“Okay hotel, but would not pay full price for it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Someone I know used to stay here once for one night and she came back with endless complaints, which makes me kind of reluctant of staying here.

However, I had a chance to stay here when I went for a trip to Penang in July 2013 recently, as my aunt is a member of the hotel chain and we would be getting discounted price for the hotel rooms.

Pros:
1. We have specifically requested for one bedroom with queen size bed and others with two single beds. Although we checked in late, about 10 pm at night, they still accommodate to this request although it was a busy weekend. Thumbs up.

2. The rooms are generally clean with all the essentials which should be provided by hotels of its class.

3. The staff come to help when I reported any issue immediately without delay although it was already late at night.

Cons:

1. The hotel is very worn down. The shower curtains have stubborn stains and they did not change to nice new ones.

2. As mentioned above, I encountered some problems with the room. We could not switch on the TV when we just checked in.

I would say it is an okay hotel, but unless it is refurbished I would not choose this hotel unless necessary.

Having read Reviewer's contention about his friend's many complaints, we wonder when exactly she had stayed at our hotel. It is possible that she stayed more than 3 years ago before we started our refurbishment.
Regarding Reviewer Riko312's comment about shower curtain stains & room a bit worn out, we hereby express our regrets for his discomfort. His comments have been forwarded to our Executive Housekeeper & Maintenance Manager to make the necessary improvements. Despite that, we are quite surprised to be rated 3 star on value in view of the fact that they got a very special rate for the room.

However we appreciate that Riko312 mentioned that they got the room type requested despite the busy period and that the staff service was commendable. We have always tried to instil this service attitude in our staff. We hope that this will be enough to draw Riko312 back to our hotel while we make improvements gradually.

This is a large clean facility, located on a main bus line into town & in walking distance of 2 beautiful Buddhist temples. You can easily negotiate a good price a private cab for the day (go to the cab stand on the street out front---NOT the one on the hotel entry, much more $$) for forays out of town to feringe beach, spice gardens, etc. Take the local bus from in front of the hotel to downtown then use the FREE HOHO (hop on/hop off) bus around the historic district.

There is a small shopping area next door & the in-house restaurant provides a fine breakfast & dinner buffet. Rooms & baths are fine---I spent little time there except sleeping.

We stayed here for a couple of days. Its location is very convenient, though the hotel is somewhat average but the friendly front desk staff makes up for it :-) - there is a bus stop that's right in front of the hotel. There are quite a few good eateries nearby as well. The staff at the front desk was really helpful. Locationwise excellent hotel!

My daughter and I stayed here and we where greatly appreciative of the how clean the rooms where. Our breakfast where most enjoyable with a wide variety of dishes to select from. The staff at the reception desk where very polite and most helpful in making sure our needs were taken care of. The location was handy to the Adventist hospital, malls to shop at, places to have a good massage at . I would highly recommend this hotel to others and should I return to Malaysia I'd be happy to stay there again

I stayed here for 3 nights. I could enjoy my stay here because the room is quite big ( I got the standard double room), and overall it was a nice room. The bathroom also nice and clean. The breakfast is good, there were some local and western food there. The staff were also very nice. The hotel is very close to Penang Adventist Hospital, it is right in the opposite of the hotel. It's also a walking distance to Gurney Plaza (A shopping mall). You can also walk to get some street food with cheap price around ($ 1 - $2). But for the local attraction it is quite far. You need to take taxi to get there. By the way, I got discount for this room because one of my family went to the Penang Adventist Hospital, so you can ask for a hotel discount at the hospital and give it to the hotel. So it is quite worth it stayed here.

Room Tip: Choose the twin room because it is bigger. :P

Thank you to Reviewer Monjunee for the simple and nice review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay - nice room, good breakfast, nice staff, accessible location to Hospital and Gurney Plaza.
We were just slightly disappointed that you gave us an overall score of only 3-stars while ranking us average 4-stars on most of the criteria stated. Nevertheless, we hope to have you back again with us in future all the way from Bogor, Indonesia.

I had the opportunity as a Hotelier to stay in Georgetown City hotel for 6 days to trained some trainers from Penang and took this opportunity to stay in the hotels used the hotel meeting room facilities and F&B outlets. The whole service starts from pick up from Airport arrival at hotel,Receptions, Rooms, Service by Banquet I find that most of the staff was friendly, helpful. The rooms I stayed in 2608 was a nice room an comfortable. Housekeeping was excellent. The Food and Beverage food and beverage service staff was helpful and the food choice especially their cakes are just nice and not too sweet. Not bad for just refurbished hotel rooms and they are practicing a Green hotel ambience.

Room Tip: 26th Floor Non smoking Floor. Room 2608 facing the sea and also some condos Penthouse with garden.

My husband and I were there for the Raya Puasa break (08-11 Aug 2013). I chose this location due to its proximity to the Gurney Drive eating joint. It was a good 10 mins walk for us for the 2 nites we were there.

The room was moderate. We were ok with it. I must compliment the front counter staff, in particular, a young and courteous Filipino named Albert. He made our stay very pleasant with his cute accent and ever-ready assistance. He was always the only staff there smiling whenever we walked into the lobby area from a long day of exploring the city of Penang. He even took the trouble to learn our names and greeted us using our names everytime. All other staff lacked that interpersonal skills that he had. Well done, Albert!

Other dissatisfactions we had with Georgetown City Hotel were the little napkin-sized towelette and the use of wifi in the room. We were told that wifi is charged @ RM5 per 2 hours, which is terrible considering wifi is available for free in most parts of Penang!! Even budget hotels offer the free use of wifi!!!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the higher floors - they are more quiet.

We thank Christle012 for her review thus giving us feedback on our hotel and certain shortcomings. We are pleased that our Filipino trainee Albert actually impressed Reviewer with his friendliness and interpersonal skills - something we would have to remind our other staff to constantly keep in mind. As the Reviewer stayed at our hotel over the peak Hari Raya period, it is possible that the other staff were more busy and perhaps a little tired, thus resulting in their being less cheerful than their normal selves.

Regarding the mini towels mentioned by Christle012, we believe those are face towels which should be standard size in all hotels. As for the wifi, we would like to clarify that to wifi-enable a whole hotel is very much different from doing it in a cafe like Starbucks etc. The logistics due to the size and structure of a hotel building makes the investments very much higher.

In any case, we are pleased that Reviewer had a pleasant stay and we look forward to having her back in future.
