“Friendly service and colonial building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013 via mobile

I stayed in the Eastern & Oriental with my older mum. From the minute we walked into the spacious bright colonial reception we knew we were taking a step back through to a slower more serene time. After a warm journey from the airport there's nothing better than being greeted with a big smile, being shown a comfortable armchair and being given a cold refreshing drink and ice cold hand towel.
We were upgraded to a huge suite overlooking the sea. Complementary fruit etc every day. The biggest bathroom, with 2 of everything, including 2 WCs!

We had a bit of a problem with our key not working and ended up having a veritable party in the lobby as members of staff tried to help. Very funny!

Wishing to gain a flavor of the area we walked 5 minutes onto the high street and ate at the hawker stalls. We are with the locals, which included rice from a banana leaf, curry and the most fantastically pulpy fresh orange juice. All for about £5 for 2.

We had dinner at the hotel restaurant one night, which was excellent, with great service, but came at a hefty price.

The hotel arranged for a private tour with David Yeoh. He was excellent and definitely made our trip to Penang very special. We saw Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple, the snake temple (be prepared to have a photo with snake round your neck!), Penang Hill and lots more. His local knowledge means that he stops at stalls of fruit at a bend in the road and let's us try produce including several types of bananas.

We loved this hotel.

ear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us.

It is always a pleasure for the entire team to receive such praises and we are
more than delighted that you enjoyed the quality services we aim to provide.

Please accept my apology that you have experienced problem working the key
card.

I take good note of your comments regarding hefty price for dining. We do
monitor our prices compared to the other similar hotels on the island . As a
result I had always felt that our prices were in line with our competitor hotels.
It is important to me that we offer value for money for our guests.

Glad that you were able to enjoy the private tour, visiting few places of attractions
in Penang.

It is our sincere hope that you will visit us again soon.

Kind regards,

We had a 4 night stay in September, the staff were all very polite and professional, we were checked in very quickly. Our room was in the Victory Annexe, it was very large, decorated very nicely in old colonial style, the bathroom was especially nice with a stand alone bath in the middle and a great shower, there was also a dressing area that had 2 sinks. The bed was really comfy. The windows opened to the balcony with a sea view and actually slid right open, like patio doors making it seem bigger.
The breakfast, was very nice, with a big choice, you could eat indoors or outside under the verandah. The infinity swimming pool on the 6th floor had the most amazing view, the furniture around it all seemed colonial in style but was new. Also on the 6th floor from 5pm to 7pm you can go and get free drinks and nibbles, which was a very nice idea. The whole atmosphere of the hotel was very relaxing, we would definitely like to return.

We stayed 3 nights at the E&O in the "new" wing, the Victory Annexe, which I believe was built in 1922 but refurbished in recent years. This is a beautiful hotel and our room had a small balcony right over the water. The bathroom is huge with twin sinks, my only (minor) gripe being the poor lighting in the vanity area, making it impossible to apply makeup. This is a common gripe of mine in many upmarket hotels. We roamed the whole hotel, such is its beauty and history and were directed to the museum at the back of the Victory Annexe which was most interesting. Staff were helpful and polite, the breakfast selection amazing and the 2- hour happy hours on the 6th floor quite wonderful and unexpected. We had to restrain ourselves on the last night as we hadn't actually partaken of any of the famed local Penang cuisine. We made use of the infinity pool after our return from self-guided walks of Georgetown in the humidity and posted photos home to envious family who were experiencing bad weather. My husband kept asking me why I had only allowed 3 days at the E&O and I do regret the short stay. When I'm rich and not necessarily famous I may well take up residence.

Stayed at the E&O for 5 nights in September in the Victory annexe. Our room was huge, comfortable and wonderfully decorated in both modern and colonial fashion. All of these rooms have a balcony with sea view. Breakfast was varied and plentiful from western to asian and all beautifully presented. The 2 hour "open bar" each evening on the 6th floor was welcomed after a long day sightseeing with premium spirits/mixers, beers, soft drinks, tea/coffee with western and asian nibbles. We loved the quiet of the infinity pool on floor 6 and the attentiveness of the pool staff. They constantly refilled our glasses with ice cold water and iced facecloths to freshen up.
This is truly a wonderful place to stay whether in the heritage wing or the victory annexe.

Checked into Eastern & Oriental Hotel over the holiday weekend in Singapore (National Day). Lovely, lovely hotel. Excellent service from the moment we set foot into the hotel. Everyone was polite and smiled a lot. We stayed in the new wing - Victory Annex with an excellent sea-view room. You can actually hear the sound of waves in the room if you leave the balcony door open.

The evening "cocktail hours" were fantastic! Free flow of alcohol. Finger food. What's not to like?

The hotel places a lot of importance on the little details - one of the most impressive I've ever seen. Just to give an example - you know the ash-tray on top of the litter-bins in the hotel lobbies? If you're early enough in the morning, and curious enough to sneak a peek at it, you'll see that the sand on it has the E&O logo in it.

Special mention for the front-desk staff at Victory Annex. If I recall correctly, one of the sweet young lady (Ms Evelyn Ooi, I think? Hope I got the name right.) was particularly helpful when we had a couple of questions. My wife and I merely wanted to ask whether the hotel has affiliated guided tours available for the Georgetown area, and she spent a fair amount of time explaining to us the points of interest near the hotel and marked them on a map for us, which showed her knowledge of the area. We were very appreciative of her excellent service, so extra compliments to her!

Room Tip: Victory Annex, sea-facing room is lovely - request for one when making your reservation.

Stayed 4 nights in the new wing (Victory Annexxe) of the E and O.
Rooms were large and beautifully appointed, with a blend of colonial and modern fittings.
Breakast buffet was fantastic with a large variety of local and international foods.
Each room of the new wing comes wih 2 hours of free cocktails each evening, which was a welcome treat after a day out and about.

Hotel is located in the heart of Georgetown with plenty of great spots to eat and plenty of night life.

Highly recommend a trishaw ride...our guy was a wealth of knowledge!

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views, but a centrally located position will maximize the views

Stayed in a Victory Annexe room which was very comfortable and spacious with a beautiful view and a beautiful large bathroom with free standing bath! The staff were wonderful and the 'happy hour' on the 6th floor was the best ever! Free drinks and nibbles in a wonderful setting between 5-7pm each night! There was a vast selection of food for breakfast, western and Asian all excellent. The infinity pool was a great place too cool down in. The hotel is close to all the sights. Had a fabulous three night stay and didn't want to leave!
