“Jakuzzi was awesome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2010

Stayed in this hotel for 3 days 2 nights. We had the Junior Suite at a reasonable price where we have our very own jakuzzi in our private bathroom. The room was spacious enough for the both of us facing the sea. There's also spa center at the hotel but we had no enough time to go. The hotel is located at Jalan Gurney whereby it is walking distance to the food courts. The second day we went to Hard Rock Hotel Penang at Batu Feringgi to hang out at Hard Rock Penang. If you go during the day, it's a non smooking club where we decide to leave.

Having stayed here many times since 2002, I find that this hotel requires some refurbishment. Everything in the room feels a bit dated and old. However, having said that, this is a rather good hotel to stay if one is looking for a cosy as well as value for money accomodation. It's staff are friendly as usual and most requests were entertained.

Just one final comment of which the hotel may not have control over, having stayed in a non-smoking floor, I find that some inconsiderate guests are smoking in the lift area. Perhaps the hotel could install some form of device to deter guests from smoking outside the room.

A very nice property located in the heart of Penang with close proximity to the landmarks in Penang with shopping malls and eateries located close by.

This is our first time staying at the hotel and we found it extremely enjoyable. We were a bit worried that it would not have any facilities for our young daughter to play but that passed when we found out that they have a covered swimming pool on the 7th Floor. Mind you, it can get a bit more crowded in the afternoon. Best to go in the morning after breakfast. We didn't have any problems checking into our room, the staff were very pleasant and courteous to us throughout and some of them have been known to go the extra mile to give what we have missed out i.e. my husband loves his Roti Canai and when he found out that there was none to be had, one of the staff "can't remember his name" went to the kitchen and got him some slices and made my husband happy.

One thing that worries me is that the elevator doesn't seem to be working on full capacity especially when we stayed over the school holidays. We were booked into a room on the 29th Floor that gave us a fantastic view of the esplanade. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was huge. Loved the shower... and check out The Gurney Spa (hotel's own). I went for the Balinese massage and enjoyed it tremendously.

Would definitely go back there again.

We stay in the Penang/Gurney area frequently - usually at the Northam (Gurney affiliated hotel I believe). The Gurney Hotel is quite run down by comparison. While the staff is friendly and helpful, it appears that the hotel is struggling financially and minimally maintained.

Red flags from the moment we left the lobby. Elevator A/C not on or not working. Hallways on the various floors - no A/C as well. 'El Cheapo' wall mounted A/C units (only one worked in our room) in the rooms appear to once have replaced the central A/C . Shower hose needed replacing (water squirting everywhere from the hose fittings), shower water temp was possessed by the Devil (scalding to cold and back to scalding without warning), toilet didn't flush properly without coaxing, Lot's of banging and hammering. Numerous light fixtures inop.

I don't understand why the maid staff doesn't make it a practice to test the various features of the room(s) when they clean and report to maintenance what is not working. Instead the guest has to complain about broken items and wait for a stranger to enter the room for repairs.

Overall the hotel is sub-standard.

I was travelling on business to Penang. The company booked my accomodation at The Gurney. From the outlook of the hotel, it was just like any other hotels in Penang town but with hints of its edge showing. The lobby was well kept, simple and welcoming. They gave me a room on the 28th floor which offered a great view of the ocean.

The room comes equipped with the standard ameneties including a safe deposit box, work desk, sofa area, dining table, two air conditioning units and a jacuzzi. 30 minutes after checking in, the reception would call to check if everything is fine. That is what I call service!

The hotel houses a swimming pool, coffee house, karaoke & convenience mart. Stepping out from the lobby, you'll notice a disco and coffee bean just round the corner of the building. Best of all, the hotel is just minutes away from Upper Penang Road which is one of the hot spots for night life.

Check In
No issues as already prompted the hotel 3 weeks back for a non-roach room. Got the 2 B/Room with the view of Gurney Drive and the sea. If you have luggage. Please drop it at the lobby. There is no lifts from the parking to the lobby.

Rooms

Should have a microwave oven and there already have a pantry present.

2nd room a bit small

Master Room is worth every cent though. Great View, Jacuzzi with a view.

Pool

The best of the facilities. However sand will be present in the pool due to the beach concept. The infinity pool is great as well.
The slides were wonderful according to my daughter.

Breakfast

When in Penang, do not eat hotel breakfast. But since it was included in the rate. Just took a quick one and went out from brunch in Pulau Tikus later!

Location

G Hotel would be better and newer but the hotel wasn;t my choice. If you have a car, the location is great. Park your car at G Hotel and walk to the Gurney Shopping Centre or to Gurney Drive for food ( expensive and too commercialized ). Please try the fruit rojak - the best.

Check Out- No issues
