Description: HUG-LOGO-TINYUdang Galah, also known as "Giant River Prawn" or "Malaysian" prawn, is native to Southeast Asia - typically in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Many years ago, Udang Galah was very common among the natives, who would capture and cook them fresh to preserve the aromatic taste and succulent texture of the flesh. Today, Udang Galah is no longer known to many Malaysians. In fact, Udang Galah is part of our national food heritage. This large-sized fresh water prawn, which has a very big head in comparison to its entire body, can only be found in very few local menus. However, they are highly priced and hence, not a affordable choice to many. This is why we came up with this unique concept restaurant, the House of Udang Galah where everyone can see it, feel it, taste it and think of it always! The House of Udang Galah is a unique concept restaurant that provides unrivaled fresh Udang Galah cuisine in a variety of styles you can choose, from an affordable price. Udang Galah served on your table are freshly cooked from live stock. Whether you prefer it in Italian, Western, Malay, Indian or Chinese, you will find our menu satisfying. If you have specific needs in your menu, do let us know! We are determined to provide you with high quality gourmet dishes in an affordable price. We do not compromise the quality and size of servings, even your coffee are served exquisitely. Therefore, bring your family and friends with you so that they too can share the experience with us without breaking your bank.

“Run by quite a showman but the food was good !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

The owner is very proud of his restaurant and food and shows newcomers around the entire restored building. He also suggests/orders rather more food and more expensively than maybe we would have chosen but we were in the mood to go along with it (within reason) and it was very tasty. I am still amazed at how much my husband ate. It is in an area with few other restaurants but not too difficult to find.

“Average Cantonese Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

The dishes here are hit or miss. Some are quite good; some are so so.

The price is high compared to other local restaurants but still cheap in western standard.

“Fantastic tasting river prawns in an historic building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Udang I understand means prawn, and this restaurant breeds these very aggressive fresh water prawns and prepares excellent dishes to eat!!! The old Penang house is nearly 100 years old and you get a tour of the house as part of your visit, the owner is quite rightly very proud of his restoration and there is also a chat on the prawn business from eggs to the pan! actually if you are not a vegetarian it is interesting. Anyway, this restaurant is famous for its prawn dishes and it's signature dish of prawn in lime juice is brilliant! the juice alone is worth savouring like a soup. We also tried the roast chicken as recommended by an earlier review and yes I enjoyed that. Excellent veg options, try the kale with crab and seaweed, excellent!!. They do have a small selection of wine but the owner is happy for you to bring your own, obviously they have a selection of juices & teas but the main offering is the food. The service is very attentive and having lived in Asia this is very common! some visitors may find it too much but food is the business and they want yo ensure you are happy! Just relax and enjoy the wonderful taste of the food. Sadly we were only there for one night as. I would have liked to try some other dishes, this should be on your list of restaurants to visit"!!! For local business people the the upstairs is set up for meetings and food or can be used for a large private party, I am not on commission!!!!.

“Truly amazing Chinese food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

Decided to try this restaurant as it was close to our hotel on our last night in Penang, my only regret was that we did not find it on our first night.
The menu is wide ranging with lots of choice but with help from the owner and the waitress we made our choices. I was determined to have the signature dish of freshwater prawns with lime but only ordered a small portion as my husband is more a meat eater. The owner recommended the roast chicken, my first thoughts were of standard western roast chicken and almost resisted. I am so glad I didn't as it was truly delicious. We also had some mixed vegetables with spicy sauce, which we both enjoyed along with the hot and sour soup which was the only dish I had tried before.
To finish off we shared a dessert of mango and sago, a fitting end to a wonderful meal.
Whilst waiting for our food we were given a tour of the building, a beautiful old building, and went to see the live prawns in there tanks and had the breeding process explained.
