“Typical backpacker - Basic, clean, central to most things in Penang”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

Georgetown is where most food places, heritage sites, and interesting happenings are located. Guest Inn Muntri sits in one of its many small streets. It provides popular backpacker needs like free wifi (at the hall), free coffee and tea, free breakfast, and basic rooms at an affordable rate. The bicycles for rent are especially useful if you want to travel around Georgetown.

Its facilities are very new and are well maintained. Cleanliness is nothing to complain about.

The only drawback here is the thin walls so it gets noisy at night when people are returning and organising, and in the early morning when people are packing up and leaving. But then again, this happens at most backpacker inns.

Room Tip: Several common bathrooms are located along the corridor of rooms, making them very convenient for us...

Have a great Hari Raya holiday in Guest Inn Muntri. Welcome by friendly staffs, guide us to all delicious food in Penang. Room price is OK, value of money. Location is nice, in heritage street. Junction is the happening food court, Red Garden. Plenty of local nice food there. Hawkers street is walking distance from inn. :D

We stayed at Guest Inn Muntri for 4 nights. The hostel is relatively new and still trying to develop some atmosphere and character.

The room was clean and very, very basic. As it is common in Malaysian hostels - no windows and very thin walls. Bathrooms could use some better and more frequent cleaning. The staff was OK.

Very good location.

We arrived at Guest Inn Muntri and were greeted by two very friendly ladies at reception. The common area behind reception was very inviting, will several rattan tables and chairs and a pleasant fountain. Cold beer and juices were also available in the reception area for fairly reasonable prices.

Our room was upstairs on the second floor. It was a moderately spacious standard double with a good bed and a decent amount of floor space. Our room had a window, so there was some natural light. There is also a second small common area on the floor.

There were two drawbacks: 1) Our room was on the street and it was very noisy for most of the night. 2) All bathrooms are shared. My wife and I are in our 40's, so this isn't really our thing anymore. If it doesn't bother you, don't consider it a drawback. I will say that the bathrooms were clean.

My strongest suggestion if you stay here is to get a room back from the street.

The guest inn is a good choice for budget trips... It was clean. The room is quite small, but managed to serve as a good place to sleep... The bed is totally cozy... My friend and I got problems when we are trying to get up in the morning. It's quite near to the night hawker stalls

Room Tip: They have wooden floor upstairs so you may hear banging sounds when people is walking on it. I tries...

We stayed a couple of nights in June 2012, paying somewhere in the mid 60's for a double room upsatairs, with shared shower. The room was clean, and as expected from a new hotel, the bed etc was all spotless. It could have been a bit bigger, but at that price, I had no complaints. The a/c and wi fi were all fine. The showers were clean, and worked well on our visit. Coffee and tea are available free all day. Negatives: the "breakfast" was just jam on toast and coffee, which you put together yourself. The bread runs out if you are not quick off the mark. Our room overlooked the street, where there is a school, so each mornng we we awoken at about 7am by hundreds of testosterone fuelled boys arriving on their motorbikes. Keep that in mind if you stay in school time. Lastly, I thought the reception area would have looked nicer if they had used traditional tiles, rather than a drab concrete floor. All in all, we were happy at this choice, but lets see how the Guest Inn matures over time.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the street in term time.
