“Good service along with great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

We travelled to Penang for a short trip and stayed at the Cititel Penang for one night. Value and location is why we picked this hotel and we weren't disappointed. After travelling overnight we arrived into Penang in the morning. After a half hour and US$15 taxi ride from the airport, we entered the luxurious and well appointed lobby of the Cititel. Despite our 10am arrival, we were given early check in to our king size Superior room which was a God send at that point in our trip. The corner sea view room offered great views of the city and the sea, especially at sunset.

The room itself was nice and the sheets were clean, but the duvet did have a few stains on it. The bathroom is clean but simple and a contrast to the fancy lobby and other areas of the hotel. The air conditioning in the room was strong and a ceiling fan is also provided, but its speed can't be adjusted which made it less useful for us. Wifi was included in our rate and internet speed was good in our room, more than adequate to make calls using skype. An empty small fridge was provided, we didn't use it but it could be useful for leftovers. Two complimentary 500ml bottles of water were also given.

The next morning a paper was provided and checkout was a breeze. The hotel gladly held our luggage for a few hours before our flight in the afternoon.

Hotel is a great value with friendly staff and an excellent location from which to explore the Heritage area of Penang. It's also located in the nightlife area on the tip of Jalan Penang with great food options close by. Sup Hameed is literally at the foot of the hotel and a solid choice. The hotel is also a hub for trishaw operators which should be tried at least once for the experience.

Room Tip: Corner room facing the sea on a high floor offers the best view

Dear Guest

Selamat Sejahtera from Cititel Penang.

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive review of our hotel and I am glad to note you had a wonderful stay with us in Penang.

Your kind and gracious comments of our hotel services, facilities and location are greatly appreciated – thank you.

Please accept my apologies for our oversight where the duvet is concerned and please be assured that this is not our usual standard of service here. The control panel for our ceiling fan is located underneath the bedside table – again my apologies for our team was not thorough enough to show you its location when you checked into the room.

However, I am glad the above issues did not detract you from the overall enjoyment of your stay here and thank you once again for writing.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

With kind regards,
Tony Goh

We took a taxi from the Penang International Airport to the hotel (about 45 minutes) using coupon system, with the cost of RM45. The check-in/out processes were smooth.
Once we arrived in the afternoon, we were greeted by the staffs. They were polite and helpful. They took the effort in helping us to weigh our luggage prior heading to the airport.

Our non-smoking room request was granted with the sea view at 8th floor. The superior room was clean and fitted with wireless broadband internet access (complimentary use for two devices). The facilities stated in the hotel website for this room type were provided. Room access key is required when we enter the lift for security purpose.

The pocket-sized map in the hotel (courtesy of 1st Avenue Mall Penang) is very informative and easy-to-use. The location is good (Penang Road/Jalan Penang) since it is within walking distance to the Red Garden food court and for other local street food. The hotel is also near to the murals made famous by Ernest Zacharevic. We took a trishaw ride (RM40 per hour) to visit around the town. Georgetown is well-preserved for its historical and cultural values.

In short, strategically located hotel and satisfactory service by the staffs. Indeed, we enjoyed our stay.

We were pleasantly surprised when checked in, the room was a tad bit small but not a problem. It was very clean, bed was comfortable, and the best part is they had every toiletry and necessity you can think of supplied (bathroom). We didn't pay much for the 3 night stay so we weren't expecting to find razors, q-tips and sewing kits in the room. Our only complaint is the bathtub was draining too slow.
The location is great, right in historical grorgetown, walking distance from great local food in every direction, couple blocks away from tourist spots and shopping, bus stop across the street, convenience stores every where, trishaws parked right beside, a secret money changer in the little Indian convenience store right beside the hotel.
And we won't forget how awesome the bellman is, genuinely friendly and helpful with where to go and even gave us a bus route map which was super helpful.
Definitely stay at this hotel again!

Hello traveller friends! This time i would like to share my stay at Cititel, Georgetown. For those who wants to visit this town, i would recommend all of u to stay at this hotel. It is suitable for family, couples and business traveller. As my review title indicates, this hotel is located in the middle of Georgetown. By walking, you can reach the famous Hameeds 'nasi dalca' and soup just next to this hotel, 'nasi kandar line clear', chow rasta bazaar to buy local foods or 'jeruk', few historical places and museums. At night, there are pubs and cafe near to this hotel. The best part is, all of these are just in walking distance.

For the hotel, the receptionist and concierge are friendly and helpful, room is clean with basic amenities, food for breakfast is good. During my stay, the health centre is under renovation expected to be completed by April if i'm not mistaken.

In all, i love to stay at this hotel and recommend my fellow friends here to give a try. Adios!

I stayed here for 3 nights from 18th-21st Apr. Deluxe ocean view room was clean, pleasant, with all the basic facilities and big enough for 2 people.

Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We arrived at 1230am and we managed to get our keys to our room within 5mins! The staff did provide good tips on how to move around the island by taking the bus to the places of interest and the estimated taxi fare to negotiate with the drivers to our destinations. The rooms were made up nicely daily.

As one of the main objectives of my trip with my friend was to try the good Penang local food and sight seeing.

One of the highlights of our stay was the good knowledge provided by this customer service officer called Calvin who did the morning shift at the reception desk. He was very knowledgeable to provide suggestions on the good nearby eating place like the Lor Bak and porridge which was just 1 street away from the hotel. This was not found in any of the blogs that I had researched. Every morning of our stay, he was very approachable to patiently show us on the map of the places which we want to go. Thumbs up to him and all the staff working at the reception desk!

Room Tip: High floor with ocean view, the difference between the other category of rooms are not that much.

I stayed here for just one night on 12th March. Room was pleasant - clean, with all the basic facilities. The surprise was the breakfast buffet - which is included in the room rate. Not only was there basic coffee, but mocha, expresso, cappucino - you name it! There was Japanese food, Chinese, Malay, bread and to my delight, blue cheese - not something you would find in Malaysian hotels. Check in and out was fast and efficient. Staff were friendly and helpful. I would recommend the place completely!

Stayed here for 3 nights, loved it. We had an ocean view room. We didnt eat here, so cant give you a review of their breakfast buffet. There is a great restaurant across the street that many of the guests who did not eat breakfast at the hotel goes to. Great food! Great price!

The only negative thing I have to say is that the rollaway bed was not in the room when we arrived and after waiting for 20 minutes (we were waiting to let them know where to place it), we left the hotel. When we came back, we had to move it to where we wanted it. Otherwise, everything was great. The room is a bit small so with the rollaway bed, there was very little walking space.

We made arrangements with the hotel to take us to the airport. $70MYR to the airport in their mini man. Less than what we paid when we took the taxi from the airport (Since there are 3 of us, when we arrived at the airport, the man at the taxi counter said we need to take 2 different taxis or a van and the cost for the van was the same cost as 2 taxis.)

Georgetown have a free hop on and hop off shuttle (CAT) with several stops around town. One of the stops is across the street from the hotel. Quite a few buses stop there including bus 204 to Penang Hill. It costs $2MYR each way and you get off at the last stop. Bring exact change. If you want to go somewhere else on your own, ask the front desk for assistance. They will tell you how much it would cost by taxi and/or what bus to take.
