“Tired but okay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

This is not the first time we stayed in the Gurney Resort Hotel. In general we like the location - which is right on Gurney Drive with Gurney Plaza up the road and food places nearby. The foodie haunts of Jalan Selamat, Jalan Burma, Jalan Macalister etc are also within an easy 10-min drive.

We usually take the two-bedroom suite because we need the space for our family. Overall, the same factors that made us choose the Gurney are still there - location and size of the two-bedroom apartment.

However, the place IS getting old and tired and is really showing its age. The management really should do something about this. The drapes are stained and dusty, the carpet is matted, the pillows and mattresses no longer as firm as they used to be. And the television sets belong in the last century - certainly I no longer see 21-inch CRT sets in most hotels anymore. To its credit, the room did have very good wifi connections so the Gurney does have one toe in the 21st century.

By simply changing the drapes, upgrading the bedding, getting flat-screen TVs in place - that would do wonders in updating the look and feel. At RM380 a night (and this was a corporate rate) it is not exactly cheap either. The hotel really should put some money and work into this if it wants to keep its guests coming back.

Gurney Hotel is an average hotel - there is nothing to praise except the rooms are very big with a couch as well as a bed -- the two bedroomed suites are a great size with a small kitchenette attached.

If you want a great hotel experience this is not the hotel for you but if you want acceptable quality for a reasonable price then it is. I stay here quite a lot and its always been in line with my expectations given the price.

The only thing to be aware of is most one bed suites have adjoining doors to the next room so the soundproofing is not great --- if you happen to get noisy neighbours be prepared to bang on the connecting doors and tell them to keep quiet as i had to do last night!

Room Tip: ask for a high floor for better views

A hotel in a need for a facelift as it appeared a little dull and dated as compared to G hotel also located around Gurney.
This hotel is a little further away from Gurney Hawker but still within a reasonable walking distance.
Taxi from Airport to this hotel will set you back at around RM 50 as it is a little off center as compared to hotels in Georgetown.
A great place to be if you like to live around Gurney Drive and a mere 5 mins drive away from Pulau Tikus where you can get nice hawker food.

I Love the room size as it is really spacious. I had a comfortable stay. The hotel features great room service and we ordered many of its local fare and were not disappointed by the quality, It wasn't expensive at all.

Their complimentary breakfast was pretty decent too.

I will probably not stay in Gurney the next time around as it wasn't as convenient as Georgetown location but I will recommend this place for families as the space as good for people with kids and huge baggages.

Loved the big rooms which are really important for young kids to run around.i had 2 adjoining rooms with a door to link them. Loved the jacuzzi in the bathroom.

Room Tip: Look for higher floors overlooking the sea

Big room that oversee the sea. A nice place to stay but not during public holiday or school holiday as it will be overcrowded with people.

Room Tip: Rooms at higher floor is quieter

The room is spacious and the location is good. Breakfast is widespread with local favourites. All is nice I would say except the maintenance which is normal as some of the bulbs in the room are not working and shower handle was loose.

Still a nice place to stay. The Ichiban Restaurant is recommended for a quiet dinner with reasonable price.

There are no excuses for a filthy, unhygienic hotel room but my room in The Gurney Hotel was disgustingly dusty. The curtains (with those holes in them) looked like they hadn’t been washed for 15 years, the carpet was sticky and dirty, and it was generally unclean. Makes you wonder what they are paying the cleaning and house keeping staff for doesn’t it?

My room is certainly big and spacious, but bigger does not mean better here. A grand hotel it is not. The decor was more of 90′s cheap chain hotel feel. It was a big room with a micro-mini TV. And a Mickey mouse ironing board. The beds had some of the most uncomfortable mattresses I have ever slept on. They were solidly hard and in dire need of replacing as you could be forgiven if you thought you were sleeping on the floor. The pillows were so soft it was non-existent. The dark and gloomy writing table and work area is more suited for the visually impaired.

I’m embarrassed to even admit that I stayed at The Gurney Hotel
