“My preferred hotel stay in penang”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2014

This is not my first time staying in sunway hotel. I chose to come back for the stay as the hotel is clean n well maintained. The more important thing is its location where local hawker food can be found just in front of the hotel.

The hotel is newly renovated and tastefully done and very comfortable to explore Georgetown. The staff specially Mr. Sivaji were very obliging and helpful at all times. The only fault would be a small pool and breakfast quality could be vastly improved. After all this is in Penang. However lot of choices close to hotel and great value for a couple of days to explore Georgetown.

The Sunway is by no means fancy, but it is clean, modern, spacious and the service is very attentive. It is very affordable and relatively well located…only a 10 to 15 minute walk to the historic areas. Near shopping if that's your thing.

Room Tip: Upper floor, good view.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

When we first arrived to check in, I was a little disappointed that the hotel wasn't closer to Lebuh Chulia, one of the main streets in Georgetown but I quickly got over it. Check in was only a little too long as the person ahead of us has some complication that took longer than it should have. Regardless, we were treated to fresh, chilled juice while we waited and got to our room in no time. The lobby was spacious and airy. Everything struck me as being 'Q-Tip' clean, especially the rooms. I found the chimes that played in the hotel's hallways to be a little annoying but that's a mighty petty peeve. The room itself was more than adequately-sized and had almost all the amenities I prefer, which include a small refrigerator. All of the furnishings appeared to be new. There were no robes but I never use them anyway, especially not in the tropics.

One night my wife had an occasion to use room service and her order arrived quickly. The food was hot, tasty and not too expensive. Our room did not come with breakfast and when we inquired about the cost of helping ourselves to the breakfast buffet, we were told it would cost us RM32.00 each, which we felt was too much. There were many places near the hotel to eat where one could purchase a full meal for two for less than RM10.00.

I have to give the Sunway Hotel five stars. They did everything right. Our stay there was flawless.

At this rate it will be good to include breakfast & during Taipusam Tamil newspaper should be provided at request. After recent renovation rooms are excellent & lift need fine tuning. Something special surprise for Guest will be good - some ideas such as take them around the island, fruit basket upon arrival will add value.

Overall very good hotel.. Fast Wifi, friendly staffs, very quick check in, as well as check out.
The hotel very near to the Penang hawker stalls with many local foods and also located near Komtar and some other shopping malls.

Stayed at the 14th floor. Very commendable service from time of arrival at the door till departure. Room was just renovated recently, I was told. Very clean, spacious enough. Aircon could cool the room down very quickly so there is no necessity to leave the card in place to keep the room cool when you return.
The popular New Lane hawker stals are open for business from around noon till 10pm when they start to wind down. They are closed on WEDs. The road becomes a one-way street from 4pm-12am daily so entry by any vehicle will be only from the back as entry by Macalister Road is prohibited during that duration.
My favourite stalls are the chee chong fun on the left (coming fr Sunway). An old uncle prepares them. I usually tapow 15pkts x3rolls to bring back to Singapore if my departure timing matches nicely. RM1 per roll.
The Char Kway Teow from the right hand side building/coffee shop on the higher ground is also not bad. Costs RM6 per plate.
Sar Hor Fun from the coffeeshop nearest the hotel on left is not bad too. (the stall behind the apong/kuih ketayap seller)
There is a taxi stand right opposite the hotel & most trips cost around RM18. They do not use the meter. Trips from the hotel to Gurney Paragon/Plaza, Bangkok Lane for Indian Mee or Pulau Tikus area costs RM18.
I was very happy with the overall stay. Value for money, good location, wonderful staff.

The only little suggestion I would add is for the provision of firmer support pillows.

Room Tip: The higher floors especially the deluxe club floors, are nice.
