“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stayed in the new wing which had a very large and extremely comfortable room, with a generous balcony. The pool on level 6 was fabulous with food and drinks available which provided a great source of relief after a hard day's sightseeing in the heat!! The drinks from 5-7 were also greatly appreciated and the service was delightful.

Room Tip: The high floor was excellent.

We stayed in the new 'Victory Annexe' and any lingering doubts we had that we may not get the true E&O experience were quickly dispelled. The new wing has been very tastefully created to fit in well alongside the classic grandeur of the original building.
The benefit is that whilst still very tastefully done, the rooms are larger and lighter with an incredible inddor/outdoor space thanks to the balcony floor to ceiling doors.
The sleeping area is large and airy and the bathroom is luxurious to say the very least with stand alone bathtub, rainforest shower and 'his and 'hers' hand basins.
The service is exactly what you would expect, understated but nigh on perfect. We requested a room change and it was dealt with promptly and with the minimum of fuss.
The staff cannot do enough to help and there is no stuffy atmosphere that is sometimes associiated with deluxe hotels, in fact the doormen were always willing to have a laugh and joke and make you feel part of the family.
Also, with the rooms in the new wing you get access to the executive lounge which is adjacent to the swimming pool and overlooks the straits of Mallaca. From five until seven each evening there is a happy hour with finger food and free cocktails so you can sit and look across to the mainland whilst sipping on your gin and tonic. The F&B outlets were also top quality, especially the high tea.
TIP: If you are a very light sleeper you may not want to be in the rooms ending in 1,2 or 3 as they overlook a club carpark and the noise can carry, especially if you have the balcony doors open to be soothed to sleep by the lapping waves. We mentioned it to the staff and were immediately moved with no problem at all.
I would go back here in a heartbeat, treat yourself and get it booked.

We loved the E&O! Our taxi driver dropped us at the older heritage wing lobby (which felt very grand) and the staff member at reception walked us through the hotel to the new wing lobby, the Victory Annexe (very grand again!) and sat us down while he went and arranged our check-in with the staff there. All the staff we encountered throughout our stay were very professional, well-presented and helpful – they really added to the overall feel of the hotel, without being stuffy or pretentious.

Our room was large, clean and modern although the décor was very fitting for the atmosphere. Our balcony overlooking the water was lovely, and the bathroom was large and impressive. We were provided fruit and free soft drinks and water in our room, and also had access to the Planters Lounge for complimentary drinks and food (including wine and beer) from 5-7pm each day, again with the beautiful views over the water. The pool area in the new wing was also lovely, it was a horizon pool with the same spectacular views (I think all the rooms in the hotel have these views!). We ate lunch at the pool, breakfast at the downstairs Sarkie’s buffet, and had room service dinner one evening, and were happy with the standard of the food.

The only minor issues we noticed were that you can hear noise from the hallways and other rooms quite easily (footsteps, doors etc) so this may bother you if you are a light sleeper but we didn’t have any problems. The other thing was there seemed to be a lack of ventilation in the bathroom so all the mirrors fogged up unless you left the doors open when showering (not ideal when not staying with your partner) and there was no mirror in the main room. It would be better if the doors on the bathroom leading to the sink/wardrobe area were moved to the shower/toilet area so that you could shut these off and leave the sinks/wardrobes accessible to the main room.

We really enjoyed just spending time wandering around both wings of the hotel, soaking up the atmosphere and learning a little about the history. It is also in a great location in Georgetown if you want to wander around the heritage areas in the city. The best thing about the hotel is that it provides guests with a really quality experience where you feel special and relaxed at the same time. We hope to return one day!

Room Tip: Definitely go for Victory Annexe rooms in the new wing!

Spent a long weekend here recently. was given a room on the 10th floor, overlooking the sea so the view was breathtaking.
liked the room, very comfortable and clean and beautifully decorated.
hotel was very grand, pool and gym were on the 6th floor. each day from 5 to 7 pm, free drinks and snacks were served at the lounge on the 6th floor, which was really nice!
breakfast buffet had the best fried kuay teow!
service was good, the staff very polite and helpful save for one small incident at the front desk where a foreign guest was attended to before my husband was, even though my husband was there first. when my husband questioned, the girl at the counter actually argued with him. not good.
locationwise, it is just across the road from penang road where there are many restaurants, so it's quite central.
we were at the new wing and the walk to the old wing was especially enjoyable and we had a good time 'exploring' the old historical wing.
i have heard of the E & O and we have driven past this hotel many times when we visited penang, but this time we got to stay here and I loved it.
except for the tiny incident at the front desk, this would have been a perfect weekend getaway!

I stayed two nights at this beautiful old hotel and just loved it! The suite was large and very comfortable indeed.
This was the first time I had seen the new wing and although I did not stay there it looked wonderful. The swimming pool on level 6 is very well done and faces out onto the water and the mainland - the water was quite cool but very refreshing on a warm day.
Breakfast is now in the main restaurant in the new wing and is very comprehensive - freshly made roti chanai - freshly squeezed juices - eggs to order - everything you could ask for (except a second cup of coffee). My downfall at most buffets!

We had the most wonderful three night stay at the E&O and can't wait to go back! We had the most beautiful room with stunning view. Location is stunning by the water but also very central and within walking distance to most attractions in Georgetown. Loved chilling in Farquhar's bar in the evenings. The staff we were amazingly helpful and friendly. Loved very minute of minute of it.

Wonderful old world charm.
Beautiful rooms and location is excellent
A bit let down by the finishes, service not brilliant and food mediocre but definitely still worth staying at for the ambience and charm
