“Value for money - good location, cosy, wonderful staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

Located just outside the core heritage zone of George Town, this hotel offers easy walking access to the major attractions at a reasonable price. I stayed in the Deluxe room for 3 nights. The room was cosy, however, my only gripe was that for a hotel that is fairly new, there were a number of defects like the taps on the sink not secured and another tap head that had broken. Also, a lamp at the dressing table would have been useful. Food-wise, not an issue, as there are many street foods available around the hotel area. Just ask the reception and they will even provide you with a food map. Staff at the hotel were very helpful. They provided advice on the local bus services and when i left the hotel at 6am to get up to Penang Hill to catch the sunrise, they even prepared breakfast to go.

I would love to give this hotel an excellent rating ...the building alone deserves it BUT there is something about it that cries out for training for the staff who are pleasant and helpful within their very strict guidelines but seem to have little flexibility if something out of the ordinary demands a solution. For example when we arrived we discovered that the tap fitting was damaged on our bathroom basin....the first response by staff was ..."we'll you still have water". It took a little time for the staff member to appreciate that firstly we were reporting a fault for repair and secondly we expected not only water but the fully functioning facilities we had paid for.

Many other reviews have talked in a complementary way about the largeness to the rooms and this may be true for those located on the front of the building, but my sister-in- law who joined us from Singapore a little later was allocated a room on the back of the building that in all honesty was only the size of a broom closet. We had asked to see the room she would have prior to her arrival but the hotel could not accommodate this for some obscure reason ...when we finally saw the room we were embarrassed by its size but we were advised a change could not be arranged. To add insult to injury the hotel car arranged to meet our relative at the airport did not arrive to collect her and she eventually made her way to the hotel by taxi arriving very late and giving cause for concern...BUT AGAIN NO APOLOGY OF ANY DESCRIPTION WAS PROFERRED by THE HOTEL STAFF..VERY, VERY STRANGE AND UNUSUAL. When we we checking out we were told that a small amount of money was owing for a packet of chips we had not consumed...the front desk called for senior management who, waving a hotel inventory list in hand, demanded payment. Of course we paid...a don't believe in scenes for trifles and my wife was concerned that the room cleaner would suffer for a missing item.

Recommended option if you spend a couple of nights in town. Nice hotel, good location and efficient staff.

We stayed in the family suite and everything was ok.

However, breakfast was small and with not variety. they could improve it.

We stayed here in May during our honeymoon. We had the best stay! Very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel has just been renovated and the ambiance is very nice: colonial architecture and lovely vintage/ colonial/ Chinese furniture in all hotel areas. The breakfast (poached eggs and 3 more options to choose) was delicious. The location is also nice: just a short walk from many sites to see and food stables, but still in a quiet street. Don’t look further, just go here!

This is a lovely hotel in converted terrace houses just a street from the listed heritage area of GeorgeTown. Great ambience, friendly helpful staff, great value. Would agree with the other comments that the bathroom design is odd, but would highly recommend as a base in GeorgeTown.

This place is very friendly. The building is lovely. The hotel is apparently in a "soft opening" stage but you couldn't really tell, the staff were very nice. Breakfast is either eggs or nasi lemak with juice, tea and coffee (pretty good). The room was comfortable, no complaints. It's a walk away from China town and Penang Street. It's not in the old town but you can either walk there (about 15 mins) or get a taxi. Overall I would recommend it.

I cannot fault the Museum Hotel. It has everything I love in a place to stay. Small enough to offer personal service with plenty of character to make it a memorable stay. Other reviewers have commented on the heritage vibe of the hotel, I want to focus on the quality of the service. I have never received better service than I did here. The team went out of their way to ensure my stay was comfortable. For example, I came back late in the afternoon after walking around Georgetown, fairly hot and sweaty. After collecting my key and heading up to my room, I heard a knock on the door and it was the front desk staff with a fresh cold fruit juice for me. Fantastic. It's a lot of little things that make up its 5* service. They have a nightly turn-down service and each night you will find a different treat on your bed with a note explaining the choice.

I was able to book my stay here at a very good price, possibly due to it's recent opening. So don't delay, get in quick and enjoy the character and hospitality the Museum Hotel offers. I will be staying here next time in Penang regardless of price rises.

Room Tip: I was in a double on the second floor which was great. I did get a look at the family room opposite...
