“Excellent value for money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2010

I shared a non-smoking executive suite with 2 friends. We had access to the Traders Club (free desk top computers from early morning to late evening, and drinks and nibbles from 6-8 each evening, with quality wine and spirits) and included daily breakfast and newspaper for a great rate. We also had free internet access in our suite.

We loved it - very comfortable beds, quality linen and gorgeous feather pillows; L'Occitane toiletries; friendly staff etc.

We lunched twice in the hotel's Islander restaurant. On the first occasion, at 3 pm, we enjoyed chicken sate, wings and fried rice (24 MYR), chicken char kway teow and prawn and cuttlefish char kway teow (24 each).

On the second visit, we were offered the Islander smorgasbord at 27 MYR for seniors (45 for others). It was terrific value, and the place was packed with elder citizens!! The range of food was wide - soups, sushi, fresh duck and chicken chopped to order, curries galore, salads, sweets - mind boggling value for seniors, and offered every Monday-Friday.

We chose to have breakfast in the main room, rather than at the Club, for a wider choice. Wow! Asian soups, roti canai, eggs to order, anything really.

One evening we enjoyed listening to a classical pianist playing in the foyer until 10 pm (after dinner at Sri Ananda Bahwan; see separate review).

The location was terrific - next door to Komtar from where we could catch cheap, air-conditioned Rapid buses all over Penang, and the free a/c CAT bus around Georgetown.

Our request for a 3pm checkout wasn't a problem.

We all agreed that this Traders Hotel was great, and would happily stay again.

It's a shame the walls (especially on entry) can't be given a scrub, and the carpets throughout replaced. The worn greenish floor coverings are dull and nothing within appears polished, including the staff. Traders really has an unserviced ambience, from the front desk to the pool, and yet we found the cleaning staff to be the most aimiable of all. The rooms, although a blast from the past, are well kept. Even the club floor on which we stayed was pretty ordinary, so given the price difference maybe that's the place to start some form of modernisation. Better signage would also help. Maybe the front desk personnel are busy, but several were quite officious and uncaring. It''s really hit and miss. Take your chances if you want to stay in a central position near good malls, but still have reciprocal visiting access to the sister hotel (Golden Sands) a thirty minute complimentary bus trip to the coast. Even though the pool was moderately sized and clean, the food and breakasts were only passable, and we expected better from Traders. Georgetown, in some areas is also actually quite decrepit and grubby but trying to grow with new buildings and investment. So come on Traders, have a go, and replicate your KL success.

I have always stayed at Traders chain of hotels in Malaysia and Singapore. I have stayed here for twice, once in 2006 & in 2007. The best part of this hotel is the location, it is straight on the main road. By 5 min walk you can reach a small street side food stalls which serve authentic malaysian and chinese cuisine. Acorss teh back side of the hotel, aout 15 mon walk one can easily reach the Penang beach. I liked the service and food spread very much at Traders. Traders also gives a free lunch voucher if you stayed for more than 3 days I guess.

Having stayed at the Traders a while ago, I just felt I need to write a review on what a fantastic trip I had. It was a business trip. I decided to stay in traders because of its quality & service.

The hotel is very large and has a huge range of food from asia to continental.

The rooms are extremely spacious with all the mod-cons and great tv's, and views overlooking the sea shore are just stunning!

The staff could not be more helpful. Really they are so nice. They'll do anything you ask and made the trip that extra bit special with such great service.

The hotel has a pool in 3rd floor. The pool has underwater It is so nice when swimming... you just don't wan't to come up!

Really do stay at this hotel. Even if it's for a night. It's really really really great and I'll defiantly be going back on my next visit to Penang.

Visit the other fecility they have near sea shore, a free shuttle available!!
Also free shuttle is available evry day morning which touches many company. you can avail to get dropped to your office.

Just had a 1 night business trip so wasn't too picky not in the E&O mood so picked Traders. Like all downtown hotels, it's just 15-20mins away from the airport and upon entering the lobby, lower your expectations as it's a rather dated hotel. Check-in was clinical, though not that fast. The room was average, and made worse by the CRT tv, which will never garner a hotel even a 4 star tripadvisor rating from me these days. Didn't try the breakfast as it's Penang and one is much better off going to 1 of those food centres. There's a rowdy skanky nightclub just opposite the hotel so watch for noise and the like if you are overly sensitive. Internet connection was ok. I was driven around for much of the 2 days but still couldn't find any world heritage worthy sites...

My first comment. Watch out for this hotel. You'd expect it to be in good location based on all the other comments but what you get is some shady outdated hotel watching out some slum-like apartments with no restaurant and no service but with super high cost for this like place.

Heard me wrong. If you like to take a swim in a nice simming pool after nice walk down in the Georgetown (that is just a sham as everything else, we will never come back and one day for the whole city was enough - like in Bratislava, like in Tallinn, like in... you name it) forget it. The pool looks some slum area, there's no bar to get your Guinness and there's nothing.

Rooms are outdated. Service is super bad. You pay 50 RM for no drinks you never see as you expect. We did not order any food from the hotel (thank God) but we'd expect that Caesar's salad would lack the salad or the chicken anyway, although not the price. Just though remember. We did not order. That is just based on the experience we had.

Furniture. Outdated. As said. Lobby looks nice though. Smell is bad. Location - not that good. Good thing is the shuttle bus to the beach resorts but after staying here, we regred no to go there in the first place.

And the sound of the minaret will wake you up. If you are not fan of that, select hotel with decent sound proofing, or prepare to wake up at six o'clock on the morning.

Stayed in Traders Hotel during school holiday. Therefore, during checked out time it was quite a long wait and it took me around 15 minutes to check out.

Strategic location where you can easily find local food stalls near the hotel. Turn right and all the way straight from the hotel, you will see a local food stall called Yi Garden Coffee Shop (opposite Guang Ming Office, at Lorong Selamat, from 12pm-10.30pm). For Malaysian, if you like Wan Tan Mee, then this is the best place you can go. The Wan Ten Mee comes with huge & meaty Wan Tan, with lots of "chu yao cha" (piggy oil cube). Only cost you RM3.50 & It's super delicious. Also, near Jalan Dato Kramat, there is a famous Coconut Jelly Store which sells only fresh Coconut Jelly without preservative.

Room wise, i must say the room is superb clean! Although the hotel is a bit old, everything in the room is well maintained. I especially like the hotel's amenities. The hotel provides not only sufficient but luxury amenities which impressed me a lot. Besides, extra pillow & blanket are also provided in the wardrobe. The only part which disgust me is the hotel view, my room facing right at the old and dirty building, not much scenery you can find. It's better to close the curtain than looking outside, it's yukky. Also, the live band in the lobby. I think they still need to go for more trainings. Not so impressive.

Shutter bus is provided FOC to thier sister hotel, Golden Sand at Batu Ferringhi. Although guests from Trades Hotel can utilise the swimming facilities, but I would strongly suggest you not to take the trouble as there is no shower room for you to take a shower, even in the toilet there is no pipe or a private area for you to wash yourself. The only place you can wash is at the toilet basin (bear in mind, anyone can just walk in) or the outdoor pool shower (which sometimes you need to queue for your turn).

Another eatery place i want to recommend, if you have more budget, Ferringhi Garden will be a good place to explore. They serves western & fine dining. Just next to Parkroyal Hotel. Although the price is a bit pricey. It is still cheaper if compared to KL.
