“Colonial style hotel by the sea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed today NEW

The oldest hotel in Penang, but very comfortable, clean and quaint. Charming and the rooms are huge. Great views. Service is wonderful. Staff very pleasant. Nice pool areas. Breakfast buffet offers a variety of options. Spa service is incredible. Only negative is that coffee drinks (ie lattes) need improvement.

Nice room that meets one's expectation for a 5 star hotel...
In Penang, there are plenty of hotels from 5 stars Hotel to Boutique Hotels to Backpacker's Inn...
I paid for almost SGD 300 for 1 night stay in this hotel since I have never stay here before. I simply love the room, the sea view from room and the environment.
As I'm trying the different hotels in Penang... I will not be back so soon. But I had recommended my friend this hotel as it's the best I had tried in Penang so far....

I recently spent 4 nights at this hotel. Service was very good, food a wide selection in the buffet. If you are looking to lie on a beach then this hotel is not for you. Close to other restaurants and food markets where you can eat very cheaply. Stayed in the Victory Annexe wing being the new building which is connected to the original building built in 1885.
I just wish management would enforce the dress code and kids access to the Planters Lounge during cocktail hour. If I can dress reasonably and not burden my kids on the other guests as per the rules then other guests should be considerate enough to do the same.
Having said that the staff and service is very good, pity about other issues.

This is some out of common hotel with a nice personal touch. For instance instead of ‘turn down’, they ask if I you need some extra towel or water, and all soft drinks of the mini bar are free.
Also, all occupants of ‘Victory Annexe’ building can use the ‘planters lounge’. This is a standard nice executive club lounge, serving breakfast and evening cocktails, but no fresh fruit and vegetables, which is the main I look for at a lounge

Rooms are very spacious, extra clean, separate bathtub and large shower cubicle, very good water temperature and pressure, good amenities, and everything you would expect from a luxury hotel.
Air conditioning system is also very good, giving the exact temperature, and silent.
They have an Espresso machine in the room, and a variety of tea and coffee, fine amenities, and more.
My room had a large nice balcony with great view to the sea, which so close to your window.

The room types are somehow confusing. Rooms at the Victory Annexe building are cheaper than those of the original old building, but on the other hand get more benefits.

However there are some problems in the hotel as well:

1. The chair at the desk is definitely not for working, and will cause you back pain after 10 minutes. Why are there still hotels that can’t get a comfortable chair for a working environment?

2. Room is far from being sound proof. You here every door closing, every one passing the corridor, and every neigbor using the toilet of shower.

3. I don’t know if that is the case in all rooms, but in my room there was no mobile reception at most times.

4. The bed is on the hard side, not exactly western style.

5. The rooms are expensive, even using the pre-paid cheaper option; I ended up paying US$ 220. That was still acceptable, as it was my choice to be here, however, what’s crazy, is that during checkout they as for 3 Malaysian Ringgit for some kind of tax! This is already insane! Couldn’t that fee (worth just 80 cents), have been added to the $220 bill?

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for choosing the Eastern & Oriental Hotel and for
taking the time in giving your feedback.

It is nice to know that overall you had an enjoyable stay with
us. We value all feedbacks from our guests, as this is the only
way to ensure we continually improve our product and service.

Allow us to clarify, the 1-hour complimentary drinks and snacks
at the Planters Lounge is an added facility made available for
guests staying in the new Victory Annexe wing as part of our
benefit added to the opening of the new wing a year ago, and
it is not a Club/Executive lounge like some other hotels.

Though we cannot physically change the hotel, we take note of
any suggestions or feedback from guests and review with our
team members as we plan for future improvement.

With regards to the noise levels you experienced, we make every
effort to ensure our guests are provided peace and comfort during
their stay and we are sorry for any disturbance.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback. We look forward
to welcoming you back again in the near future.

Kind regards,
The Management

This was our fourth stay within a 16 month period and we absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived to the sad time we left we thoroughly enjoyed everything about this hotel and it's wonderful staff.

We had breakfast daily in either the quiet and peaceful Planters Lounge where there is a good choice of western food and on other occasions we were drawn to Sarkies for the fabulous fresh juices and local food however the food was delicious in both dining areas.

As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a complementary coctails hour in The Planters Lounge where there are a range of spirits, juices, wine and predinner canapies which is a lovely touch.

We also dined on a couple of nights in Sarkies buffet which offers a wonderful choice of food and provided us with the opportunity to try new dishes. On each occasion we left the restaurant feeling that we had had an enjoyable evening and meal.

The standard of accommodation is simply wonderful. Each suite is spacious and ours had a wonderful view of the ocean. It was lovely to wake up each morning to the sound of the waves and sometimes we would pull the curtains back , open the balcony door and get back into bed and relax to this peaceful sound.

We always choose to stay in first class hotels and this certainly has lived upto our standards and requirements on each occasion. As I mentioned previously, the service and staff are truly wonderful and strive and succeed in pleasing us. It is very unusual for us to single out individuals when we have received overall good service but there are some staff here that certainly go that extra mile and we would like to thank them making our stays so very special namely, Salim on Reception who really cannot do enough for us, when asked he has suggested restaurants that he thinks we would like and greets us like a lifelong friend whenever we meet, Dean in Planters Lounge and Isi in Sarkies Corner who are both wonderfully attentive, very helpful, friendly and have given top class service to us on all of our stays. You are all stars, many thanks to the three of you and also to all of the other fantastic staff at The E&O.

To summarise, this is a great hotel with wonderful staff who provide first class service (without being stuffy and pompous) and all at a reasonable cost. We will be back in December for some more of this wonderful hospitality.

Stayed in Victory annex, room extremely spacious, well appointed and beautifully comfortable. Spectacular views. A classy hotel excellent buffet breakfast and seating outdoors just perfect. The staff so very helpful, friendly and professional, nothing a problem. Only good things to say about the E&O. Thoroughly recommend. Loved it so much already booked to go back.

Room Tip: The suites are great

Generally a pleasant stay on my recent trip to George Town. As per all other review's the grounds & views is fantastic. To get into detail please see points of my experience:

- Arrival check in generally efficient, if not lacking a bit more hospitable attitudes from staff
- Stayed 3 nights inthe Victory Annexe suites
- Very lovely rooms, awesome bathrooms w/ nice amenities
- Beautiful ocean views from room balcony
- Mini-bar non-alcoholic beverages complimentary
- The bed/mattress was the biggest disappointment from my whole experience, such a beautiful room/grounds then you go to bed and it's like awesome! A hard cheap bed, no cushion to it at all. Upgrade those mattresses!
- Sarkies for breakfast was very nice, the buffet had generally everything you would want to start your day. Views of the ocean while eating on the patio was very beautiful.
- Farquhar's Bar is a great place have a couple drinks have a day of walking. The E&O Sling is my new favourite beverage, I also enjoyed several meals as well.
- Arrangements for taxi for early morning flight was easy enough, just a matter of speaking with front desk and advising your room number, the time your departing.
- Was provided complimentary bagged breakfast assembled by the hotel upon checkout since it was very early morning. Nice touch for a departing guest.

Overall I give the Eastern & Oriental Hotel a 4, this is based on the points I have outlined. The major things to me that require improvement is that the mattresses require replacement, consistency in service from front staff with a bit more hospitable professionalism, specifically the day front staff.
