“Poor hotel service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW

This is package offered through Expedia flying by Tiger airways with 2 nights stay in the hotel.
Quite convenient location with free shuttle bus service to tourist sights. Many eating areas around and nearby shopping centre like Komptar. A large food court within walking distance that opens at night with karaoke sessions lasting up to 12 midnight. Can be noisy for those who plans to rest early. Very poor bell boy attitude when asked about guidance to tourist locations. Average room cleanliness. Not much varieties for the buffet breakfast.

Room Tip: Twin beds are chargeable

A 3-Star hotel conveniently located downtown. Paid RM 190 for a night. One of the two lifts not working as it is under renovation. Plenty of Penang hawker fare around. Chinese food and nasi kandar aplenty.

I stayed at Hotel Malaysia from the 7 - 9 th of Nov 2014 with 37 other students ( 15 -16 years old). I booked a twin sharing room which was newly renovated. It was clean , of course, and everything was new. It was great. Meanwhile , the students shared a quad room with two queen sized bed which were just perfect for four. It was cosy and everyone slept well. These quad rooms were not renovated yet but everything was in good condition, usable and clean, though they looked old. Breakfast vouchers were given to everyone. The breakfast buffet was light", nothing heavy. I enjoyed it. The best thing was, the noodles were not salty and tasted just right. The "teh tarik" was great too. Location wise, Hotel Malaysia is situated along Penang Road and you can get everything there, especially food. The famous "nasi kandar" - Line Clear-and "Cendol" is only 8 minutes walk away. Chowrasta market is just a 10 minutes brisk walk away - where you can buy pickled fruits and biscuits. There are bus stops outside the hotel where you can take a free bus ride which will take you along the Heritage Trail as well as the hop-on-hop-off double- decker bus with an open top. I would recommend Hotel Malaysia to everyone, especially after it is fully renovated. It's convenient, clean and the housekeepers are polite and kind. The front desk officers are helpful too, always ready to answer your queries. Beside and opposite the hotel are two convenience stores when you can get whatever you need.

Room Tip: The view from my room was excellent! it faces the sea view! ( 9th floor )

I recently stayed at the Hotel Malaysia to get to a meeting in Georgetown early the next morning (it would be just as well the meeting was early).

This hotel, without any doubt, has more than passed its best-before date and is now limping carelessly along. Entering the room, the curtains were drawn such that I had to fondle the wall to actually locate the card-holder - meanwhile, the air conditioning which had been merrily pumping away regardless meant the room temperature was nothing short of baltic (it is centrally based so the electricity in the room has no bearing on it).

Oddly, I would later come to learn the air con cannot be varied like most people would be familiar with - rather a strange keyring on the end of a metal chain by the vent serves the purpose of dulling the cold somewhat, once hung on the hook located on the side of the wall (see picture).

The bathroom meanwhile was suffering from an extensive mould collection that affected nearly all corners. Aside from that, it wouldn't have qualified as 'crystal clean' at any rate regardless and the toilet paper had an odd dampness I wished to know nothing about.

Topping it off was a hideous karaoke session across the back of the car park in the adjoining club that didn't finish until well in the night, meaning little to no sleep.

Room Tip: If the AC is too cold (which it will be), use the string hanging by the vent and connect it to the h...

The location is the main highlight if you are looking for a good night out, being just steps away from plenty of pubs and bistros. Also attached to the side of the hotel was a 24hr convenience shop. There is a food court just next to the hotel but I wouldn't recommend as the food was mediocre and obviously a tourist trap.

Although Malaysia Hotel is a very old hotel, it has recently been refurbished so the room had a somewhat modern feel to it & the bed was firm & comfortable. Lighting in the room was sufficient & the shower in the toilet was strong and consistent. Natural light in the room was also good thanks to the large windows.

Everything else from here on was downhill. There was a major renovation works carried out on several floors & we were not informed by the staff when we made the reservation. This led to day long intrusion of noise from the drilling & hacking. Also, only one elevator was in operation.

The front staff desk were unfriendly & unresponsive, dishing out the type of service you'd usually expect from a star-less motel. I don't recall ever seeing any of them smiling while attending to guests. Some upkeeping required for the common area & especially the dark & dingy staircase. Breakfast was rubbish. I wouldn't wake up for it if I had known earlier.

In a nutshell, location & room is good. Everything else needs to be improved.

Location of the Hotel Malaysia is excellent. I was on a family outing and I booked 4 rooms in Hotel Malaysia. The bath tub is too high. I mean, the leap in to / out of the bath tub is too high. I am 5’ 3’’. My 75 years old father who is about 5’ 4”, almost landed head first when he got out of the bath tub. This is a safety hazard. Beware! One of the rooms had a long trail of ants crawling on the wall. We had to request for a room change. A second room had hair on the bed sheets. We had to request for new sheets. The free wifi did not work for 2 nights (we were there for 2 nights) and we were given some excuses. I would have accepted a simple explanation of “network down”. Loud music and singing from the nearby pub can be heard from the hotel room, till 1am.
