“Nice comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

Stayed here over a weekend attending a conference. Found the hotel to be a nice, comfortable hotel, and the staff pleasant and friendly. Booked a club room so could check in at the lounge. The bell man and porter who greeted me were very friendly as was the receptionist at the lounge. Had a room facing the sea which was nice. The window though was dirty from the outside with what looked like fungus and could have done with some cleaning. Otherwise the room was very clean and the furniture all in good condition. There was a welcome fruit basket and complimentary water which was nice.

Had breakfast at the restaurant. Good variety of Asian and International food. Very crowded on one day and had to wait for a table.

Took the shuttle to the Rasa Sayang and Golden Sands resorts one day. Very convenient to spend an afternoon by the beach. The beach at the Golden Sands is a bit noisy with a lot of water sports. Not very safe to swim of play in the sea as there were speed boats and jet skis going up and down at full speed. Shame really. Noticed all the guests at the Rasa Sayang were resting inside in the garden area, probably because of the noise at the beach from the motorised vessels. Not a good place to relax. Had a nice snack of ice kacang instead by the pool at the Golden Sands.

Overall, a pleasant enjoyable stay.

We stayed two nights in September 2013 at the Traders Hotel in Penang. The hotel is part of the Shangri-la group and used to be called the Shangri-la Inn. It’s not a brand new property but from what we could tell it is still in a very well-maintained condition. It has a spacious, agreeable classical hotel lobby with plenty of natural light and room to lounge and sit. The breakfast area is on the same floor (ground floor) as the lobby and looks out over the adjacent street. Check-in was courteous and swift. For those who reserve a Traders Club arrangement (rooms on the Club floors (=higher floors)) check-in is separate at the floor with the Traders Club lounge. We booked a Traders Club arrangement which comes with breakfast buffet and free canapés and cocktails/drinks between 6 pm and 8 pm every day. The lounge located on the 27th floor offers a nice view over Penang in all its glory. The building site of a future rival hotel looms right across the street with a new glitzy hotel under construction (the Saint Regis). The building site however did not result in any noise discomfort in our room. The Traders Hotel is located right beside the KOMTAR center (city administrative center). As the old town – Georgetown – on Penang Island is not very large, everything is within easy walking distance from the Traders Hotel making it a convenient base for exploring the town. The rooms are not extremely large but comfortable, clean and everything was in good working order. The bedding was good and the mattresses gave good support. The room came with all the standard amenities and attributes that can be expected in 4-star hotels. The views from our room were out over the newer part of town away from the old town. The height gave a feeling of space in the room. The staff is mostly Chinese Malay and very friendly, discrete and courteous. The canapés served in the evenings in the Traders Club Lounge are of excellent quality and in fact went a long way in feeding you. Wine was also available (free bar) for those who wanted and so were other alcoholic beverages along with non-alcoholic options. In general service levels in the hotel were pleasantly high and all staff members were very guest-oriented. The breakfast buffet was the best on our two week trip. The range of food options on offer left absolutely nothing to be desired. Guests were treated to fresh tea tarek at the breakfast table – a veritably wonderful surprise! You may furthermore want to know that virtually all the city’s shopping malls are located right beside the hotel and that the main bus station is situated right under the hotel. When you add all these elements, the Traders Hotel in Penang ends up being probably the best all-round choice for your stay, rivaled perhaps only by the more historical Eastern and Oriental Hotel although the latter is not as conveniently located (but it does offer sea views and more refinement).

All in all the Traders Hotel is a good quality place to stay where staff understand the concepts of hospitality. Furthermore the hotel is conveniently located and it is temptingly priced.

Room Tip: Rooms either look out over the old town or the new parts. If you can try to get one with views over...

Traders Hotel Penang is not as new and shiny as Trader Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, but it is still an excellent hotel in it's own right.
We stayed here for 2 nights while exploring Georgetown and it's in a good location - we walked from the hotel to Little India and on to Fort Cornwallis and then back again.
The hotel restaurant has very nice food if a little over priced for the area (but you are in an expensive hotel).
There is a large shopping mall next door that will take care of everything you wish to buy, as well as coffee shops for breakfast.
They had a band in the lobby bar the second night we were there that were quite good, and tasty cocktails were also available at a reasonable price.
The room didn't have a balcony on the 7th floor and the windows were thick enough that we didn't hear any traffic noise.
Definitely recommended and we would stay there again if we went back to Georgetown.

The overall stay experience was excellent. Just the room set up was too old and I can't believe I am staying at Traders in the first place when i moved in to my room. They should remove the Color TV and replace with at least LCD screen TV. They should really upgrade and renovate the hotel.

The good:
1. Service is great
2. Rooms was extra clean
3. Amenities are especially good
4. Sleep quality is excellent.
5. check-in was fast and efficient
6. check-out was fast and efficient
7. Excellent good value for money.

The downside
1. Internet bandwidth was a disaster, impossible to work.
2. Rooms are on the small size.
3. Desk chair is not office type, very uncomfortable for work.
4. Bathroom infrastructure is old and not functioning too well. (I didn’t succeed to empty the bathtub, since knob was failing).
5. Executive lounge is small, crowded, and understaffed

If budget is not a concern, this hotel is a great choice. Perfect location, great service, but limited tv channel. The comfortable bed is something that will stay in your memory for at least few weeks.

We stayed in this hotel whilst on holiday in Penang.

All staff are very friendly and will help with things like restaurant reservations. It's a bit of a walk to the main sites, but there are taxis outside the hotel.

We paid a bit extra to have one of the traders rooms. This gives access to soft drinks all day and snacks and alcohol in the evening.

There was a decent selection of food at breakfast.

My only complaint was that the hotel and rooms are a bit dated and could do with being refurbished. Especially the bathrooms. If this was carried out the hotel would be brilliant.
