“Hotel has seen better days”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

This hotel was formerly known as Berjaya Penang Hotel. The hotel takes up one of the two tower buildings joined by a podium block. There is a shopping center in the podium block which is quite dead with only a few shops operating and the other building looks unoccupied. We could also see a water park which has been closed down. We drove everywhere so the location was not fantastic but not too bad with a car as free parking is provided.

THE ROOM
-Adequate lighting with 2 side lamps, 1
standing lamp, 1 table lamp, 1 entrance light, 1 bar light, 1 bathroom light and 2 bathroom mirror lights.
-King sized bed
-Side table with 2 chairs
-21" box type (old) TV
- Kettle & Coffee & Tea & 2 mugs
-Complimentary water 500ml x 2 per day
-Minibar fridge (empty but can be filled with snacks upon request)
-Central type air cond
-In room safe
-No toothbrush, toothpaste, comb or shaver
- No bedroom slippers

TOILET
- Bathtub
-Shower type mixer (hot & Cold) no hand held shower
- 3-in-1 type shampoo-conditioner-soap (bottled shampoo & conditioner available upon request)
-2 towels (no face towels)
-1 floor rag

PARKING
- Free to collect parking card at car park entrance and bring to lobby to validate.

INTERNET
- RM5 per hour
- RM25 per day

CLEANLINESS
- Carperted room with floor stains as expected
- Bed was comfortable enough
- Stayed for 3 nights but sheets and pillow cases not changed had the same stain
- Room was dated with bath tub having black spots
- Cleaners did a good job but i guess the maintenance was poor.

This hotel has seen better days.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor

We would like to thank MalaysianAged28 (MA28) for his very detailed review of our hotel facilities & amenities. We believe it does give other guests an idea of what to expect and what is available. We would however like to clarify or expand upon several points stated :
1) the shopping block is not the typical mall but most of the individual shops are taken up, some of which are offices. The ground floor is a bustling area of activity daily but many of the outlet closes early (8.30pm) so it is possible MA28 may have seen it around that time.
2) our hotel has a Loving Earth program thus items like toothbrush, slippers, comb, mini amenity bottles, hand towels are not placed in-room. However they are available free upon request. We also encourage guests to re-use towels & bed linen - by placing the relevant cards as required.

Again we thank Reviewer for staying with us and we hope the above will serve to clarify most of the points mentioned.

I have no doubt that in its day when the water park next door was operating and the mall next door was full of shops that this hotel would have deserved its four star rating.

Our experience was to arrive at 1pm and be told rudely that check in was 3pm. We then asked another staff member about free WiFi and she checked us in straight away. When we queried that she said the other lady was a trainee.

Up to our room and we have a shower, however the bath plug doesn't drain water as the surface of the bath was peeling off so you end up knee deep in water.

Had a sleep and the bed was very comfortable. When we're got up the roof started dripping water on us from the air con. The roof was clearly water damaged so I am guessing this has happened before. After a maintenance man checked the room we were moved to a new room.

Go to the bar for the free drink but no staff turned up so gave up on that.

In the morning we had the bellboy knock on our door at half 9 telling us we had to check out - although the cashier assured us check out was noon.

Pool was nice, but location further from Georgetown than the name implies.

We truly regret all the inconveniences Clubjed went through during their stay with us. We hope Reviewer also understand the fact that some of the issues were due to some sort of miscommunication with trainees and foreign staff (eg. at check in time and about being asked to check out early). We also hope that Reviewer can see that most of the shortcomings were quickly attended to.

In any case, we thank Clubjed for staying with us and for his feedback, without which we would not have been able to look into improving the hotel for his future visits and for our other guests.
We look forward to have him back again so that he can see the improvements we intend to make.

This is my second visit to Berjaya Georgetown and they rename it to Georgetown City Hotel.

Here is my review on Georgetown City Hotel: -
Hotel Environment: There isn’t a grand entrance as you need to climb a high staircase to the reception. There are a dark car park with entry directly to the hotel room’s floor which I raise the concern. The other comment is the hotel is near Gurney plaza and gurney drive and it is far from the city center. There is some food hawker from walking distance which comforts us especially for family with baby.

Hotel Service & Staff: I found that the service is really bad. I reached the entrance with my car and family in front but there aren’t any hotel staffs that are assisting me for luggage. I have to park my car and carry all by myself with a baby as well.

Room Comfort: The room is average and I am fine with the room with connecting room with my parents.

First of all, we thank JoeyCW for staying with us for the 2nd time and also for pointing out several good features of our hotel - location near to Gurney Drive and food places nearby. Also that Reviewer is satisfied with his room.

As for the lift from carpark to rooms, we understand his concern but it is always a balance between guest needs and safety measures. Many other guests, especially the senior citizens appreciated the fact that they are able to get their luggages direct from room to their car without having to transfer lift & luggages in the lobby. In fact, a number of them have suggested that all lifts should be so instead of only 1 out of 3 lifts. However to address Reviewer's concerns, we would like to inform that we have cctv system in the lifts as well as room corridors. The room electronic locks are also able to provide information of whose key was used to enter each room at any time.

Lastly, we sincerely regret the fact that there were no bellman to assist JoeyCW with his luggage at the front. We hope Reviewer appreciates that the hotel was busy and our bellmen must have been engaged with many other guests arrival. We will make more efforts to improve based on Reviewer's feedback.

Booked for 2 nights.

Good:
- gave complimentary breakie though i was not entitled to
- gave free wifi though its supposed to be chargeable
- pool was not as murky as some described
- view of penang was very good!

Bad:
- junior suite was extremely small
- First night we slept with the spoilt aircon, literally meant no aircon but it was very late and my 4 year old was dozing off. Their solution was to send a technician up to repair it, at 11pm?

Good again:
They changed another room for me the next day, this time fully functional so no more complaints.

Room Tip: High floors, at least 15 and above, extremely good views of the island.

Thank you for your service which truly reflects the welcoming spirit of Malaysia. The food is amazing and the management went the extra mile to make us feel at home. The chef truly was outstanding, and we enjoyed our meals there. The service was top notch and I believe that this hotel really offers service that surpass the reasonable price. It's very near Gurney Plaza and very accessible. I would recommend that the hotel place a clearer signage to make it more outstanding as well as to maintain the elevators. Overall, good job Georgetown City Hotel! Thank you for great customer service!
