in a spacious, clean, cool budget hotel.
