“Elegance in Penang”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2007

The E&O is a beautiful hotel with an air of faded colonial glory.
The rooms are enormous, clean and tastefully furnished.
The pool area is elegant & relaxing although the sea next to it looked dirty and smelly (there is no beach area here).
The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the hotel is in a fantastic location.
The only downside for me was that the buffet breakfast was not up to standards of other 5 star establishments - the food was a little stale.

The Eastern and Oriental, on par with Raffles and very much better than the Strand, Rangoon is the reborn child of the Sarkies brothers who amazingly founded all these fine hotels in the 1890´s. We stayed in the Rudyard Kipling suite which by far was the best rooms we ever stayed in. At the internetrates we got, also one of the more affordable! Breakfasts were an absolute delight-but have them on the Verandah. As well as Your dinners. The themed buffet dinners are amazing value for money and VERY well made. The ambience of the dining/breakfast hall as such is however of a school dinner hall. The 1885 restaurant has a top class ambience, but all too high prices for our budget. Service through all the hotel is top class. We would love to return and do like the other guests did...We only stayed for three days and the litte old lady we asked told us they had been there for 39 days already and were staying another month!

  • Liked — The fabulous rooms. That Old Malaya still exists!
  • Disliked — Nothing

LOCATION: Excellent if you want to be in the city (Georgetown). There are tons of places to eat, a not too exciting China town night market, but mostly the surrounding area is nothing too exciting for a tourist.

BEST WAY TO GET THERE: Taxi’s are very inexpensive from the airport and all prices are fixed with no meters.

BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Bed was on the hard side with excellent linens and excellent down pillows.

LIGHTING: Excellent in living room, bedroom and bathroom (we had a suite)

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Excellent. Our bathroom was huge and stunning with marble throughout. The bathtub was very inviting with a separate very large shower area. Water pressure was inconsistent and would very from good to excellent and the water temperature could get very hot but would change temperature during the shower but not too much to make it too hot or too cold.

TOILETRIES: Great, the kind you want to take home.

CLEANLINESS: The entire room and common areas are spotless.

A/C: A/C worked very well, quickly got the room cold if desired without air blowing on your face while sleeping.

CLOSET SPACE: Good. Would have liked a little more space if 2 people are going to unpack all items.

STYLE OF ROOM: Very nice. Huge room with charming colonial feel with well appointed antiques and a huge bedroom, huge living room area, and huge bathroom.

QUIET/MORNING LIGHT: Our room had a city view and the cars and music from a nightclub could easily be heard at night. This might be one hotel to spring for the upgraded sea view to get both a better view and a much more quiet room. The room could be made pitch black during the morning light.

FOOD: We only had the included breakfast buffet for food. It was impressive. Been traveling for more than 6 months at almost 70 hotels and this could be the best breakfast buffet yet. Choices of several fresh juices. Pancakes, waffles and eggs will be made upon request, sushi (didn’t look too promising, though), 4 cereal options, and tons more.

TV/INTERNET: TV in both living room and bedroom were of good size and had plenty of English channels. Internet in the room costs 50 ringgit per day but there is free internet in the business center with 3 computers.

SERVICE: The staff here were the most pleasant and attentive in nearly all of our 60+ hotels in the last 6 months. All requests were granted the first time and the staff really seems to enjoy working at the E&O.

COMMON AREA: Very nice. There was a few areas where there was a lack of attention to detail, but only noticeable if looking for them. The hotel is gorgeous with a beautiful pool (that was a little bit too cloudy for my taste).

ROOM & CITY TIPS: Spend extra on the sea view room (see above). This location is the best in all of Georgetown. When walking in town next to all other hotels, absolutely nothing comes even close to the grandeur and beauty of the E&O. If Georgetown is your destination, then look no further and book your room. You’ll be happy you did

What a charming hotel! The staff was attentive, friendly & incredibly helpful. The food at the breakfast buffet was wonderful and the view was lovely. The hotel is within walking distance to the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion and other interesting sights in town. My only complaint about the hotel was that the A/C worked a bit too well....it was rather cool at times. I will definitely stay at the E&O the next time I'm in Pinang.

This is a beautiful hotel! I enjoyed every aspect. My room was perfect, wooden floor boards, view out to the sea. I absolutely loved it.

The E&O and its former sister hotel the Raffles in Singapore emit that old colonial British charm that unfortunately is on the brink of extinction in booming Asia.

The check-in at the hotel was definitely above average, we were served a welcome cocktail in the Lobby while the administrative task was completed and were then shown to our rooms by the attentive staff.

The rooms/suites were very spacious (Deluxe Suite 58 sqm with sea view and Georgetown suite 79 sqm, "city view"/ street), thus there is plenty of space. The furniture fits to the overall design of the hotel.

The only real negative aspect I could find is the water pressure. If you take a shower, you have to shower in intervals because the water pressure virtually drops to zero in-between. The air conditioning in the lobby is a little too cold.

Brekfast and also the lunch and dinner buffets are very good and offer a wide variety of food, thus I would highly recommend to try either the lunch or dinner buffet there.

The pool area and the Verandah offer a nice view.

I can highly recommend this hotel and would stay at the E&O again.

This is a very nice gem in a very tired area of Penang. The hotel and rooms were in a traditional colonial stye. We had a pleasant stay. If I had a complaint, it would be the food and service -- which was expensive but average to bad and frequently very slow. There are certainly less expensive options in Penang, such as the modern and ultra nice rooms at Trader's, but here you are paying more for staying at a colonial landmark.
